This photo shows the aspect ratios of the Skyfall standard release and the Skyfall IMAX release and the true IMAX aspect ratio: https://static.imax.com/media/filebrowser/uploads/imax-aspect_ratios061912.jpg
2.4:1 -> Skyfall as envisioned by Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins
1.9:1 -> Skyfall IMAX aspect ratio
1.43:1 -> The real IMAX aspect ratio (If they end up using IMAX cameras for shooting some scenes of Bond 24, those scenes will be shown in this aspect ratio in IMAX cinemas.)
I remember posting here a image from a making-of of the PTS.
Mendes and Deakings image : the extra whose back is shot by the camera in front of the car, is perceived by the audience as an extra, his head is cut off the frame - he's not important to the story. IMAX image : the extra is seen in full, like a main character, the eyes of the audience look at him, there is some confusion : is it Bond reacting to the car stunt ? But why is he out of focus then ?
Deakins : 'I had thought it would compromise the framing but the IMAX image is so 'in your face' that it seems to me the audience is only really looking at the central portion, the 2:35 we really framed for.'
So people actually spent more money for an image the movie makers did not really care about on set in the first place, and even considered as a little problem to deal with :) But, hey, bigger is better !
PS : I just read on a French IMAX movie forum that for scenes with CG, they simply zoomed in, because the CG was not done outside the 2:35 frame - an hint it was really a business coup, not an early choice. So yes, you actually have less image in the "IMAX version" on the sides in these scenes :) This "IMAX release" really is close to fraud IMO ! And not many people are proud of it I think.
I agree that it's basically pointless to see a movie in an IMAX cinema if it wasn't at least partially shot with IMAX cameras (by the way, no feature film has ever been completely shot with IMAX cameras yet).
There is a pretty good chance Bond 24 will be partially shot with IMAX cameras considering Hoytema is the DP (who used IMAX cameras on Interstellar) and considering what IMAX's CEO Rich Gelfond said back in September: "...and Bond is probably going to have either our cameras or our aspect ratio."
