PART ONE OF THE EPIC CROSSOVER EVENT WITH THE FLASH AND ARROW — Barry(Grant Gustin) is thrilled when Oliver (guest star Stephen Amell), Felicity (guest star Emily Bett Rickards) and Diggle (guest star David Ramsey) come to Central City to investigate a case involving a deadly boomerang. Excited about teaming up with his friend, Barry asks Oliver if he’d like to help him stop Ray Bivolo (guest star Patrick Sabongui), the meta-human Barry is currently tracking. Bivolo causes people to lose control of their emotions and has been using that skill to robbanks. Unfortunately, the superhero partnership doesn’t go as smoothly as Barry expected. When Oliver tells Barry he still has a lot to learn, Barry sets out to prove him wrong by attempting to stopBivolo alone. However, when Bivolo infects Barry and sets him on a rage rampage, everyone is in danger, and the only one who can stop him is the Arrow. Meanwhile, Iris (Candice Patton) is furious when Eddie (Rick Cosnett) tries to get a task force to stop The Flash, Joe and Dr. Wells(Tom Cavanagh) agree the Arrow is a bad influence on Barry, and Caitlin and Cisco deal with a newteam in S.T.A.R. Labs. Glen Winter directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti & AndrewKreisberg and teleplay by Ben Sokolowski & Brooke Eikmeier (#107).

Note: This review is being written as I watch the episode. This will have no bearing on you, because you won't read it until after I post it, after the episode ends.

Hey, we're back on Captain Boomerang's trail! Nice to know that at least somebody remembered that he was important! ARGUS shows up and cramps Ollie's style, but other than that, the opening was just to tide us over until Cisco and Caitlin showed up in Felicity's office. Cisco is now my new favorite member of Team Flash, because he is making the comparisons between Arrow and the Dark Knight Trilogy that only fans can make. I've been calling Ollie's hangout "The Arrow Cave" since its first appearance, and the idea of an "Arrowmobile" is now something I want. The Team Arrow/Team Flash back-and-forth is back in full force.

And then we cut to Captain Boomerang slaughtering some ARGUS agents, which was awesome. Why couldn't we have gotten anything this cool last night on The Flash?! Dig and his wife/ex-wife get caught up in the action, then Ollie and Roy drop by. Oh, and who's that speeding past Thea, who's talking to somebody on the phone? That guy nobody asked to show up! Yup, in a fantastic reversal of last night's "Ollie pops in from out of f*cking nowhere" moment, Barry pops in from out of f*cking nowhere.

Oh, hey, despite the fact that I can't really tell by his accent, Captain Boomerang is Australian, and Lyla is the one he has a big grudge against, since she had to make a judgment that meant he needed to die after a mission.

This cuts to Barry having a lot of fun on Ollie's weird pole thing that I've never learned the name of. I'm not going to lie, my jaw dropped while he speed used it. It was funny as hell. Lyla doesn't know who Barry is, because Diggle "keep's secrets for a living". That's just awkward. Then comes some speed forensics, as Barry recreates several detonated boomerangs. "Kaboom-Boomerang". Cisco... you fool.

Now we get to Laurel talking to her dad, and Barry comes with Oliver. Captain Lance is less than enthusiastic to see him, but he still helps Team Flash Vs. Arrow find the man who helped Captain Boomerang make his boomerangs. Some funny moments there when Barry finds out that Oliver was a "former member. Probably" of the Russian mob, then he takes out a bunch of goons because he "had eight seconds to kill".

Things get a little morals vs. heroism when Barry watches Oliver "interrogate" the dude who makes the kaboomerangs (I fully intend to trademark that). It leads to two interesting scenes:

    1. Barry speeds through the city and drops the kaboomerang man off in Captain Lance's office, surprising the hell out of Captain Lance.
    2. A morals vs. heroism argument between Barry and Ollie, where Ollie lays down the fact that he doesn't operate in a city where there can always be a happy ending. It's a good scene, but the focus on seeing Ollie from Barry's point of view means that this scene is just a little out of place on Arrow, where we've seen Oliver kill people. This scene probably should have been in The Flash.

