Interesting to see FYEO here. I thought it was liked by the majority of fans. It has a tight, realistic Cold War story, barely any OTT moments or campness. One of Roger's best, it's kind of his FRWL. In fact, for his tenure, I rate it a 1st place tie with TSWLM.

It is usually liked well on here, but there are a good majority of fans who don't give it the time of day simply because they don't enjoy Moore's era or because they find FYEO sort of dull, which admittedly, I can see, but I don't think so!

MR, YOLT, TMWTGG, and OP catch a lot of flack but I love all 4 of them. All of them benefit from John Barry's scoring and some fantastic locations.

I definitely agree with you on the latter two! The only thing is that OP doesn't feature a great soundtrack from John Barry, in my opinion. I think it's a little unmemorable and kind of lame for Barry's usual great standards.

FYEO is one of the movies I think is good but I personally don't like that much (the opposite of GF, which I don't think is good but I really like).
  • TMWTGG and Quantum of Solace. I didn't like them too but after another watching, all is forgiven.

I was really surprised to see so many who think that Skyfail is better than Quantum of Solace. QoS is easily on my top 10 list and Moonraker is also a good Bond movie (after all Jaws is in it...)

LALD. It was the first one I saw, so I have a soft spot for it.

I can also see how QoS' reputation (even though it's a huge step down from CR) might grow over time. It takes risks and isn't showy about them.
  • I have both TWINE and LALD in my top half. Other than that, none. I do not think DAF or MR are horrific, so that is something, I guess.

Put me down in the GF is overrated camp, but still in the top half. The ones that I struggle to like that many people do are YOLT and LTK.
  • Moonraker above all else

Then The World Is Not Enough, The Man with the Golden Gun and well that's about it really. Some don't like Octopussy even, but if you take away the childish nonsense humor out of it, it's a decent and fun release, even if I have strongly berated it at previous times, but that's just because things got a bit out of hand sometimes, but still a good entry now that I think about it

I wouldn't say 'love' but the two that just aren't as bad as people say are Moonaker and AVTAK.

View is more of a personal thing. First Bond film I saw and on repeated viewing it's actually quite weird which I like (something LALD has going for it too.) but i really like the first half of AVTAK, pretty much until Tanya Roberts gets properly involved (she is horrid.) but the Paris segment is excellent, the cat and mouse games at Zorin's estate. The death of Macnee. Like them all. Then the ending is great with Walken mowing down the plebs with machine guns while laughing as they drown in a flood. I mean, wow! That's a first! Really it's just that Moore's too old, the firetruck chase too silly and Roberts too damn screaming!

Moonraker - always cops it. I always hated it and then I rewatched it recently and was struck by how much it didn't suck. In fact, it has some brilliant sequences. The death by hounds is one of my favorite Bond sequences, Drax is great, the glass factory fight is very good. Moore is actually in good shape (probably the last time he was!) and his performance matches it. The way he shrugs off Holly's assistance when he's been nearly killed in the centrifugal machine is unusual. I also think Jaws doesn't suck until the end of the cable car scene and that's about an hour into the film. So really the only part that's out and out silly (other than the dreaded gondola sequence!) is the space battle which is literally the last 30 minutes. Also, Holly is a good Bond girl. Lois Chiles performance is underrated - she is assured, independent, funny. To me, she's far more convincing than Barbara Bach.

Over the years I've become a vocal defender of Moonraker. A lot of outstanding Bond moments in the first hour of that film. My favourite Moore performance along with FYEO. To be honest, it's only the last third that's ridiculous.

A View To A Kill - cos it's so damn weird! Old bond, Walken, Jones, Paris sequence, death in the car wash. It's an odd one!

I can't believe people hate Tomorrow Never Dies. It's my favourite Brosnan film and generally I thought it was regarded by many fans as his best behind Goldeneye.

TND and OP, although in those cases I see the flaws in the films but still enjoy them. I guess LTK is one I outright love while some people don't.

My heart holds a special place for TMWTGG (#6) and for QoS (#8). Both are great movies that unfortunately gets to much criticism here.

I love LALD it was the first one i see and is in my top ten. I see a lot of people on here dont really rate this one but it's my favourite rog film. The Guy Hamilton directed films get a bit of a bashing on here really even GF which is in my top 3 (I can see people's points why they dont like it, but i think it's a classic and so much fun and done with panache).

