?
Let's all be cool and welcoming here.
I just gained more respect for them both. They're right. Those movies deserved some big screen love.
Netfilx paid them (VERY) well. It's too late to regret.
Yeah, I can understand Craig and Johnson being annoyed. The second one could have done well potentially with a significant theatrical release and then released onto Netflix. To be honest the second wasn’t really on my radar when it came out, and I’d definitely have watched it sooner if there had been a bigger theatrical release. So yeah, Craig might be right. The business model is a bit f*cked.
The irony to their "model" is that they're leaving millions on the table when they don't open theatrical windows for crowd pleasers, like the Knives Out series, and yet, they keep raising their monthly subscription prices.
So, yes, I think Craig is right on several levels, this "model" is f*cked.
I don't go to the Cinema as often as I used to, but I would have liked to have seen 'Glass Onion' on the big screen. It's very entertaining, and more cinematic than the first one!
It's been on my list since its release, but I just haven't got around to watching it yet. Might have to give the first one a watch again too!
First official poster. Trailer next week.
It’s never too late to regret (there’s one for the B26 titles thread).
I do kind of wonder what they imagined a Netflix deal would be, considering they’re a TV streaming company.
Me too! The film comes out the night before Thanksgiving. I'll probably go see it on that Friday.
As always this time of year, this'll be one of the few remaining films of the year I'm dying to see that won't play anywhere remotely close to where I live. I hope I'm wrong though. I didn't think Conclave would play nearby either but I'm seeing tickets pop up at several local theaters.
Although I think the Netflix model is insane (small theatrical windows for big crowd pleasers; they then plop the film on our home viewing screens, leaving tens of millions (if not a hundred million), on the table, and then keep raising sub rates), I also do believe that, even the best intentioned artists fall in love with their own genius and work, and they think that they can sway the rules “this time”. I think Craig and Johnson thought that their film was so strong, it would be obvious to the Netflix bosses to go against their own model, and give them a full run in the cinema. And when this wasn’t granted, there was a little temper tantrum that played out.
I say this loving both of these guys, and enjoying both films (although the first is superior, in my mind), but I’ve seen this type of behaviour before, and it usually stems from the artist being blinded by the genius of their work… a little artistic hubris…
Looks beautiful. Craig's character' soul looks shattered in every scene. Desperate. Damn, looking forward to this.
Every scene looks like a painting...
Yes. It looks fantastic. I am really hoping DC gets a little gold statue for this, but I don't think this is going to get enough "play" at the box office. I fear the Academy will ultimately go in the direction of an actor in a more mainstream film. he might not even get a nomination.
Yeah I've not fully assessed how the acting races look just yet but I worry he may just miss getting a nomination. Hopefully he's as good as early reviews have mentioned he is and he at least grabs a nom though.
I think the big question is whether A24 are willing to back another best actor campaign, they've already got Colman Domingo, Adrien Brody and Sebastian Stan. Given the film is out in less than a month and A24 have only just started marketing it, and they've already started marketing The Brutalist and Baby Girl which come out in December and have already received awards noms, many think Queer is DOA and Craig will be this years big snub. I hope not, I really do, but I don't have a lot of faith in A24.
Luca Guadagnino's films don't tend to be heavy hitters financially, and I don't think it's ever the reason why his films are financed/distributed (I'm saying this as someone pretty mixed to even negative towards his work - I'm really not a big fan of his Suspiria or Challengers especially - but I think he's a director who knows what he's doing/what he wants regardless, and I can understand why he's a good artist).
Craig's been snubbed before anyway. I genuinely don't see any reason why he shouldn't have been nominated for Girl WIth The Dragon Tattoo (miles ahead of Brad Pitt or George Clooney in that year in my opinion) or even Knives Out. Hell, I'd argue his performance in SF or even CR were worthy even if they were Bond films (which is pretty much the reason they wouldn't have been considered, and probably isn't a good reason for not considering them, but there you go).
A buddy has already bought our tickets.
Anyone else going in the NY area?
Should be a great evening. Looking forward to it!