Back at the Arrow Cave with weirdly sombre music (and a nice little joke about the codename "Speedy"), Ollie and Lyla have a nice little conversation about the differences between Ollie and Barry, and then Felicity hacks an ARGUS satellite to find Captain Boomerang.

Oh, yeah, there have been some flashbacks, and now we cut back to one. Oliver is in Hong Kong, interrogating someone for Waller. The subject (who's name escaped me the second Waller said it) is taunting Oliver by telling him he doesn't have the stomach for torture. Oh, this guy's a bomber who planted a bomb in Hong Kong, and it goes off just after Ollie asks him where it is.

Back to the present day, and Diggle is talking to Cisco and Roy. I enjoyed Roy's line "Barry can walk on water?" because it was just hilarious. As is the semi-awkward conversation where Cisco is still geeking out over being around super heroes. This man clearly blogged about comics bfore finding employment at Star Labs.

Now we have Ollie and Barry taking down some goons that apparently work for Captain Boomerang. This scene was purely a moment of distraction, because Captain Boomerang has found the Arrow Cave, where Lyla is at the moment. A very good shootout/boomerang fight ensues, where Lyla takes a boomerang in the chest. Cue commercial break!

Back from commercial and Team Flash Vs. Arrow returns to the Arrow Cave so that Barry can flash Lyla to the hospital while Ollie flashbacks to Hong Kong and gets his ass chewed out by Waller after the explosion. He has no conviction, and because of this, the deaths from the bomb are on him.

Present day again, Team Flash Vs. Arrow are up in Thea's club getting served by Thea herself, and Cisco's got the hots for her. Then he's told he can't have her. There's another differences conversation where Cisco and Caitlin talk about how they don't take their Central City sh*tstorm seriously. We then cut to a Barry/Ollie conversation, where Oliver tells Barry that his own situation is destroying him, that he can't be Oliver Queen and has to be the Arrow. Barry tells him to basically go f*ck himself, he's still a human being, not just the Arrow. Cue Felicity coming downstairs to tell the two costumes that she knows where Captain Boomerang is. Dude in a trench coat with boomerangs sticking out from under it, he really shouldn't be hard to find.

He's at the train station, like every villian goes to escape a city. I guess you can refuse both the metal detector and the pat down at a train station. I couldn't do that at my f*cking high school, but okay. Barry flashes the innocents away while Ollie stands there with a bow and arrow, and so Captain Boomerang reveals that he's got bombs throughout the city. Yep. Clearly, the Arrow/Flash writers just grabbed a list of good crossover stuff and just checked the boxes. Of course there's a situation where the two heroes have to choose between saving the city or stopping the baddie.

So, of course, Barry goes speeding off to find the city while Ollie has a bow vs. boomerang fight that obviously leads to a fist fight at the same time. Barry finds the first bomb, and finds out he's got a camera in that suit. He finds that he needs to diffuse all five bombs at the same time, so he goes and gets Team Flash Vs. Arrow and plants them at the other four bombs before returning to his own. They then diffuse the bombs while Oliver has a mouth off contest with Captain Boomerang. Oh, hey, Cisco called him Captain Boomerang! He finally found a good name! F*ck you, Multiplex, Prism and whatever dumbass names Cisco has called people!

Ollie doesn't kill Captain Boomerang, but he does leave an arrow in his hand. Barry just shrugs it off with "You just couldn't resist, could you?"

Now we're in a hospital room with Diggle and Lyla, who's just woken up. Diggle finally asks her to marry him again, which she obviously agrees to. That one building from Gotham that always has smoke coming out of the chimney is in the background. Don't know why.

