  • I've honestly never understood why so many people hate Mathis's death so much. This may earn me a second rebuke, but I just don't get it.

For my part, I don't hate Mathis' death, just sad to see him go. As a scene, it's one of the best in the film. I just really liked him and wanted more.

That's how I feel, Thunderball. I wanted him in one more film.

    2. The editing, especially in the beginning. The car chase looks like an epileptic fit, and the needless cuts away during the interrogation and chase are infuriating.

Oh dear Soundofthesinners expect a rebuke in the post for trivialising a serious illness:
Really? Why do people have to always put it like that? Despite the misdiagnoses, ADHD is a genuine disorder suffered by some. This statement always comes across as mocking to me.

Wizard, you know I've nothing but the utmost respect for you. Must I be laughed at? It's a comment I hear every five seconds with QoS, "the ADHD crowd". Just sounds very demeaning to me.
  • ^So you're cool with me calling it an epileptic fit, then? ;)

    1. Boat Chase. The editing and the techno music.
    2. The Dogfight
    3. Fields let Elvis fall from the stairs
    4. End in the hotel
    5. No Gunbarrel at the start

Yes the movie is to short and not everthing is very well edit, but this are not realy moments.
  • Only five ?

#1 The Keys and White "music" intro

#2 The "plot" I.E. Villain wants to put a higher price on water percentage in Bolivia

#3 The nauseating pace throughout, especially the car chase at the very beginning

#4 Poor use of characters, and development

#5 Gunbarrel at the end of the movie

Oh my... gonna catch up here with just one for each...

    Worst about CR

Mathis and his poker commentary. Grrrrrr

    Best about CR

    Eva Green's bosom

    Worst about QoS
I liked that film more than most so I'll just say, it's a bit messy. Can't put my finger on what exactly doesn't work because I liked all the elements. That said, reading so many negatives about it makes me think I should see it again. And SF, since I didn't like that one at all and you all seem to love it.

But that's different. You're describing what it looks like to you, and admittedly the camerawork does seem like it was done by someone mid-seizure. The other comment refers to the "ADHD crowd" and it's a comment I see very, very often. I just take offense to the connotations of it is all.

I call it Forster vision. It's so fast it will take your hair off, like it did his. :))

#1.) Bond vs. Slate. One of my favorite fights in the entire series.

2.) Bond and Mitchell chase through Italy.

    3.) The Bregenz Opera scene.

4.) Bond meeting Mathis again at his Italian villa.

5.) Bond and Felix in the bar.

5 - The air plane meeting of Greene and the CIA. I love Beam and Leiter in these moments. Well acted, with a touch of tension in the air.

4 - It's one very short shot, but I love it: when Bond talks Camille through her revenge plot, we see a dark shot of an unsuspecting Medrano's back sitting relaxed on the balcony of the dune hotel. It's a blink-and-miss moment, but I've always taken to it.

3 - Bond driving around in Bregenz. I just love the style Forster applied here. Arnold's slightly elusive tunes, the fountain, the quiet yet ominous atmosphere... I only wish there had been more of this.

2 - Air plane scene: Bond is drunk, Mathis' talk makes perfect sense, Arnold's music works.

1 - Final scene: true magic. More human emotion in those two minutes with Yussef and Corine than in the rest of the movie, with perhaps the exception of the plane scene. It's quiet, well acted, powerful. Slightly reminiscent of the moment when Jason Bourne goes to visit the daughter of his first victims, but if you must steal, you might as well steal from the best.

@DarthDimi, #4 is a great moment. It's why I hate making lists, because I always leave too much out and I hate deciding what my favorites are. Just the entire balcony scene is great, and that quick, one-second shot is lovely.

    5. The two scenes with the "inside man" cue: Bond arriving at London and Camille walking away
    4. The Bolivian taximan talking like crazy and Mathis trying to shut him, a little old-time campyness
    3. The opera scene
    2. Bond and Mathis on the air plane
    1. Bond at Talamone

    Honorable mentions:
    - Bond vs. Slate (of course)
    - Bond leaving Camille who is "sea sick" (one of the few moments with the Bond theme)

    1. Tosca Scene.
    2. Bond Fighting Slate.
    3. Bond and Mathis sharing a moment on the plane.
    4. PTS.
    5. Bond sadistically giving Greene a can of motor oil to be his last beverage on Earth.
    7. Final scene.
    8. DC3 Scene.
    9. Boat Chase.
    10. Bond stealing a Tuxedo.

    1. Night at the opera...

    2. Bond convinces Mathis to accompany him to Bolivia

    3. The fight with an axe wielding Greene as the hotel explodes around them with Bond ultimately abandoning him in the desert with a can of motor oil.

