5 - The Barry Manilow line followed by Bond putting the glasses back on Penny's nose and her girlish sigh. Slightly irritating I must admit.

4 - The floor wiping guy in the men's room draining too much attention away from Bond.

3 - The World War III line from Felix. Even Terry didn't like it.

2 - The magic carpet ride which, fortunately, they cut out from the film. It shouldn't have been conceived in the first place.

1 - I've never liked Rosita's chest performance. It's not a joke, it's actually used as a serious plot point. Come on, this is weak screenwriting in an otherwise brilliant film.

    1. Bond joining the girl on the boat via parachute at the end of the PTS; looks like a bit from a Roger Moore film.
    2. Felix Leiter's appearance - utterly forgettable
    3. M's desk on the transport plane for the training drop - just too silly
    4. The iced-over lake chase sequence - cartoonish
    5. Playing the cello with a bullet hole in it - did that improve the instrument?

    5. "To Stop a Bomb/To Drop a Bomb." Not sure if it was supposed to be a joke but the lines were bad and delivered badly.

    4. Koskov and Whitaker: Obviously campy stock villains from the Moore Era. It's a shame because both actors are good but were wasted.

    3. Caroline Bliss as Moneypenny. Painfully wooden and given awful lines to boot. Should have replaced here with Penelope Smallbone instead.

    2. Felix and his female assistants. Not necessary or brought anything special to the film. And Barry's Sax cue when the girls follow Bond is just silly. Sorry John, it's down there with the Banjo cue from Goldfinger.

    1. The Cello Case Sled. Really? REALLY? come one. Bond should have packed ski's. I know it's improvisation but it's just as bad as the Firetruck chase in AVTAK.

Oooh, tough one. Before Casino Royale, this is my favourite and what I consider to be the best Bond film ever at this point in time.

5 - Kara plays the cello even after it's got a bullet in it. As a musician, can't help but let it bother me. Really, really minor flaw, though. Kinda shows you how little I have issue with in this film.
4 - The little bits that were leftover for Moore; I really do feel this film was tailored to Dalton, and it is a very serious spy film, but they definitely improved in this respect with LTK. I'd say this is about 5% an eighth Moore film, 95% a first Dalton film.
3 - "Trouble at the airport." "I can't imagine why..."
2 - The Mujahideen soldier firing an RPG sideways. The backblast would've killed at least two of his comrades plus it just looks ridiculous. Again, that's part of the 5% that was meant for Moore.
1 - The movie manages to have the all-time worst Moneypenny AND the worst Felix.

    1. Caroline Bliss. Sorry, just not up to scratch after the wonderful years of service from Lois Maxwell.

    2. The contribution from Leiter and the CIA. Poor John Terry (no not that one) ;-)

    3. The lack of screentime for Whittaker.

    4. I find Koskov just too darn likeable, when he is one of the main antagonists and should be nasty. That's what I want from my Bond villans.

    5. Kara overlooking the fact she's about to fly into a bloody mountain! Almost ranks as bad as SS and that airship.
  • 5. The way Dalton says, "Bond, James Bond"

    4. Kara missing the mountain

    3. Rosika's method of distracting her boss

    2. The block of wood masquerading as Felix

    1. Koskov and Whitaker being impossible to take seriously
  • Posts: 1,817
    5. Bond releasing the shoe instead of brutally throwing Necros
    4. Moneypenny
    3. The Mujahideen arriving completely armored (as they are so "uncivilized" for not knowing how to properly dress for a concert)
    2. Whitaker should've been less comical, more menacing and psycothic (his death was not great neither)
    1. Felix Leiter
#1 Caroline Bliss as Moneypenny. Anyone who took the part had big shoes to fill after Lois Maxwell's departure, but she was a major disappointment, it was maybe a relief she was only featured for a few seconds in the subsequent release, License to Kill

#2 The main adversaries. Necros apart, both Whitaker and Koskov were never threatening and too humorous often enough, to offer any level of intimidation

#3 The 'distraction' of the pipeline worker with Rosika and Bond. Bizarre, if nothing else

#4 Bond calmly handing over his wallet to Leiter's girls (after he sneaks a pair of sunglasses without paying). Gunpoint or not, there was always something about that scene that never really sat right

#5 Poor climax with Bond and Whitaker in Tangiers. Was maybe hoping for a little bit more, but it was too little, too soon, and all over a little too quickly

5 - I loved that, though. It's one of my favourite "Bond, James Bond" introductions, if not my #1 outright. It's just a name to him, he doesn't hold any relish or love for being the man he is, really speaks a lot about Tim's portrayal.

