If a Bond movie deserved an Oscar for best film it would be...?

Is it possible to be objective? Throw out all your personal prefrences & vote for a 'best' film? One with the best screenplay, best direction, editing, music...etc?

Let's see.

I nominate the following Bonds for your consideration:

Doctor No
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger
Thunderball
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The Living Daylights
Licence To Kill
Goldeneye
Tomorrow Never Dies
The World Is Not Enough
Casino Royale

Okay, being 'objective' here (or trying to be), I find I must vote for Doctor No (far from my own favourite Bond movie) for its many excellent aspects, originality, photography, and inital definition of the entire franchise.

Thoughts? Rebukes? Votes? Other nominations?

Has it? I'm asking you to step outside yourself and be as objective as possible. My favourites are TLD, LTK & TND, but I won't vote for them because I personally believe that each one has small imperfections that make them not Oscar-worthy...
  • Oscar worthy is a stupid phrase I think, because tons of great films haven't even got a nomination but things like Titanic have. Anyway...

LTK and an Oscar? I like it, but come on now.
  • Why would FRWL be Oscar worthy but not LTK?

Yeah, ever since Annie Hall won over Star Wars I realized it's more politics than quality, but I'm talkin' what SHOULD be here...

But this isn't 'Best Picture'..... [-X

Why would FRWL be Oscar worthy but not LTK?

FRWL is a brilliant cold war tale set in the thick of the actual era. It doesn't rely on much action to be spectacular and is overall a better spectacle. Just me being biased, really.
  • If we are serious about this from a general public standpoint then From Russia With Love, possibly Goldfinger, even On Her Majestys Secret Service, very possibly Goldeneye and Casino Royale, but between all those only Russia really holds it's head above water for being a truly classic oscar-worthy Bond release, the others aren't quite that, but are the closest ones to it, would be the general consensus, and even then, one or two of those titles I can't even abide. And as stated, if over sentimental crap like Titanic can grab a whole load of awards and accolades, and other, or indeed more worthy, movies miss out, then we can't read too much into it, but there you are

@LivingRoyale Russia is the epitome of what a Bond movie should be, it's an outstanding superlative release and no-one ever came closer to Connery in 1963 for what James Bond should represent. Not my favorite Bond, not my favorite Bond film, but if you look for something more than what a true Fleming-esque Bond and movie should be, you won't find one much better

License to Kill is a good gritty film, great Bond in Dalton, but the movie doesn't quite accompany it. It's too restricted for locations, and sometimes feels as far detached from James Bond as you can get. Dalton goes rogue agent and flits around Florida and Mexico against someone who orchestrated an attack on a best friend, and that's about it, it simply lacks the intrigue of the second release of the series, and once again, sometimes it's easy to forget you're watching an actual Bond release

TB and OHMSS. Though bond has won two Oscars previously GF for best sound effects and TB for special visual effects.

A fine nomination IMO, it's just that the pace is a little slow compared to DN.

That's a very valid opinion- one that Sir Sean probably agrees with!
    B-)
  • Maybe not, if you'd asked him in 1967, but I feel it is the only release of the entire series you could feasibly award an Oscar to, but I'm not suggesting it's a favorite release of mine or anything

But for pure Fleming/Bond greatness and overall impression, you won't find one better

People are just going to 'nominate' their favorite films.

I think FRWL and Casino Royale are the only two that would make sense, considering the talent involved, their result, and their impact.

    Skyfall
    (i mean, come'on - it's Deakins lol)

    Best Original Score
    On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    Diamonds Are Forever
    Moonraker
    For Your Eyes Only
    Casino Royale

    Best Original Song
    Goldfinger
    Diamonds Are Forever

    Why? I haven't!

In 1962 that silly David Lean film "Lawrence Of Arabia" won best picture... To Kill A Mockingbird or Dr. No would have been better choices IMO!
  • I think the thread relates to stand alone Bond releases, not necessarily putting them up against, or making a judgment with other movie releases of the same time period ?

But, to the above, Lawrence of Arabia would deserve an Oscar more than Dr No if we're being truthful. Most hardened Bond enthusiasts would agree

That's all good but it still doesn't make it any more Oscar worthy than LTK.

If there was an Oscar for best stunt Moore would win it for getting into bed with Grace Jones. He could've been seriously hurt.

Casino Royale hands down. CR was the best bond film made so far in my opinion.

    TOP 3 OSCAR WORTHY IMO-
    1. CASINO ROYALE (2006)
    2. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
    3. DR.NO

    CR

Oh, CR isn't the best, although certainly one of them, and pretty high up as well, but it had its flaws. Still, good list!

To be honest i do not believe Bond NEEDS Oscar recognition due to how popular and successful the franchise is? If it is bestowed on it? Thats a nice bonus!

@thelivingroyale: Hahahahaha, that was a good one! You're right, might have turned out badly for Roger!

In all seriousness though, I really would nominate A View to a Kill. To me, it's got one of the finest soundtracks, one of the greatest performances of a main villain ever, a terrific, A+ performance from Roger as 007, and a really intriguing plot, recycled or not!
