Came to this a bit late:

    SF Worst 5:

    1. No GB - it's the 50th anniversary for FFS!! As I sat in my seat at the premiere I thought 'this is going to be amazing' and then.... just crushing disappointment. I missed the first 30 seconds of the film as I was seething too much. As for Mendes' pathetic justification? Just feeble frankly. All well and good to give a director control but why aren't Babs and MGW saying 'we really don't give a shit about your arty shot - put the GB at the start or walk'.
And even when we do get it at the end its still shit.

    2. Where are the stunts? At the risk of repeating myself - its the 50th FFS! A decent enough PTS but after that what? A couple of fights, Bond sliding down an escalator, a tube train crashes and two gun fights. Apart from the stuff with the digger where is anything to make you go 'wow'? Where is a stunt or sequence on a par with the ski jump, the TLD plane fight, the bungee jump or the tank chase? Shouldn't all the stops have been pulled out for the 50th?

    3. Silva's plan - utter bolllocks. OK so he's a genius who can hack all the door locks, M's e-mails so he knows she will be in the select committee and knows exactly when the tube will be coming so he can blow it off the rails. I can live with this for the sake of suspension of disbelief. But I can't take him putting himself in MI6's hands and somehow knowing that Q will hack his laptop while he is still in an escapable cell not after he is banged up in Belmarsh. Or that the guard is so inept he will let Silva get the jump on him despite him being armed, presumably a cut above your standard prison officer and being about 15 feet from the cell door.
I'll throw Bond's clairvoyant solving of the Countdown conundrum as well when the scene is allegedly two of the best computer programmers in the world going head to head. The whole sequence is fine if you switch your brain off but I thought we'd moved on from the days of MR? It just asks to you to believe that Silva is able to predict far too many variables to be credible.

    4. The DB5 - utterly nonsensical timeline and logic just to give the fanboys a hard on.

    5. Naomie Harris's delivery - sounds like she's reading her lines off cue cards. Having only learned to read that morning. She sounds more like a linguaphone course in Received Pronunciation that students should repeat back than someone actually saying the lines with any feeling. I think even Tanya Roberts might be better.

    SF Best 5

    1. A washed up Bond popping pills in the mirror - something Fleming' character would do. Doesn't even have a drink of water which is entirely faithful.

    2. The scene with the psychologist - superbly played by Craig.

    3. Silva's introduction - great scene beautifully played by both actors. It's a shame then that Silva subsequently only had two more brief scenes of any substance.

    4. Everything from when they get to Scotland onwards - ok I've already slagged off the DB5 above but if it has to be there then at least it's used well. Great somber build up and sense of impending doom with some nice acting by Craig, Dench and Finney and then it all kicks off very nicely. OK after Bond leaves the DB5 and goes back in the house its a pretty standard shoot out but that's a minor gripe. The photography of the barren Scottish landscspe and the DB5 is fantastic as well.

    5. The Tennyson scene - great combination of drama, action and music and as Bond runs down Whitehall doggedly determined to save the day the sense of pride in being British (that is not something you feel very often these days) makes you want to sing Land of Hope and Glory!
Rising from the depressing quagmire of political correctness, health and safety, social wokers, diversity and inclusivity Bond breathes life into that extant flame of British spirit upon which an Empire was founded. Stirring stuff.
  • 5. Bond removing the bullet, sans pain relievers.

    4. Bond's entrance into the casino and conversation Severine. Brilliantly shot and acted.

    3. The PTS, except when Naomi Harris's mouth is open/Naomi Harris is shooting Bond.

    2. M in parliament, especially her recital of Tennyson

    1. Silva's entrance. Sublime.

    1. Silva's Entrance.
    2. Jellyfish fight.
    3. PTS.
    4. Climax at Skyfall.
    5. Excellent reintroductions to Moneypenny and Q.
  • Going to be quick this night, but as I see it -

#1 Craig as James Bond. Say it each time, but the best since Dalton, and he pulls a good Bond adventure, into almost a great one, by simply playing the lead part

#2 The finale at the Skyfall mansion in Scotland (not the chapel ending - that was lame)

#3 Race through the London subway. Ok some parts were absurd, such as how the cars interior lights remained on after losing electric from the track and other minor disputes, but it was a decent sequence that kept the interest

#4 Daniel Kleinman's design intro. One of the very best in recent releases

#5 When Bond is asked at the gallery, what do you see - "A bloody big ship". Don't know why, but warranted a mention

    5. The title credits. Just wonderfully done.

    4. The PTS. Exciting and almost too well-paced.

    3. Bond shows up in M's home. A wonderful callback to CR, and superbly acted.

    2. Silva's introduction. Smashing.

    1. The entire sequence inside the casino. Perfectly shot, directed, and acted.

Honorable mention: "Welcome to Scotland" is the best Bond line in YEARS.
  • Best SF moments:

    1. Shanghai fight- superb cinematography and lighting
    2. Bond meeting, flirting and making deal with Severine in the casino. good acting and Berenice was seductive
    3. Eve shaving Bond-- Nice sensual scene without nudity. Say everything bout Harris dialogue but she delivered here.
    4. Courthouse scene- everything was great from the music, to Tennyson lines, to Bond's arrival and to Silva's expression.
    5. Bond "returning from the death" and showing up in M's place- nice acting. We got a good view of the personal relationship between M and Bond.

It's hard for me to think about the worst in SF because it's in my top 4 Bond films.

