@Suivez_ce_parachute, no film is made without plot holes, and there is always something I would correct (if given the choice) in a film, no matter how grand or horrid it is.
  • edited June 2013 Posts: 2,015
But in a plot-driven movie, plotholes are big issues, people feel cheated. Imagine the season 3 explains that Sherlock survived the fall because well he's Sherlock, no need to explain, the audience didn't expect him to die anyway. And well, according to the books, you don't need any true explanation :) With Bond in Skyfall, it works, but here imagine the Internet reactions ! Even in FRWL for instance, it would have been quite a problem I think.

PS : Mendes said he toyed with the idea of killing Bond. Now imagine he's back for 2 more movies for the 2 final movies of Craig... he proposes it to EON. They're so puzzled they have to check first with Nolan if he would be able to handle that and still continue after... [I'm not saying I'm thinking this, I'm saying it's easy to imagine out of the box things]

@Suivez_ce_parachute, a spoiler alert would have been much appreciated. I haven't seen season two yet, so thank you for that. There's a spoiler tag option for a reason.

Having said that, you have to suspend some belief going into the films, I think. With that, you can pick apart so many scenes from the Bond films that don't make sense but were given no explanation. How did Bond catch up with the plane in the PTS of GE? How did Vesper know how to correct the defibrillator for Bond and save him in CR? Are there plot holes? Sure, but I don't let them ruin the film for me. If there are a few nitpicks of this because it's more plot-driven than anything else, imagine if there wasn't much of a plot, how many holes people may have been able to dig out.

On the contrary, I think the less a plot there is, the less plotholes are problematic. I have yet to see someone really complaining about a plothole in a comedy for instance.

Eh??? People are putting too much of an infinite amount of faith in time between movies. Yes, nobody wants another QoS but that won't happen because the script for Bond 24 is by and large better than the state it was for QoS not to mention we have a superior screen writer doing the treatment this time around instead if P and W. secondly, there was a 3 year gap between TWINE and DAD and look what happened there, we got arguably one of the worst if not the worst Bond film in the series. Wether it's 3, 4 or hell an even 10 years, there's still no guarantee the next film will be the second coming with a longer gap. There's nothing wrong with 2 year intervals, it's not impossible, especially with the success in popularity and box office takings of the last movie.

    Indeed.

QOS was flawed because of the writers strike and incoherent editing not by the time frame they had to produce it. Yes it was a big mistake not to postpone it once it was clear the script was in shape to be filmed but that's a different issue.

SF had years of polish on its script and it still ended up like Swiss cheese. It was only the high calibre of actors and director that elevated SF to such great heights not the script. Get in the quality of Craig, Dench, Fiennes, Bardem, Finney and Wishaw decently directed and even DAD might be watchable.

You're right. It's far from impossible. I blame those bad films on lack of talent but certainly not too short a time. The Connery films had the right people working on them and those movies came out every year. There was plenty to organise in these films too.

"SF had years of polish on its script and it still ended up like Swiss cheese. It was only the high calibre of actors and director that elevated SF to such great heights not the script."

True, true. Time isn't really the issue unless it's a very short time and two years isn't, as long as all involved can show a generous amount of commitment. Only people who can should be hired.

Bond films have never been known for their intricate plotting anyway. It's everything else, including some great character movement that revolve around the central story that make a good Bond film/book.

Will start shooting next summer? Very unlikely, as everybody here thinks, they won't go for a summer release. Neiter do i believe, they have the film in the can for a year until they release it. So IMO, bullocks

It not terrible. Over the years with 2 new Bond movie. It terrible when it 4 years. Get that right.

Note: I let my self lead by fandom.