    4. Leiter meets Bond at the bar "James. Move your ass". Jeffrey Wright not in this film anywhere near enough.

    5. Bond confronts Yusuf and finally finds his solace.

Tosca- not the best place to meet.
Any moment with Mathis. "Forgive her. Forgive yourself."
Bond vs. Slate. Surprisingly, Bond wins.
    Touring Siena by foot.
An MI6 agent and a CIA agent walk into a bar.

    Honourable mentions:

PTS. Where's Mr. White? "He got the boot."
    DC in the DC.
Camille, take a deep breath before you kill someone.
    Greene gets his just deserts.
    From Kazan with Solace.

@Creasy47, yes, it is, isn't it? I rather like most of the stuff that goes on in that hotel. Here's the thing: there are certain things in QOS that I absolutely love. I'm angry with the film for having a couple of stinkers in it, for not staying with its occasional greatness.

  • 1. "Tosca isn't for everyone" - I adore the whole Bregenz opera scene.

    2. Bond hates Fields' hotel choice, so checks into a much better one still using the 'teachers on a sabbatical' cover. It's cool, funny and totally Bond.

    3. Mathis' death particularly the "Do we forgive each other?" line. Very poignant moment

    4. Bond vs Slate - one of the best hand-to-hand combats in the franchise

    5. Bond meets Leiter at the bar. The coolness of Leiter chugging his beer whilst the Feds go after Bond makes me smile every time

    1. Opera scene/Tux
    2. I Never Left/crawl end Crawl
    3. Horse - Libery scene/The Empty Chair/Inside Man aka return to London
    4. Airport scene with Mathis and Fields
    5. Bond visit Mathis/Extra Bondgirl
    6. Mathis and Bond in Airplane
    7. Wrong Hotel joke
    8. Your Prison be in there
    9. Opening scene (Out of the tunnel, Police talking, Time to Go / Maintitle)
    10. Bond and Camile walking in the desert

And as i repeat already enough: Production design and cinematopgraphy. Also moost music is better then CR.

5: "We are teachers on sabbatical. And we have just won the lottery."

4: Bond fights Slate. One of the best fights in the series and the bad editing actually kind of... works here? maybe it's because it's all in one room so the camera pretty much stays in one spot?

3: "I reckon you'll make it 20 miles before you consider drinking that."

    2: "Tosca isn't for everyone."

1: Bond and Mathis share a moment on the plane. I was very moved by this scene and it's at the same level of quality as much of Casino Royale.

    5. Bond handing an unconscious Camille over to someone saying that she's seasick..

    4. The Opera scene.

    3. Bond's fight with Slate.

    2. At the end of the film, with Bond, Yusef and Corrine.

    1. A rare tender moment - When Camille tells Bond about what Medrano did to her family. Olga's a very pretty girl, but i thought she looked particularly lovley in that scene, and played it very well..

    5. Bond interjecting into Quatum's "meeting" at the opera.
    4. Leiter and Bond at the bar: "James...move your ass."
    3. Mathis' death scene. "Forgive her. Forgive yourself."
    2. The scene in the cave between Bond and Camille as she explains what Medrano did to her and her family, and the need for revenge that fuels both of them.
    1. Bond and Mathis interplay, specifically on the plane as Bond drinks his Vesper.
  • #1 Craig as Bond. Not nearly as good as Connery and Dalton in the part, but a damn fine improvement on Brosnan before him, and brought some much needed hard edged reality back to the series, and another fine performance

#2 The treachery of Mitchell and subsequent chase through Siena

#3 Fight with Edmund Slate in Haiti

#4 Tosca opera sequence in Austria

#5 Bond and Greene in the desert with the motor oil

    5 - Silva's disfigured CGI face: I don't really like the effect.

4 - Not sure about Séverine's death when Bond is clearly in good enough shape to escape a few moments later.

3 - I don't need everything explained but a small hint as to how Silva got away from MI6 imprisonment might have helped.

2 - Bond surviving certain hypothermia is a pretty big conceit to give the filmmakers.

1 - The computer key trick Bond and Q pull off is a pretty hard sell. What are the odds you actually make that happen?

    1. Tanner taking a swig on office hours! (I didn't mind most of the product placement, but this one was bad.)

    2. Silva's magic escape years in the planning. (A bit of a stretch but Q makes it fun.)

    3. Bond's magic glove in Shanghai! (Is it on or is it off?)

    4. Patrice being one of 3 men in the entire government listing to use depleted uranium bullets. (Why just 3 random people?)

    5. VW Beetles Ma'am. (Terrible line. Product placement at it's worst.)

Good one, @Murdock! Can't believe I actually forgot about this. It's always bothered me.