2 - This is the best description of John Terry's Felix ever.

I love it as well. It was unique and actually quite brave considering how the line was portrayed by the other actors before him.

It's much more grounded, too. I mean for god's sake, the man just parachuted out of an exploding jeep. Obviously he's a bit winded and such. I've always found it ridiculous when Moore's in the Citroen in FYEO, being pursued by baddies, and he very calmly and suavely does a whole introduction with Milena. Same goes for the firetruck chase, where he says it TWICE!

5 - Dalton rides the Gibraltar jeep (for real!)

4 - The bomb destroys the bridge, the freedom fighters celebrate, the plane flies over one more time, Barry's thunderous victory music makes it even bigger.

3 - Saunders' death, because here's one ally I hate to lose and one that didn't start out on our sympathy list. Powerful moment.

2 - Bond leaves the safe house meeting. His repressed smile indicates he already thinks that something stinks about Koskov's talk.

1 - On your knees, General. Dalton oozes cool right there.

    5. The Sniper was woman scene.

    4. The Car Chase.

    3. Bond interrogating Pushkin.

    2. The Kitchen fight between Necros and the MI6 agent.

    1. The Pre Title sequence.

My problem with the line reading as that you'd only say "Bond...James Bond" coolly and dramatically, like Connery in Dr. No. You're in a tuxedo, there's an amazingly good looking woman across from you, you're winning at cards, and you're smoking. That's when you'd let "Bond...James Bond" out.

If you're going to say it in the harried way that Dalton did, you'd probably just say something like, "James" (like Connery did in Dr. No and From Russia With Love) or "I work for the British government."

But thank you for the compliment regarding the non-portrayal of Felix.

    Next list:

    5. Fight in the kitchen.

    4. Bond shooting the gun and his conversation with Saunders.

    3. The final scene, Bond in Kara's dressing room.

    2. Bond in Pushkin's room

    1. "He got the boot"/plane fight
  • edited August 2013 Posts: 6,396
    1. TD. Quite simply brilliant as Bond
    2. The fight on the cargo net with Necros. Some of the best stunt work in the series.
    3. The "defection" of Koskov and his subsequent "abduction" by the KGB from the safe house. Pure Fleming.
    4. John Barry. His last score for a Bond film and he goes out in style.
    5. Bond interrogating Pushkin "If I trusted Koskov we wouldn't be talking"

Honourable mention: the scene in which Saunders is killed and the anger in Bond's face when he see the balloon with "smiert spionim"

#1 Timothy Dalton as James Bond. Seeing him as Bond, in action as Bond, speaking as Bond. All those essential Fleming qualities

#2 The Green Four / Necros fight at the Blaydon safe house

#3 The fight on the plane between Necros and Bond

#4 The pre credits sequence in Gibraltar. Highly enjoyable

#5 Interrogation of General Pushkin in Tangiers. "You should of brought lillies" etc

    Can I do ten again?

10: Timothy Dalton's performance as Bond. Save for his return in LTK and (possibly, not likely) Craig in CR, this is the best performance in the series.
9: The V8 Vantage chase. Brilliant from start to finish.
8: John Rhys-Davies as Pushkin. What a magnificent actor.
7: John Barry's score. A contender for his best and, ergo, the best in the entire series.
6: The countryside retreat attack. Thrilling action sequence.
5: Bond questions M as to having Pushkin as the target, reluctant to take on the mission because of his doubts. Very Flemingesque.
4: Cargo plane fight. By god, had me on the edge of my seat first time I watched it.
3: The defection sequence. Lovely adaptation of the short story and possibly the best use of Fleming material ever.
2: The interrogation scene. As mentioned before by many people, this was the defining scene in terms of acting ability in the entire series.
1: The PTS, especially that first shot of Dalton as 004 falls from the cliff. Best action-based PTS in the entire series.

