Agreed. I also wouldn't mind it if whoever did QOS returned.

Or if they want some new blood, how about the guy who does all of Chris Nolan's movies?

I assume you mean Wally Pfister? He's moved on to directing.

Hoyte van Hoytema is Nolan's new guy.

    My choices would be:

    Emmanuel Lubezki
    Robert Elswit
Roberto Schaeffer (who did QoS and is a very good cinematographer as proven by his other works)

In actual fact, this makes me wonder who is up next. Ellen Kuras maybe.

There is no way they would choose her. Yeah, she worked with Mendes once but choosing her after what Deakins did with Skyfall would be a bad joke. They need to get one of the great cinematographers (Emmanuel Lubezki, Robert Richardson, etc.) on board.

Certainly sad news but there are great cinematographers out there, some have been name already. I would like to add one of my favourites, Eduardo Serra, not because he's a fellow countryman but because he's bloody amazing (e.g. HP and the Deathly Hallows, Blood Diamonds, Girl With Pearl Earring).

We do have to remember though that this isn't official and if he's decided to leave he might be lured back just as Mendes were!

I think it's likely that they already have a cinematographer on board.

This is a left field choice that won't happen but what about Michael Slovis? He was the cinematographer on Breaking Bad and that looked great.

I did mean him yeah. Didn't know he'd moved onto directing. Shame because there were some great shots in the Batman films and Inception.

However, Deakins will not be returning with Sam Mendes to shoot "Bond 24" next year. "He's got a great idea for another film, which is really an extension [of 'Skyfall'] but from my point, I don't know what else I could do with it, really."

There we go, then. If Deakins feels he can't give any more, why return? I look forward to hearing more about the ideas for the new film going forward.

    Thanks @PanchitoPistoles.

Just saw this news on a separate site. Absolutely ruined my day. Now I can't post a video of me screaming like a giddy little girl because Deakins isn't returning. Fuuuuuu--

Well, Deakins was the one I wanted back the most, after Mendes. So I am mightily disappointed. :(
All we can hope for is another first class cinematographer. I am sure they are on it already. I hope they can get the best there is, because for me Deakins was amazing and I want that high a quality in the next Bond film.

Me too. I think I would have enjoyed Skyfall just a bit more without Newman.

Mendes worked with Deakins on all of his films except two, so they were a real team who understood eachother. Hence it will be intresting to see whom they will choose for Bond 24, it has to be someone who understands Mendes vision.

And as people previously posted, i wonder what the situation with Newman are. Now when we now that everyone aren't a certainty.

We can change the thread's title now to: "Deakins NOT returning - the horror! What now?!" or something maybe not quite so dramatic. ;)

The fact Deankins work on Jarhead, i whas not worried if he return if the Bond 24 style look more close to that movie, QOS or In Time. But i like to see Robert Schaeffer do another movie. Inspecialy iam curious or Schaeffer have les problems with the digital. The best parts of Deankins be scene with house and the scene's in London. But i think Robert Elswit (TMND) have been a better Cinematopgrapher for Macau and second part of Shangai (The Elevator scene!). With TMND in mind also think the scene's in London not have been a problem. Whylen Adrian Bidle have been the best choose for Skyfall, if we look what he did with Twine. Deankins should have been inspyred a bit by Bidle his Devil's Breath. Only reasen why Meheux return for CR is because Bidle past a way (be kind of homage to him.) and his earlier work for GE. The only scene from Skyfall i like to see have been done by Meheux is Pre-title scene.

With my expections for Bond 24 be more closer to QOS style/Quantum Return, i think Meheux fit better then Elswit. Goldeneye in mind and Dennis Gasner (production designer of QOS and Skyfall) is to return also. Also i hope Stuard Baid too (Editor of CR, Skyfall and Vantage Point). Also i expect same second united directer as CR and Skyfall. Sam Mendes look like he is les violence directer then Martin Campbell be for CR. Both directers get same second united directers and difrent DOP. So what wil the movie look like if Mendes get Martin Campbell's Cinematographer and Editor who should have been editor of Die Another Day and QOS. I always keep in mind Baid be uncredit editor of Mi2.

Elswit wil return for Mi5 and i like that, inspecialy because of the footage of Jack Ryan i have seen.

Before Skyfall released, earlier i sugest John Toll. DOP of The Adjustment Bureau, The Last Samurai and more present Iron Man 3.

And Conrad L. Hall can be option if not Robert Schaeffer, Conrad work on Road To Perdition who i see closer to QOS and at the time i expect work on Bond 23/Skyfall and not Deakins. If not him, mabey John Toon who work on ''Sylvia'', a movie with Daniel Craig and more present Sunshine Cleaning (2008) and (what look like a mix of CR/QOS style)..

Now I want to see Angelina's film that Deakin just finished work on: "Unbroken." It sounded rather interesting anyway, but for sure now - with his cinematography - I really want to see it.

Check out the Olympics trailer for it, it screams Deakins.

True and thing is - the replacement can be as good as Deakins, people will moan him. Not a good PR for the next film. On the other hand - its the fanboys/girls, who really go into the matter. The rest, which is the majority won't care or know as long as the film looks good. The are fans, too, but from a larger distance.

Does this mean Bond 24 will still be shot in digital I wonder. I can't see them going back to film now. Not after finally making the switch.