Team Flash Vs. Arrow get ready to part ways. Captain Boomerang has has been thrown in the prison on Lost Island. Team Arrow gives Barry a place to hang his suit up next time he shows up, and Team Flash gives Ollie a new costume, other than the hood.

Back to the flashback zone, Waller dumps another subject on Ollie and tells him to interrogate. Yep.

Back to the present, we're back to the Flash Vs. Arrow zone, because it's time for these two main characters to finally figure out which one can beat the other. Ollie lines up his arrows, Barry catches them, we pull back into the word "Arrow", which Barry is running around in.

Oh, hey, cool... Ollie gets to go toe-to-toe with Ra's Al Ghul next week. Awesome.

I knew the Arrow side of this crossover would be a thousand times better.

    Pros:
+Still more Team Flash/Team Arrow dialogue, which has been the best part of this crossover.
+Captain Boomerang was suitably badass, which is more than I can say for Prism last night.
+This episode felt more like it was part of a crossover.
+Cisco, I'm so happy you speak for the audience.

    Cons:
-Thea was pretty much wasted for a scene where Cisco drools over her.
-Captain Boomerang checked off the "I'm a villain" checklist near the end with the bombs and the going to the train station bit.
-The Lyla thing was a little too easily dealt with. Would have been nice to see her in a coma over the next few episodes, then Diggle springs the "Marry me". Oh well.

I knew the Arrow half would be better.

Arrow is in my top 3 favorite shows ever, along with Battlestar Galactica (reimaging) and The Walking Dead. The Flash is becoming a great one as well. I'm looking forward to seeing Laurel as the new Canary!

We start this episode off with Ollie climbing up a mountain, which then shifts to 48 hours earlier at the SCPD Christmas party, and Ollie drops off a criminal on Captain Lance's doorstep. As soon as Captain Lance leaves, Ollie is instantly assaulted by League of Shadows/Assassins (I forget which one Arrow uses, but I'll be reminded later, I'm sure) ninjas, who drop Ollie off on Nyssa Al Ghul's doorstep, who is very pissed off with him.

Okay, I was right. Assassins. They give Ollie an ultimatum: 48 hours or people die. Laurel is then seen standing by Sarah's grave, talking to her. Thea shows up, because she was apparently visiting her mother's grave. Interesting just how much it obviously looks like summer, despite the fact that everybody's dressed for winter.

Anyway, Laurel explains to Thea that Sarah is dead and Captain Lance doesn't know. We then cut to Felicity's office, where Brandon Routh comes to see her, apparently having just learned that there's a cafeteria in the building. He wants things to not be bad between them, but Felicity's not giving a sh*t. Ollie and Diggle explain Nyssa's ultimatum and Roy stands there in the background. Literally. That's all he's doing.

Flashback time, as Ollie returns to the Yamashiro household, where Male Yamashiro (who's name escapes me, but I think he was just at the League of Assassins meeting a moment ago, and I still forgot his name, seriously, I only remember Tatsu's name because of Beware the Batman). That dude that Ollie was tasked to torture at the end of the previous episode talked in between episodes, and gave up some bioweapons, or information about them at least.

Back in the present, Felicity's gotten the DNA listing off the arrow she gave to Star Labs, and... Shamaylan Twist Incoming... Ollie killed Sarah. They ain't sh*tting. Ollie did it. DNA match. Obviously he didn't, but maybe something will come of it.

Oliver's back to climbing. And then we're back to 48 hours prior. Ollie, Diggle and Felicity are arguing about the real identity of the killer, who Ollie thinks is Malcom Merlyn (and, let's face it, it probably was).

Flashback territory again, and Ollie and Yamashiro Man are breaking into the biotech building where the bioweapon was being stored. They find out it's already been stolen and then the present interupts us again.

