OHMSS is the movie that needs credit for giving the women a more important role. It proved that they don't need to be Bond's equal in career, but they can still show brains with beauty. Diana Rigg definitely brought that to the table, especially for 1969.

Couldn't have said it better. In my opinion, Honor Blackman started it all, but it wasn't as significative as Diana's character. Anya just made the woman's role even more remarkable but she was already in the late 70s... Still, it was really well written and she was such a strong character (even though Barbara's acting was so poor).

Yes, I mentioned Tracy - the first truly strong and vibrant Bond girl/woman who was a well rounded character. For Anya, I liked her and thought Barbara was just fine.

Now if we wanted to talk about female villains who are strong, that's a different point ...

Two great points that you beat me to. There's strong, but then there's strong and well-rounded which is even better. I think that's why so many people were taken with Tracy.

It's interesting to see the evolution from Pussy Galore to Fiona Volpe. Both strong characters, both working for the villain, but with Volpe there's the sense that now we don't need the beautiful female character to be seduced back to the side of right - she can just be left as bad.

I am wondering if Fleming viewed his mother as a "Rosa Klebb" given all of the mother references to her in FRWL.

Well he did call her "M", we do know that! And Eve Fleming was something of an old dragon in later life.
