The SAS currently use the Sig Sauer P226 / P228 and the Glock 17 / 19. If Bond is now supposed to be former SAS, then then I would suggest either of those.
I don't see how it could be awkward, when both the Sigs and Glocks are newer designs than the mid-30's created PPK. Unless Bond goes back to using the P99.
If I think about it, if Bond gets a new sidearm, it should be something with an exotic and maybe slightly difficult to pronounce name.
@Murdock, when did Bond use the Walther P5? I can´t remember seeing it in any film. Would of course be a good excuse as any to watch all the films again.
Well they're more modern, right? Wouldn't it make more sense for Bond to use something more modern, especially if this Bond is former SAS. Why would MI6 still issue it's agents with a gun designed before WW2? If im not mistaken, thought I might be, the PP on which the PPK is developed from, is from the late 20's!
I am not too concerned about the name, as I am about it's suitability.
The Walther PP, which IINM is basically the same as the PPK only slightly bigger, was built from 1929 on. It would make sense for Bond IMO because of its iconographic value after all those years. And it makes sense that James Bond wears a small gun. I can´t immediately think of a 9mm x 19 caliber gun that would fit inside a business suit as snug as a PPK.
Aside from iconography I would find a fancy explanation most compelling, just like the PPK itself was introduced with "a delivery like a brick through plate glass" or something like that. Not realistically a reasonable thing to say probably about such a small caliber, but it sounded impressive.
Now days, there's no shortage of 9mm pistols that are comparable (and even superior) to the PPK. For example, here a few:
When it comes to aesthetics and iconic status, the PPK is very difficult to beat. However, when it comes to practicality, its easy to beat.
That’s what I want too. Maybe it’s just the gun enthusiast in me, but I’d love to hear Bond talking tools of the trade with Q.

Don't expect James Bond till his next face comes to use this gun still using the classic Walther PPK. Think reality. How Law enforcement in the world use Walther guns. I glad Van Der Valk reboot they use Walther pistol except PPK.

I leave you to judge should our law elite forces should switch to Walther handguns. I would love to use a Walther gun either P99,PPQ or this new PDP 9mm
a few pistols I'd love to see Bond use would be the previously mentioned
Walther P5.
H&K VP70
IWI Jericho.
Or a Glock, they produce a compact sidearm.
waltherarms.com/pd380 What do think of this new Walther hand gun & is good for new James Bond 007
This or the P99 are fine for assault mode.
But should not absolutely replace the PPK or PPK/S, a more beautiful firearm and Bond's signature handgun. Simply better in a casino or other refined surroundings.
In my dream Bond film, he would use an LP53 for just one scene, a bit like how Roger packed the nickel-plated revolver when he returned to San Monique. It was unusual, but it turned out to be an iconic look. We've seen Connery holding an LP53 in the FRWL photoshoots and I think Roger is holding one in the illustrations of his early promos - on the poster, toy packaging etc.
I think it would be fun and a nice nod to those moments to see him pull the LP53 out or even take it from a henchman.
Still it would be nice in publicity shots like you said.
It's always useful for shooting rats. Bond could've done with having one in FRWL, which was ironically what that iconic Bond photo with the Walther LP53 was taken for.
"It reads better than it lives." That line from the end of DAF comes to mind, but I suppose that applies to much of Bond's fantasy world.
