Bond and his helicopters

I forgot where I read this, but somebody pointed out how ever since From Russia With Love, every Bond movie (but one) has used a helicopter. This may be the most useless random fact ever but it's kind of funny pointing out. Some of these are just some instances in the film where there are actually multiple.

From Russia With Love: Helicopter vs Bond
Goldfinger: Searching for Bond and Pussy "No time to be rescued"
Thunderball: Bond and Felix looking for the plane
You Only Live Twice: Little Nellie battle
On Her Majesties Secret Service: Piz Gloria attack
Diamonds Are Forever: Oil rig attack
Live and Let Die: Bond and Solitare escape from poppy fields
The Man With The Golden Gun: None
The Spy Who Loved Me: Bond arrives at navel base
Moonraker: Bond arrives in California
For Your Eyes Only: Death of Blofeld
Octopussy: Bond arrives in India
A View To A Kill: Opening ski chase
The Living Daylights: Necros escapes from MI6 attack
License To Kill: Opening "fly fishing" scene
Goldeneye: Tiger helicopter
Tomorrow Never Dies: bike chase
The World is Not Enough: M arrives at oil pipeline
Die Another Day: Opening scene in Korea
Casino Royale: Bond returns to The Ocean Club
Quantum of Solace: "Target terminated:
Skyfall: Bond arrests Silva

It's not done on purpose but it's an interesting fact I thought I'd share if people were not aware

Very interesting indeed. I had never thought about that but you are absolutely right. Thanks for making the list, by the way.

Needed something to think about on long train rides not a problem :)

Wow, never even realized that either.

Yeah, I think I read this as a trivia fact in the James Bond Car Collection, that only Dr. No and The Man With The Golden Gun didn't feature a helicopter but I never bothered to figure out where they all were.

    Thanks for the list Bondbat!

On topic as per @Samuel001; It is yet another marketing faux pas that the new dvd/blu ray cover of TMWTGG features a distorted explosion with a helicopter flying away...why oh why? false representation methinks.

Is it meant to be the sea plane?

Maybe I exagerrated with the explosion bit (it was from memory) but the helicopter is definitely there.

The barrel rolling car would have been more appropriate. No helicopter in film, no place on cover sleeve.

That is actually really funny. I mean seriously, there are only 2 Bond films with no helicopters and yet there's one on the freaking cover. Very amusing
  • I never really gave it much thought, but it's not something to get up the air about..

It's not a useless trivia item either, as I think it's quite interesting but once again it's simply not something you ever think about, either when viewing, or looking back on the franchise as a whole. The whole Skyfall sequence from last year seemed a bit too much like 'Apocalypse Now', but that must of been their intention

My very favorite would have to be in From Russia With Love and the Connery chase

Not helicopters, but I also noticed in most James Bond releases, there's a speedboat involved or some kind of boat, or, chase across water, or however you want to see it as

Never did notice that! Wow! DN and TMWTGG are sure in the minority on this one.

Good trivia! And the absence in DN and TMWTGG seems to be random because I can't see any explanation.
  • They are a little overused in SP, I think. I'd be fine if the next film had none at all.

I think Bond is only physically seen in a helicopter in about 10 of them.

    TB -looking for plane
Ohmss - attack on piz Gloria
Daf - he arrived by helicopter to the oil rig, but not seen in it?
Tswlm - at the beginning in naval uniform
MR - arriving at Drax' s
    FYEO - PTS
OP - arriving in India. Not seen physically but implied
    LTK - PTS
    GE - tiger
TWINE - arriving at ski field
DAD - after Antonov blows up
CR - arriving at solanges body??
SP - escaping from crater base

Maybe a good idea for an elimination game. Favourites of mine are no doubt FRWL, OHMSS, FYEO and SP:

    and the PTS

This is an interesting finding, not to be merely shrugged off. I think it may have to do with status, as it seems the Brits are more into this form of travel than we are here in the states. I was watching a special about the Crystal Palace football club, and in it, we are shown the managers flying to the stadium by helicopter, with a posh interior that resembled a limo. It really struck me. We don't see that sort of thing over here. We tend to view helicopters purely as utility, for police, hospitals, etc.

CR is the only film since... OP (?) where no aircraft explodes?

An aircraft explodes in OP. The one with Khan in it.

He said "since" OP, which includes OP.

But he said that CR is the only film since OP where NO aircraft explodes. And @Thunderfinger is pointing out that an aircraft DOES explode in OP. So that isn't quite right.

An aircraft explodes in AVTAK - the helicopter in the PTS, the plane that Bond and Kara escape frome explodes - after which he says he knows a good restaurant in Karachi, helicopter in TND pursuing Bond and Wai Lin exploes, helicopters at Zukovsky's caviar factory explode in TWINEs
  • I think all of Brosnan's films featured an exploding aircraft at some point. The one anomaly aside from CR is LTK. There are no exploding aircraft in that film, although Pam's plane did get nicked by a Stinger missile. I also find it an interesting reversal in CR where Bond has to prevent the explosion/bombing of an aircraft.

You can add YOLT to the list as well @w2bond
Bond is seen arriving at the Ninja training school in a helicopter. And also after he's escaped from the exploding plane.
In DAF he arrives by the floating device, which is pushed out of a plane.
TND, taken to Carvers HQ with Wai Lin in a helicopter.

I would call Little Nellie a helicopter as well.

Technically isn't Little Nellie an Autogyro, and works on a different principal
To a Helicopter, as it can't hover for instance. Just a nerdy geek point. ;)

Number of helicopters/aircraft that exploded in the Brosnan era:
GE: 5 (the 3 Migs in Severnaya, Bond's plane to arrive at Trevelyan's lair, the chopper that Onatop is strapped to.
TND: 3 (the fighter jet that chases Bond in the PTS, the Chinese Mig, the chopper that chases Bond/Wai Lin)
TWINE: 8 (the hot air ballon, 4 parahawks, 3 choppers with blades)
DAD: 2 (Bond's chopper, the Antonov)

I must pull my finger out and get my script online, got far too distracted with smaller things like Brexit, but I have included an new attack version of the Osprey for Bond to storm the bad guy's HQ and then escape with the girl. Yes, I know its not a helicopter but neither is Little Nelly so we clearly have some flexibility. :-)

The list misses Bond arriving at Piz Gloria in OHMSS, Wint and Kidd blowing up a helicopter in DAF as does Stromberg in TSWLM.