4 - The line delivery: natural, classy, brilliant!

3 - The voice: deep enough, not too deep, sexy and warm

2 - The energy: the man meant it when he punched, knocked and hit.

1 - Connery could mix elegance with arrogance extremely well.

    The name's Connery. Sean Connery.

    1) His absolute sense of being comfortable in his own skin and being his own person; his confidence

    2) His intelligence, that shines through in his Bond

    3) His charm - and that includes his voice and natural magnetism

    4) His physicality - the way he moves, holds himself, fights, and kisses a woman

    5) He is deadly when he needs to be; his threats feel real

I do hope so. :-) I really can't come up with complaints about the man. Just look at his introduction in DN. End of discussion.

1: The personality. Connery is the epitome of coolness.

    2: The wit.

3: He knew how to fit into a suit and a tux.

4: The physicality. Very good fight scenes.

5: The way he says the line to end all movie lines.
  • #1 The seriousness. A serious Bond is a good Bond, and that is why Dalton and Craig have been so successful. You watch Dr No and From Russia With Love - there's minimum nonsense, just straight faced and hard edged Bond and putting on a fine show. No Moore-esque humor or big top antics, just providing a great presentation of the Fleming character

#2 The looks. Other than Dalton, easily the most that resembles what the Fleming creation should be. You watch Connery up until 1965 and you think to yourself - this truly is what Bond should resemble

#3 Being cold or ruthless, even to those he holds dear. One such example would be with Romanova on the train in From Russia With Love after Kerim Bey has been killed

#4 Smoking a cigarette. At the casino tables in Dr No - could anyone have done it better ?

#5 Being the second best of all the actors to have played the role to have been closest to the actual Ian Fleming creation

5 - His posture: Lazenby looks quite impressive.

4 - His punches: Lazenby's blows almost hurt when watching him give them.

3 - His emotional moments: wooden? I disagree. Talent or not, I feel his anger, sadness and fear.

2 - His jokes. This may be slightly controversial but I love the way Lazenby pulls off his jokes. His timing is slightly off and perhaps that adds a certain freshness to them. ;-)

1 - Wearing a tux. Each time I see Lazenby in that tux, I'm jealous of the man. Jealous I tell you!
  • Best things about Connery:

    5. The voishe. It hash shertainly gone down in hishtory.

    4. The fishticuffsh. Not quite ash good as hish shucsheshors, but hish fightsh with Grant and Franksh shpeak for themshelvesh.

    Best things about the Lazenator:

    4. The sexuality. He is believable with the ladies in Piz Gloria as well as Tracy.

    3. The kilt. Kilts are good.

    2. The fisticuffs. The strongest in the series.

    1. The romance, which he is somehow able to pull off. I still don't know how he nailed the proposal and death scenes, but he did.

    Lazenby:

    5. His expressions. He knows how to show love, anger and fear well in OHMSS.
    4. He can wear clothes pretty well.
    3. His chemistry with his fellow co-stars.
    2. Him making a gadget in the field to open the Piz Gloria doors.
    1. His fisticuffs. He is even more brutal than Craig in a fight.

5 good things about Lazenby as Bond? Uhhh ... well, no I can't do it. I didn't find him to be James Bond at all. But I'll let RetroKitty come up with about 20 instead. ;)

    My only 2 would be:

    1) He fights like he knows what he is doing (because he does)
    2) He is good looking

(I could stretch it if I include "looks okay in a kilt" things like that)
  • edited October 2013 Posts: 418
    5. He looked good on Ski's.

    4. I thought he was good at showing his emotional side..

    3. The Kilt.

    2. He was particularly good in the fight scenes.

    1. Not sure if it was just a rumour or not, but i heard that he and Diana Rigg didn't get on during filming the love scenes. True or not, i thought that they had great on screen chemistry together..
5: The looks. I'd argue he was the best looking Bond of them all. Tough competition with Dalton and Brosnan though, but Laz wins it in the end.

4: The personality, much more in line with Fleming than Connery was.

3: The chemistry between him and Rigg. From what I hear he was very fond of her while she didn't favour him, so perhaps this is more owed to her than to him, but nonetheless they are, tied with Craig/Green, the best couple in the series.

2: His emotional range and acting ability which are both extremely underrated. "This department owes her a debt. She saved my life." is one of the best scenes in the series. Not to mention Tracy's death.

1: Lazenby was the best action Bond, and that is a fact. He had all the training and it translated onto the screen with some amazing set pieces. Had he done the films at a later time, he'd have been allowed to - and able to - do all of the stunts. Except some of the more complex skiing.

    2. His one liners. You gotta love em.
    3. His tough side. (Even though it's rare, his tough moments were good.)
    4. His retorts to the villains.

5 - The sweetness. Particularly towards the final entries in his 007 career, I find Moore a soothing presence. I love that man.

4 - The acting skills. Moore himself may strenuously deny this but I find him to be a very good actor. It's a joy to watch him play well against almost every other actor and actress that came his way in the Bond films.

3 - His comic timing. While I disagree that Moore is the 'funny' Bond, I believe his comic timing to be spot-on!

2 - His voice and accent. Moore has a beautiful voice and a beautiful pronunciation. I love to hear him talk.

1 - His endurance. People call him 'old'. I disagree. I think Moore's age was never that big an issue. Even in AVTAK, worse things can be found than Moore's 57 - 58 years.