    001) Dalton's debut performance as Bond.
    002) The Dalton/d'Abo chemistry makes for the most believable Bond/Bond girl couple in the series.
    003) The intelligently written screenplay that faithfully adapted Fleming's short story and expanded on it well to make for a 2 hour film. A very refreshing script after the stale and tired GF recycling Wilson and Maibaum created for AVTAK.
    004) John Barry's final score in the series and one of his best.
    005) All the action scenes(the Ice Chase/Bond vs. Necros on the plane, the PTS)

Too many more to mention in the best Bond films made since TB.
    1. Bond "missing" the shot during the defection
    2. Necros's raid to "reclaim" Koskov
    3. Bond's reluctance to assassinate Pushkin
    4. PTS (except for the final moment)
    5. The fantastic cargo plane battle between Bond & Necros

That's a good observation but I think the whole point of it was to show just how different this new Bond was from the previous actors, Moore in particular. I guess you just had to be there. I can remember people making a big deal about it at the time.

    5) Necros abducts Koskov from the safe house - The exploding milk bottles are a little on the silly side but a lot of great action here nonetheless. The kitchen fight is certainly a highlight.

    4) Saunders' death - After starting off on the wrong foot it was nice to see Bond and Saunders learn to appreciate each other. This made his death especially tragic and Dalton did a good job of displaying Bond's grief and anger over the situation.

    3) Bond and Necros plane fight - I remember being blown away by this as an eight year old seeing it on the big screen for the first time. It still holds up well today.

    2) The PTS - A wonderful introduction to Dalton and just a great action sequence in it's own right. Arguably the best PTS in the whole series. It's certainly in the top five.

    1) Assassinating the assassin - My favorite Dalton moment and a wonderful Fleming moment as well. From the Bond and Saunders banter to seeing Dalton close up his suit coat and holding the gun. There's just something mysterious behind those eyes.

    5. M and Bond meeting "It was instinct"
    4. Bond following Kara in the tram. One of the most pure espionnage moments in the series.
    3. The briefing with M, the Minister, Koskov and Bond.
    2. "I take this is not a social call, 007" The killing Pushkin scene.
    1. "Why me?" The whole killing the sniper mission. Fleming and Dalton in all their greatness.

5 - Sanchez beats Lupe. It's bold but also slightly misplaced in a Bond film IMO.

4 - Pam nervously pretends to be a capable harbour pilot.

3 - Bond involved in a bar brawl.

2 - Q performs rogue field work with Bond.

1 - Pam 'seduces' Professor Butcher.
  • edited August 2013 Posts: 6,396
    1. Michael Kamen over using the Bond theme.

    2. The violent tone of the film causing the BBFC to slap a 15 certificate on it here in the UK, meaning I was unable to watch it in the cinema (I was only 13 at the time).

    3. No Pinewood Studio involvement as the production was forced to move from the UK to Mexico City due to a change in tax laws. Damn our government ;-)

    4. The bar room brawl. Just never felt right seeing a scene of that nature in a Bond.

    5. Professor Joe. His character seemed out of place for this film.

Ammendment: I would also like to add the winking fish to this list.

    5. Bar fight.
    4. The Ninja's.
    3. The winking fish.
    2. Truman Lodge.
    1. Felix being chipper and happy in the ending despite losing some limbs and his wife.

I'd forgotten about that. Who's bloody idea what is to include that?

    4. Some of the ridiculous line readings: "Relax, Felix," "We gave her a nice honeymooooooooooooooooooon," "I love James, so much"

    3. Winking Fish.

    2. Cheerful Felix.

    1. Pam's schizophrenic writing.

Honorable mention: The occasional non-Bond vibe. I really can't describe it, and it doesn't ruin the movie, it just feels weird sometimes.