QOS- yes i see it's flawed but Damn the film just has the darkness that i think they lacked a lot in past Bond films. The first 2o minutes are excellent with the car chase and fight between the Rogue agent and Bond. Yes the editing and script ain't nowhere near the great CR and SF but the film does hold Craig's Best performance as Bond and is the most realistic Bond story. Its film i see that will split Bond fans down the middle. For a long long time.
  • After the third or forth viewing I'm taking to Quantum of Solace. The film's major problem seems to be an underwitten climax, which presumably would have been sorted out had the writers strike not intervened. Greene's henchman is a useless thin bloke in a bad wig who contributed nthing to the film. Instead Bond gets to fight a little weedy bloke in one of James May's midlife crisis shirts who presents no real physical challenge (aside from the axe, obviously!).

The film, however, has heart and tries to show a side of Bond we've never seen before - heartbroken and angry, like we should have seen him in Diamonds are Forever.

It could be just me, but I also see an interesting link between Skyfall and QoS with regards to M: In QoS she learns a valuable lesson: whatever happens, trust Bond. In Skyfall she forgets this with disastrous results for both M and Bond.

    LTK, AVTAK, LALD, OP
  • QoS is a very solid movie. It's still the worst of Craig's three, but I enjoy it alot. A good villain, some awesome action set pieces, and great acting all around. The only weaknesses was the editing, and the henchman. I actually don't really mind Elvis, but he had nothing to do. At all. He got pushed down some stairs and then blown up. Whoopiedoo.

AVTAK is another favorite of mine. Christopher Walken is the PERFECT choice for a villain, and I actually want him to play another. That's how good he is. May Day is a bit... meh though. And the girl is quite annoying. And the firetruck chase is really stupid. But the pros outweigh the cons.

QoS, for the PTS alone. Aston porn and not a rickety DB5 in sight (sorry, but the DBS is just better in every way).
  • Quantum, at times this film is technically brilliant. I always view it as the final act to Casino, relative to what proceeded it i think the film works well. Its well documented that the script was not completed due to the writers strike, and Craig and Forster adopted finishing the script. Though i can overlook the obvious short comings with the script.

The plane sequence for me is very good, the scene crystallized what Quantum/Spectre represent visually and their intent.

For me it's TMWTGG, although DAF comes a close second. DAF has one of my all time-favoite Bond movie lines uttered by one of my all-time favorite Bond allies, Willard White: "Saxby? Burt Saxby? Tell'm he's faaarred!"

I gotta admit, though, my ultimate guilty pleasure is the non-EON CR'67.
  • I don't particularly 'love' any Bond release

Yes there will be favorites that I greatly enjoy, but love seems too strong a word. Can only go over previous mentions such as Moonraker, Golden Gun, The World Is Not Enough and even You Only Live Twice after a recent viewing, but Moonraker would have to be the standout release for this, I always enjoy a watch of that every time, why some people heavily berate it, is a mystery I usually find

Not even LALD? Love isn't a strong enough word for how I feel about films like CR and FRWL.
  • I could never hate a John Barry scored Bond film. If Michael Kamen had scored AVTAK it may have wound up the worst film of the franchise. RE My choices for this thread I would say Moonraker and QoS, #4 and #5 respectively in my rankings.
  • YOLT, DAF, TMWTGG, TWINE and QoS.

The first three are brilliant movies, in my opinion. Maybe love blinded me and I can't see their mistakes, but that's what love is about, huh? ;)

TWINE kinda annoys me (Denise Richards) but at the same time it's so amusing (Sophie Marceau).

I already had problems with QoS, but today it's one of my favorites. It's a very touching film for me because we can still see Vesper everywhere. And the final scene makes so me emotional every single time.
  • @Brady No not even Live and Let Die, but I think if you took Eva Green out of Royale, you wouldn't have it in such high regard ?

I watched a bit of Octopussy recently when there was time, and although always ready for a bit of berating, it's actually a decent watch to be truthful, so worth an inclusion here

@Youonlylivethrice Richards was the worst thing about TWINE, if they had found a different actress it could of been so much better. The same goes for Chiles in Moonraker and Bianchi in From Russia With Love, and of course - d'Abo in the Living Daylights