Laurel's mother returns to Starling, which surprises the hell out of Laurel. Ooooh... and now Laurel needs to lie about where Sarah is. Back to the Arrow Cave, Ollie is beating up a training dummy as Felicity finds out something about a plane that went from Corto Maltease to Starling, which had Malcom Merlyn on it. Roy still hasn't said a word, at least until we get to the Arrow Cave, and hands Felicity security footage of the plane landing. Ooh... Seems like Thea was on the plane, too... Something tells me Thea's going to be revealed as the murderer, which would be awesome.

Back to Ollie climbing up a mountain, and he almost slips, and then back to 48 hours earlier. I'm starting to wonder if Ollie will ever actually face off with Ra's Al Ghul. Anyway, everybody's suggesting that Thea may be the killer, but Ollie's completely ignoring this possibility. Ray is stalking Felicity, apparently. He still wants to patch things up with Felicity, who discovers that Ray is actually cheating on someone with her. Except, he's not. This woman was killed by Mirakuru thugs at the end of season 2.

Ollie goes to what I assume is his apartment, where Thea has set up a tree. He questions Thea about Malcom Merlyn, and then we're back to a flashback. Ollie and Yamashiro Man are interrogating the man that stole the bioweapon, and g*ddamn! these are short flashbacks tonight.

Laurel is having dinner with her mother, who realizes something is up about Sarah. She's all but certain that Sarah's dead, and asks Laurel if she is. Laurel admits that she is, and that her dad doesn't know, and asks her mother to keep it secret.

Now we cut to Ra's Al Ghul's headquarters on the sixth planet of the Hoth system where he spars/slaughters his men. Nyssa walks in and tells her father that the time is up. He sends Nyssa back to Starling, and then we're back in the Arrow Cave. Ollie is dead certain that Thea didn't kill Sarah, and he's still trying to get Team Arrow to listen to him, but they still think that Ollie is just ignoring the obvious. I think they're right. Either way, Felicity gets Ollie to don the hood and ask his sister that way, where Thea shows her badassery by holding her own against Ollie (kicking him in the nuts, in fact) and then jumping off a f*cking balcony. Yep.

Ooh! Lookie here! Ollie's climbing the mountain again. Where the hell is he, Everest? Malcom goes to see Ollie at Verdant, and he doesn't seem happy. Ollie, I mean. He's pissed off. He nearly chokes Malcom right then and there. Somehow, Malcom has video proof of Thea killing Sarah, who was apparently under the control of a plant. Looks like Malcom did this to force Ollie to kill Ra's for him. Malcom gives Ollie the ultimatum that he needs to give himself up to Ra's, or else Thea dies at Ra's hands.

Ollie broods at the Arrow Cave, realizing that he pretty much needs to do what he needs to do. And then we're back to the flashbacks, where Ollie learns about this damn mind control plant 5 years ago. Tatsu is teaching her son something while China White breaks into the room. Ensuing is a badass swordfight between Tatsu and China White, and then we're back in the present.

Ollie meets with Nyssa, demanding to see her father, because he's got the balls to know that Ra's Al Ghul is in Starling. Ollie and Ra's meet for the first time, where Ra's is very unimpressed with him. Ollie gives himself up, but Nyssa doesn't believe him. Ra's doesn't buy it either, but he still accepts Ollie's invitation to the latest Mortal Kombat tournament. Looks like Arrow is being somewhat faithful to Ra's Al Ghul's immortality powers, because he doesn't look like he's old enough for someone to have last challenged him 67 years ago, unless he means his twin brother, in the womb.

10 to 1 this next return from the commercial break will start off with Ollie climbing the g*ddamn mountain again. Okay. Making it to the top. Oh, hey, I was right, that one ninja from the beginning is Yamashiro Man. Why was his reveal at the beginning not a twist? Oh, well.

Laurel and her mother are now at Sarah's grave, and her mother is reciting a story from Laurel and Sarah's childhood. Laurel has vowed to destroy the ones who killed Sarah. Wait'll she finds out it's Thea, she'll sh*t.

