What happened in M's office in TWINE?

This has probably been discussed before so I apoligise in advance as I couldn't find anything when searching for an answer. In the opening of TWINE when Bond meets M in her office while her and Robert King are talking, when Bond is sipping his whiskey and sees the liuid has gone all foamy he immediately knows something is up. Am I the only one missing something here? How did he know? I'm guessing it had something to do with a chemical reaction but it was poorly explained.

Some chemical on the money, which turned the money into a bomb, reacted with liquid. It also gave off some sort of smell, which tipped Bond off that something was wrong.

Ok, so the money was booby-trapped with some chemical which made it explosive. Bond was dealing with the money when he got back to mi6 so when he sat in M's office and had the drink the chemical he still had on his hand reacted with the liquid and he knew something was wrong. Do chemicals react in a different way when mixed with whiskey or something? it's a strange moment, either that or i'm being thick.

That was urea, to be precise. Which made the money a fertilizer bomb. And it was explained in the movie.

To be fair, you did get a sense of what was going on, even though you didn't know exactly, the moment Bond touches the liquid. I liked the scene.
