No room for May in all this rebooting?

I’m skeptical about whether that would work. The film version of Bond – and especially Craig’s Bond – is far too much of a loner, and far too self-sufficient, to have other people around the flat. Might be a good idea for the next re-boot however.

But it would work perfectly because he is a loner.

May would seem a little weird and motherly for the cinematic Bond. It's more likely he would have a love interest in his apartment a la LALD.

Completely agree. A love interest knocking about maybe but an old Scottish housekeeper? Not a good idea IMO.

I think Craig's Bond would be at HER place. I can't see him bringing anyone to his flat, nonetheless some woman he picked up.

I'm not sure to be honest. Craig's Bond is a work in progress. As he grows older and matures further he may go one of two ways. Either he'll lighten up and relax a little more and could conceivably have a love interest introduced to us by being in his flat or maybe not. I guess we'll have to wait and see which direction his character goes in.

Interesting point, 0Brady. Of course, Fleming's Bond changed too - could we ever see Craig's Bond living with a woman for a few months like he did with Tiffany? If anyone's Bond would do it, it would be Craig's (although, like in the books, it would likely just be referenced in a few lines at the start of the next film after the relationship failed).

I always wished they had shown this in the movies at some point, how the relationship breaks.

You can read about it in Pearson's biography of Bond. The best non Fleming Bond book in my opinion. Still, more character movement in the Bond films would be good.

No thanks. I only pay attention to the Bond history FLEMING gives me. He is the word of God for Bond, no other.

Your loss. :) It's a very good book and many of the assignments Bond talks about to Pearson read like Fleming short stories. The book is based on the exact history Fleming gives us but it expands on it. Executed very well too.

If people don't want to read non Fleming Bond books then why do they watch Bond films that aren't based on Fleming books?

Enough about May, who after all is rather boring ("More scrambled eggs, govn'r?")...my hope is that Bond 24 will bring the long-awaited Smithers' origin story.

    Bond talks to Pearson? What?

Anyway, I watch the films (some of which free of Fleming influence) because the books and films are completely separate. They each have things they share, but their own distinct characteristics separate them into their own special category.

Yeah, John Pearson interviews Bond in Bermuda. It's based around the premise that Bond actually exists.

LOL. I'm hanging out for the Pleydell Smith origin story.

I've read it. It's actually not a bad book.

I love it. Read it 5 or 6 times. I really feel like this is Fleming's Bond. Pearson pulls it off wonderfully. I'd always wanted to know more about Bond's background history and if any author can recpature that Fleming essence as Pearson does and has a full understanding of the original, literary character then I don't mind them veering in to this territory. Infact, I welcome it. Higson also understands the real Bond. The only difference is that he also added some adventures that are hard to believe a 13 year old boy would experience. Pearson keeps it much more realistic. Bond is a relatively normal boy with a normal but somewhat turbulent (in terms of his parent's death) childhood in Pearson's book. I like how he makes out that Bond is real too.

The only thing is I'm really struggling to think of an actress who could pull it off. Basically the character and script would be virtually the same as Kincaide but obviously a woman. I'm sure theres someone out there who could nail it but all I can think of is Maggie Smith. Any thoughts?

I was actually just thinking of Maggie Smith as I read that as well. Yes I think she could have provided some great comic relief to the proceedings like Kincaid does. I've heard a lot of people comparing Kincaid to Bruce Wayne's Alfred after they saw the movie and that's unfortunate because it really is a nod to May. I'm guessing the reason a male groundskeeper is used is because of Judi Dench as a female M. In the novels, between male M and female May you basically have Bond's surrogate parents. Now that we have a woman as M, to give the audience that parental dynamic you really need this individual to be more of a paternal figure. Again, if we had a male M starting with Casino Royale I'd have been totally on board with this idea but I really think this is why we didn't get May--it throws out the concept of Bond having substitute paternal and maternal figures.