I think Hooper is to much gritty and to much political, whole movie be a bit like M speach from Skyfall. But somebody like Peter Morgan, Ron Howard and Robert Mitchell mabey have done some simalar. With Peter Morgan we never got the actres who play Severine but a real asian actress and i think i prefer him above Hooper. But he don't whant burn his fingers. Hooper possible have more experience then him. Robert Mitchell possible wil make another CR. When i saw The Queen on tv i whant to take a look to it, but then i saw it whas documentry/24 violece and cancel it. Sam Mendes directer of Road To Perdition i think more we get a movie like QOS. I expect more drama. A good thing i can think about Hooper is mabey some cinematograqphy style look like more on QOS.

Yates i think have this experiece on smaller scale with Potter. The fift novel is my second favorite Harry Potter book. It go moost deapth symbol more then only showing Umbridge in the movie as naive M like to see be in QOS or the people who believe Dominic Green is death. But the movie disapointed, only the effects feels better then Harry Potter 4. Couple of days i watching Stardust and whyle some production design/effects be visible i think Vaughn should have done Harry Potter 5 with that team.

People should watch my Property of Lady and 007 in New york teasers to understand a bit what i mean. In my opnion there stil have't found a director, Director not yet rated. Story spread in 2 movies with the good elements of Thunderball (mystery of Quantum as seen in QOS), Yolt (See the roof top scene and Japanese training), OHMSS , Octopussy, and a bit LALD/TMWTGG/TMND.

Ang Lee. In 2006, i wrote that i have liked to see Michael Apted have made a sequel to Hulk. Hulk in my opnion is like Twine but have to much drama and to slow. With Nicolas Winding Refn footage of his trailer of Only God Forgives i must again think about my wish to see rebulding Bond and deaper Bond like for go deeper then LALD/TMWTGG, extra suport by the dragons in maintitle of Skyfall. Only on that way i see Ang Lee or Nicolas Winding Refn work. In this case people should watch my Bond 23 Master in this game trailer.

Shane Black. Complane i heard about Iron Man 3 is that it don't have humour and the first Iron Man one of the best elements be humor. But i heard before QOS don't have humor, but i think QOS is more Bond then Skyfall. Mabey intresting choose.

Morten Tyldum. Trailer of Head Hunters (Hodejegerne) looks intresting, his name pop up earlier but i have some doubt.

I can't remember or i already sugest him earlier, but i saved the imdb page of this directer mabey there should consider John Maybury (The Jacket, The Edge of Love) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0562266/

This does seem like bullshit merely conjured up as Bardem is her husband and was in SF.

But at the same time for those reasons could be very likely, and also fantastic. Cruz is a damn fine actress and if the script has already been written its likely then that they know what type of role they have for her. We know from the SF publicity tour that Silva was always Bardem's part to loose maybe the Bond 24 script has a role tailor-made for Cruz. I do hope so, I recently saw her in Nine; which is an awful movie and actually left me feeling rather depressed but she is by far the best thing in it by a country mile, bring so many colours to the table: sexy, vulnerable, playful, tragic etc.

I hope she plays an evil Bond girl ala Xenia or Electra. The series has been lacking a central female villain for a while.

Whats interesting about the possible Summer 2014 start date is that it may not necessarily mean a Summer 2015 release.

Most big-budget films work to around an 18 month schedule. Bond is quite unique as from the commencement of filming to the actual release of the movie is a lot shorter at around 11 months sometimes less. Also what else is interesting is that most other big-budget affairs don't usually film as long as Bond does, for instance Iron Man 3 shot for around 4-5 months while SF took around 6-7 months. Continuing this comparison IM3 had a year in post while Bond had under 4 months. Bond productions almost unnecessarily make life far more difficult for themselves.

I always thought that the appointment of a Mendes type director would mean that the prods would have to alter their schedules to accommodate him; and they did to an extent with SF which started filming in early November 2011 compared to say CR which didn't start shooting till the end of Jan/start of Feb 2006. Therefore giving Mendes more time in post.

Maybe Sam wants to shoot next summer so he can have a healthy 8-10 months to edit the thing properly.

