I cannot help but feel that we are being observed by EONs marketing branch as a test audience to see how various poster designs are received. At least we seem to have finally found a design that most here are happy with...

I think DC looks better in the dark suit vs. the white tux. It's more 'spy' (including his more serious expression here) while the other one was more glamour/casual. I would have preferred if they had changed up Seydoux' outfit for this new poster as well, just to make it different, but I'm ok with it.

We definitely are, so let's all choose our words carefully.
  • I think I am the only one who prefers the earlier released posters :-P. I especially love the standee poster. Simple, and more Bond-esque as opposed to the posters that were released today. But has a funny smirk on his face. And I adore Bond in that white tuxedo. Trendsetting again. I also prefer the gold fonts:

The newer ones are much better, love the use of colors.
  • Weren't we spoilt yesterday? Some great bits of publicity. The TV spot is good and I love the dialogue between Bond and Madeleine - it reminds me of the "half-monk, half-hitman" interaction in Casino Royale (which I still think had the best dialogue of the Craig era). The noise of the helicopter spin is chilling and epic. The problem I have with TV spots is that any action they include is always just snippets - so you don't get to see much detail. But we won't have to wait long to see the whole thing anyway. How many days now?

The posters are spot on. If that does become the final poster - we've got the best one since CR simply for the blend of colours. Like the suit, although still think I prefer him in Brioni. Brilliant, anyway.

I was watching the new TV spot and I noticed that the shot of Bond firing in Austria has been touched up a bit since the last trailer.

    Second TV spot

As you can see the first TV spot uses another take and it's not as cropped as in the other trailers/spots. The grading has been changed a little from a more bright tone to a more green-ish one. I always like when you see some small changes on shots when trailers are releases. It shows that the movie is being worked on

Good point. I think it's obvious that the general tonality and contrast in the latest tv spot shots have improved in comparison with the previous trailers

I noticed also that the black levels seem to have been increased in the newest TV spot and the overall sharpness looks more prominent as well. At least it looks that way on my screen. Most noticeable in the shot of Bond crossing the Austrian lake.

These shots instantly remind me of metal gear solid, where snake gets past the infra red beams of the tank hanger, before his battle with vulcan raven in the snowy canyons.

Maybe it's just me but in the trailer, not the TV spot they show bond looking in his rear view mirror and I swear it's not Craig but a stunt double? Call me crazy but if you pause it right when he flips the switch causing the fire to come out you can see his face in the mirror...

    Thanks @ggl007.
Another color change I noticed is this one:

    New TV Spot.
    Screen_Shot_2015_09_11_at_14_50_48.png

This shot worries me a little bit, because I like the blue tone to these scenes. It feels too dark in the new Spot. I hope it's not like this in the final film.

    EDIT:
@CASINOROYALE It is Craig's face in the car mirror. I understand what you mean why it looks strange. I think it's because the mirror stretches his face more wider and it looks like someone else. If you stretch the screenshot out making it less wide you can see it's Daniel.

Yes, and even some takes of some shots can be made specifically for the trailer (I saw that on a French set). Kad & O even made a successful gag in a movie of them (gorgeous girls cross the screen for no reason and the person in charge explain "ah yes, this is for the trailer !")

  • Hi guys, I typically don't post but come on daily to see what's going on. As someone who does a lot of editing work, my guess is that a different LUT (bit like a colour scheme) has been applied by the trailers editor. Especially as it's being carried out externally. My guess would be that once the master edit is locked, then and only then will the final colouring grading be done as the final step along with audio work.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that all shots: color grading-wise, contrast, sharpness, saturation, et.. are in flux until the final DI that probably has not been done yet.
  • I forgot to post a typical example of this:

    https://youtu.be/qi94JM3zkxk

This also shows the evolution of VFX throughout the timeframe of post. A bit like the screens in Skyfall where Silva is introduced and Chris Corbold being added as the driver of tube train.

Another color change I noticed is this one: That's pretty much the way it works. I was told by an industry insider that on Tom Cruise's film Oblivion changes were being made up to a week before it's release as the production team wrestled to get the right balance. Skyfall also heavily re-worked Patrice's death. The trailers version is totally different from what actually appeared in the film, I believe it was changed to a digital version for censorship purposes.

It is even possible that some of the footage shown in trailers is not in the final cut of the movie. Such things happen quite often.

As a comparison of the trailer showing different Patrice deaths in Skyfall and then the actual version used in the film, just hows fluid things change.

Film Version looks entirely CGI based with him bouncing off the side of the building
    https://youtu.be/kUyrRn-9rEQ?t=146

Trailer Version he falls forwards head first, looks like a practical stunt effect.

Yes, that's true sadly. Like the famous Hitchcock Patrice fall in the SF trailer (which was changed for the final film) or DC jogging in London (which was omitted in the final cut) or Silva's up tempo delivery of
"So what's yours?" in the trailer (which was changed for a more boring delivery, imho, in the final film).

Yeah, and that's even more likely for TV spots as they tend to be done on a tighter timeframe - they just put whatever the 'latest' version of the footage is.

Usually the way this works for trailers is that the editors are given a watermarked workprint of the film and some of the dailies if needed to edit from and then once the edit is locked the studio inserts all the title cards, replaces the watermarked footage with the latest HQ footage, and then colour-times the footage and mixes the audio for release.

With Bond it's a bit different as it's more closely done in conjunction with Barbara/MGW/Mendes, with Chinagraph always consulting with them, as opposed to several trailerhouses doing variants and then EON picking which one to release. And I've mentioned this here before - the editors and Jeff Pfeifer who does the score work in very close conjunction.
  • It is funny how things change. I'm a massive fan of Paul Ritter who played Guy Haynes and remember a Sunday newspaper supplement showing him with Mr White from the deleted segment at the end of QOS. I'd love to have seen it and I believe it floated about online for a bit...just have the still to think on..