Thea and Ollie's apartment, and Thea's cooked up a story involving a homocidal bird breaking through the window. Ollie tries to get Thea to realize that Malcom is not the man she wants to think he is, and is, in fact, the sonuvab*tch we all know he is. Then Ollie pays his respects by embracing his little sister and then we're back in flashback land.

Yamashiro Man and Ollie return to the apartment and find that Tatsu is missing. Flashback over.

Felicity shows up at the office and tries to get the real story about Brandon Routh. He's actually extremely forthcoming, and shows her the tech he's working on, including the ATOM suit.

Back to the Arrow Cave, and Diggle and Roy show up before Felicity. Ollie's about to set out, Dig wants to come, but Ollie says no. He tells Roy to look after Thea. Felicity, surprisingly, tells Ollie to kill Ra's Al Ghul. She's afraid that Ollie will keep his non-lethality pledge and Ra's will use that to his advantage. They embrace, and... Ollie admits his love to her. Holy sh*t, we've got eight minutes left. Yeah, we're barely getting a duel. Ollie's made it to the top of Echo Base.

Ollie walks up to Stone Henge and strips. He then takes two swords from the pile of weapons, and there's Ra's Al Ghul standing there, talking about his past. He then strips, and... yeah... we ain't gettin' no real duel. G*ddamnit. Ra's has no weapon, vowing to kill Ollie with the very swords he chose. They then start fighting, and Ra's lives up to his promise to take the swords. He takes one in less than a second of fighting. He's beating the sh*t out of Ollie, and sticks that sword right in his gut. Then in his chest. Ra's prays for Ollie, then kicks him off the cliff. If that doesn't say "To Be Continued", you clearly know no language of man. The show will be back Wednesday January 21.

Ra's pretty much confirmed that there is at least a version of the Lazarus Pit in the Arrowverse when he said his last blood fued was 67 years ago. His physical age looks to be no older than 45ish so he dailed back the clock somehow.

And so, Yamashiro Man will likely grab Ollie off the base of the mountain and throw him in it. Likely as some sort of payback for something Ollie did for him during the Hong Kong flashbacks.

I'm a little disappointed with this season's flashbacks. They lack the emotional strength of the destruction of a friendship, like last season had.

With the Vixen animated series and the potential for the Supergirl series in development at CBS sharing their universe, and then this news of an Atom spin-off, the Arrowverse could get pretty big pretty soon. Funny how the CW's last popular DC show never had a single spin-off.

^Not spin-offs, but there were attempts to make more DC shows with other characters. They just didn't take off. There was "Birds of Prey" which was an ok show, they did make an Aquaman pilot, but nothing progressed with that.

Yes, and I heard it was horrible. I guess it all has to do with Marvel's Cinematic Universe starting the DC TV universe and people going with that. During Smallville's run, there wasn't something like that.

I pretty interested to see how the ATOM is going to play in Arrow's universe and how they manage his powers and the like.

I don't know. DC had a shared universe on TV before Smallville even began. The DC Animated Universe was an amazing group of shows, and should have been the blueprint to follow because they worked so well. Even the worst performing series (The Zeta Project) got two seasons, not to mention the four animated Batman films they made during that time.

You know what I liked best about the fight? We've established that Oliver was a great fighter throughout seasons 1-3 only to see Ra's barely break a sweat...

This makes me drool at the prospect of BATMAN existing in 'CW Arrow' canon. In the comics, he was the only one who ever stood a chance against Ra's in hand to hand.

Sadly, the odds of this happening are slim.

It would have also been awesome if Liam Neeson could have played the role again. I don't mind the actor portraying him here, but there's just something off about him, and I think it has largely to do with the fact that the only two Ra's Al Ghul's I fell in love with are Liam Neeson and David Warner.

(Also, fun fact: "Liam" is considered spelled incorrectly by my browser. Ra's is not.)
