The name's 25. Bond 25, or rather, it's NTTD.

The last two sound more like horror or heroic fantasy titles. Good ones though. I like Grieving Skies too, but not for Bond 24, for obvious reasons.
  • I liked "Emissary of Darkness" myself. "Footsteps of a Comrade-in-Arms" is a bit too long. I'd shorten it to just Comrade.
  • I've been going throught he last few pages, and whilst they're good stand-alone titles, they feel more suited to books than films, let alone a Bond film. They're all a bit too clever.

What I loved about Fleming is that he could take a fairly common phrase and twist it. It would be simple, but mysterious. You might get a vague idea of what it was about, but it would leave a lot to the imagination. As far as I'm concerned, the only non-Fleming titles that fall into these criteria are TWINE and SF.

TWINE was not a Fleming title, but it was directly from Fleming. I also think Goldeneye was, for obvious reasons, very Flemingesque.
  • How about this guy for stuntman on Bond 24? ;-)

  • Hello everyone!

With my first post I'd like to say that I'd like Risico, and I thought that Quantum of Solace was a very good title. Here in Germany the word "Quantum" even bears a nice resemblance to a rarely used german word - "Quäntchen" - that expresses exactly what Bond was hoping to achieve: just a tiny bit of solace. Other favorites found browsing this thread: Forever, for now and A Whisper of Hate. Although the last one sounds as if becoming too personal.

However, the title Shatterhand would surely be awkward in Germany - there's this recurring character Old Shatterhand who stems from western novels by the author Karl May, some kind of a ranger befriending Winnetou, an Apache. Older generations should be very familiar with these... this would be very strange.

Some titles I came up with:

    - Goliath (as in "MI6 rebuilt, now facing much more powerful opponents")
    - Pandora (A woman? Or simply all hell breaking loose? Or a woman responsible for doing this?)
    - Grey Dawn
    - Phoenix
    - Deadlock
    - A Bond of Shadows / A Bond in Shadows / In Shadows
    - Name on a Bullet
    - A Name to Die for
    - A broken Thread

Glad to know someone likes Risico, which is my bet, even though the novel is about narcotics. In terms of plot, they really need to think about something interesting. Risico sounds to be related to gambling, meaning it might be similar to Casino Royale.

Shatterhand will be fine in the English-speaking world, and it sounds hard to decipher.

I prefer Risico. it sounds sleek fitting Mendes' style
My tagline: The world is a big gamble; Bond is the last card.
However, gambling theme is similar to Casino Royale.

    Another: Icebreaker
Tagline: His heart is cold; his will shatters. Bond.
and then we can have another skiing scene hehehe.

Last: The Property of a Lady
Tagline: Bond lures her scent, but never owns her heart
ughhh even though sounds erotic-novelish like 50 shades

this is really the last: Colonel Sun
tagline: Eyes light with hope as the world burns

P.S. I haven't read any bond novel or short stories; I just wiki-search the titles I'm a quite a new bond fan (less than a year old) and still trying to watch all the official movies.

That would have made a great Timothy Dalton movie

I think they should name the film after a villain again.

    Silvertoe

    Just kidding. ;)

I'm serious about my suggestion to name the film after the main villain though. It's been a long time.

I rewatched Quantum of Solace last night and I think The Property of a lady with that rumored Bond 23 plot would be a really good film

    Last Glass Of Sorrow
  • I wouldn't mind:

    Zero Minus Ten
    Property of a Lady
    Risico

    in that order of preference.
  • I honestly think the producers should finish using Fleming Title's. They may not be the best but no one can really argue because it's still Fleming. Remember Octopussy caused a bit of a stir but people eventually accepted it because it was a Fleming title.

Why do you say that? If anything, Eon need to use them sparingly- stretch them out. I mean, in 20+ years time, wouldn't it be nice to say there are still some unused Fleming titles out there?- besides, they've already used two for Craig's tenure.

IMO, Craig's remaining films should not use Fleming short story titles- but hold off for the next actor. In the meantime, Eon should go for entirely original titles as we saw with TND and SF- or at most- pick bits and pieces from the chapters (LTK/TWINE) and chapter titles (Zero Minus/Plus has great potential). Licence Revoked could even make a comeback in the distant future.

BTW @scottross81, welcome to the forums. :)

Obviously they don't have the choice to make original titles, because there are not that many Fleming's titles left and because even if some titles of chapters could work, not all would. What matters the most to me is that the original titles are true to Fleming's spirit. I think SF was and is the most Flemingesque non Fleming title. TND would have been much better titled had they stuck with the their original idea, Tomorrow Never Lies.

Actually, the title of OP was not a big deal at all back in 1983.

Am I the only one who thinks that QOS should have been called 'The Property of a Lady'?

It makes more sense to me. It would have worked as a reference to Vesper's necklace especially considering the final scene. It would have also been way easy for them to drop the title into a line.

It would have definitely been a better title, because it would have worked as a reference to Vesper's necklace as well as Bond's status as the property of M/Her Majesty/England, not to mention that it's way easier to understand than "Quantum of Solace".
  • @doubleoego Great titles. My favorites for kill and country, has a nice ring to it :)

I love QOS as a title, but the connection with the movie seriously lacks. I read somewhere here, maybe even on this thread, that there was talk about Mathis telling Bond a story similar to the one told in the eponymous short story, where he would explain the meaning of "quantum of solace". That would have improved both the movie and the relevance of its title, I think.

That rumor and that was how Bond found out the organization's name was Quantum. I heard the same rumor between that and the line "if I ever marry it will be to airline stewardess" should of been in the film

HECK they even show bond on a plane if they had a female bartender on the plane the line would of worked well been part of the original short story and gotten a ton of laughs from the audience..

and one of 5 things that if I could I would change about Quantum of Solace... Still a great film

that said if Bond 24 is The Property of a Lady

I would hope Mauria Freudstien would make an appearance and Bond at auction.
  • I don't think that the "if I ever marry, it'll be an airline stewardess," line would work very well there, since Bond is drinking to forget his heartbreak over the death of a woman he really did want to marry.

And how would Mathis's telling the story about the "quantum of solace" make Bond realize that the evil organization's name was Quantum? That doesn't make any sense.

I meant the meaning of the expression "quantum of solace", as explained in the short story. They could have changed the organization's name, or just keep it as a coincidence.

I agree, I like it without it. And as you said, Bond's not going to start joking about marriage when he's drinking his sorrows away in an alcohol induced stupor over Vesper.