I can't believe people here is giving so much credit to this "news" from the tabloid Daily Mail. The only reliable source in this tabloid is Baz Bamigboye and he's not the author of this article. The tone of it is much more gossip than movie news and the woman who wrote it doesn't even seem to write about movies, so I don't see how the hell she could scoop news about casting and start date of Bond 24.
By the way, here there are other articles from her...seems more garbage than other to me...

@ry183 exactly! I don't understand why this latest bit if news is being given any sort of real attention. Penelope Cruz, Bardem's wife as the new Bond girl?? Common sense should be automatic at this stage, we all know that about now, the usual bullcrap and unfounded castings are going to crop up and furthermore, unless its been unequivocally confirmed direct from EoN then any Bond-related article from the mail that isn't written by Baz gets no face time.

it still a rumor an obviously fake one but still something to discuss.

I would be fine with her as a Bond girl or in my bed ;)

  • Well, after reading several pages it appears that we are just an EON press statement away from confirming Mendes as the "house director" for the rest of Craig's run. Hopefully Deakins will return as well.

As for the Cruz thing, even as an American I know better than to put much stock into anything that comes from the DM about Bond short of something from Baz. Yet there is a connection through Bardem to the franchise so it could happen. Personally, I like Salma Hayek even better but Mrs.Bardem is indeed gorgeous and can act (loved her in "Blow"), so this is not a bad idea if it comes to fruition. Just good to see the wheels are turning over at EON and that progress towards the next film is being made.

@Risico007, I hope I don't fall into the same category: I love QoS.

On topic, I really don't know how to feel about Cruz. She's incredibly beautiful and doesn't look her age, but it's probably a quick rumor concocted by her being married to Bardem. Like someone else said, though, it's plausible she's in talks because Bardem said something to someone. Time will tell.

One thing to point out so many were quick to throw out Bardem Mendes etc before Skyfall and all of them were announced so who knows.

and in response to Creasy I do to I find it a strong follow up to Casino Royale the opera scene alone makes Quantum of Solace one of my favorite Films alone. For all of Skyfall's talk of humor a few lines did make me smile but the funniest line in all of Craig's era in my opinion

"Can I offer an opinion I really think you all should find a better place to meet?"

    Love that line :D

Well, the "small" difference is that the Bardem rumor was announced by Deadline (one of the most reliable sources of movie news), while this one is from...a gossip journalist who works for The Daily Mail tabloid.

You all act like I've updated a IMDB page or something. Is Cruz's involvement not at least worth discussing? This discussion is for all rumors and details involving B24's production, and I find this rumor relevant.

Quite. Seeing as the director hasnt even been appointed yet its a little early to start casting dont you think?

Just shows how desperate the tabs are for Bond titbits coming out with crap like this a full 2 years before any chance of the film being released.

Is this what Bondmania was like in the 60s?

Imagine being on these boards between 1963 and 1969. Wouldve been absolutely mental!

At these times, there was far less PR. At the height of Bondmania, Sean Connery was publicly giving interviews which were critical of the producers, like when he said the movies were released to close to one another, that too much marketing around it was killing the joy of the movies, etc..

Nowadays, everyone involved in the movie is fantastic in every interview, whether they're talking about Ian Fleming or the sound editors. Empire or Total Film, I don't remember which one, had once a short feature in which they compared interviews during marketing campains to interviews done several years after by the same persons, it was very funny.

My own favorite example to prove to friends that PR interviews were irrelevant, is the bonus of the LOTR DVD in which Jackson explained how great the producers were, while at the same time they were in a very public huge legal battle over the money.

Look out Sean Connery saying he didn't read DAF made the headline of this website, and some have concluded here that it shows how Craig and Mendes "who've read all Fleming books" are much more committed. What I know is that Sean Connery spoke the truth, and that for Craig and Mendes we'll probably never know - but what I'm sure is that we'll never hear them say anything else as long as they're tied to the franchise... There's a French TV show in which, if they came to it, they may face a Ian Fleming quizz to check they know their stuff. Guess what, they've got almost no one from Hollywood :)
