A wild film with some great scenes but with some odd scenes as well.
The storyline is not the best but worth seeing.
7/10
one of the best of the post Guy Ritchie generation of British Gangster movies
Ray Winston and Ian McShane are in top form and Ben Kingsley's performance is like a boulder bouncing down a cliff and landing in your swimming pool
Pepe le Moco (1936)
one of the classic crime fiction films ever made and a fantastic time capsule containing the distilled exotic ambience of French colonial Algiers
like many French movie stars, Jean Gabin is no oil painting, but he does have a certain energy and charisma
and he needs to in order to avoid being upstaged by the colourful menagerie supporting players who surround him
wanted by the French authorities, master criminal Pepe le Moco and his gang take refuge in the seamy labyrinth of the Algiers Casbah, where the police can never quite catch up with them, but slowly his sanctuary becomes his prison...
meanwhile the wily local inspector bides his time until a woman provides the flashpoint that could prove to be Pepe's undoing
if you have enjoyed the feel of Casablanca you may well fall in love with this one

It was on TV last night. I really shouldn't have watched as I went to bed at 11:30 and it wasn't worth it. It's mildly funny, the story is of a highly dysfunctional family who doesn't know it, who's on the verge of collapse, take their young daughter to the Little Miss Sunshine in California. Basically a road trip movie, with mediocre acting and well not a whole lot of funny stuff. Steve Carell is completely wasted in this flick, so is everyone else. A generous 7/10 rounded up from 6.5 really.
Interesting indea, but the film never felt like it reached it's full potential. It just comes of as... well... dull, I guess.

The Third Man (1949) - quality from start to finish. Not a second wasted. Brilliant moments, shots and touches. Quite simply zither-tastic.
Cries And Whispers (1972) - an emotionally gruelling watch, but then perhaps that's the point. Utterly absorbing and truly beautiful to look at. And, of course, Liv Ullman, mmmm...
Barbarella (1968) - bonkers but (in its way) brilliant psychedelic, sci-fi bunkum. As iconic as Bond, as daft, corny and raunchy as Russ Meyer. Almost.
The Man With One Red Shoe (1985) charming, twisty-turny espionage hokum with a pre-today's-Jimmy-Stewart Tom Hanks in likeable rom-com hero mode
The Hole (2001) - silly but kind of entertaining teen thriller in which Thora Birch impresses and Keira Knightley flashes her puppies. That's about all that needs to be said. Apart from the fact my friend went to school with its writer.
Marley & Me (2008) - surprisingly watchable canine-driven modern-Hollywood family-dram-com. Mind you, Owen Wilson's watchable in almost anything.

That's about an obious title as Snakes On A Plane. Wabeck takes an early lead role as Grant Henry, author by day, sex mad jewel theif by night. He's like a Milk Tray Man, but with an overactive libido (not surprising really, as Warbeck actually was one of the Milk Tray Men). Henry preys on wealthy attractive women, stealing their jewels then having his way with them before escaping into the night. The woman are apparantly only too glad of the attention, as the next morning they give the police his description as everything from a one-armed italian midget to a 6 ft 6 russian with a hare lip. It's very much a film of it's time, from the hair and sideburns to the er... welcome mats.

Jennifer Aniston was almost unrecognisable with all the work done to her face (and her goody-goody character made Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz seem more like the wicked witch). Aaaaand I find Owen Wilson unwatchable in almost anything. :-D
But that's just grumpy old me.....and I applaud your 5/5 movies. Great selection. :-bd
The third installment of the OSS 117 box set, making it the 5th movie of OSS 117 after two "unofficial" and the first two I've already posted about starring Kerwin Matthews, director André Hunebelle decides to take a different route. The franchise had been quite successful in France up to that point, but Kerwin Matthews' financial demands were too high for the non-American production.
Much like EON would end up doing 4 years later, Hunebelle decided to replace his star not with American actors established in Paris, but with an unknown Australian non-actor (ring any bells? ;) ) Indeed, the Czech born Austrian actor, Frederick Stafford had been living in Australia and taken the Australian nationality before being discovered by Hunebelle while on vacation. Some of you may remember him from a movie shot later in his career with a certain Alfred Hitchcock, Topaz.
Set in Brazil many years prior to Moonraker, Bond fans will recognize the same waterfalls, and cable cars later used in Bond. This is by far the best of the original OSS 117 movie, after 3 trials, Hunebelle mastered all the tricks needed. Granted, it is nowhere near the quality that Bond had reached in 1965 with Goldfinger and Thunderball, but Furia a Bahia has the same great exotic locations, impressive villain's lair, intensity, villains and ladies as the Bond franchise. This movie looks fantastic, and I can honestly say that it is superior or at least greatly rivals Bond's initial outing in all aspects.
The story is very Bond-ish / OSS-ish, as OSS is sent in Brazil to investigate the assassination of multiple agents and important men in kamikaze-like grenade suicide killings. Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath being a veteran quickly recognizes when being tailed and identifies a lovely femme fatale, trying to pass herself as OSS' contact's secretary, Consuela Moroni (Perrette Pradier).
OSS will later join up with the real Consuela Moroni, who will be murdered by thugs trying to prevent OSS' discovery that the kamikaze killers were under the effect of drugs. OSS will be able to reach this conclusion with the help of the lovely Anna-Maria Sulza (Mylène Demongeot) and her brother who happen to have connections in the Bahia area.
OSS finally ends up in the wild, discovering a plot to take over the world using a drug which can turn the common person into a mindless drone ready to take orders. With the help of his friends, Hubert manages to save the girl and foil the villain's plans.
Stafford, much like Lazenby was, delivers a decent performance but lacked acting skills. He certainly made it up with his great build and believability in action sequences, which I must admit, are considerable and exciting in this movie but very much choreographed and dated. The leading lady, Mylène Demongeot was constantly over-acting but made it up by her great personality and chemistry with Stafford.
A very solid effort, I'll give this one a 8/10
Very funny film . 8.5/10
- Very, Very entertaining and touching film...
Got to see it last night, and i never expected it to be as good as it was, simply amazing.
Now that Harry Potter is officially over, part of me has ended.
- Harry Potter has been with me for as long as i can remember :'(
An honest: 10/10
Being occupied with Sous le Signe de Monte Cristo, director André Hunebelle had to give the reigns of the OSS Franchise to fellow director Michel Boisrond, specialist in comedies. To ensure that the movie would still follow the mold of his predecessors Hunebelle managed to convince a certain Terrance Young to participate in the movie adaptation of the OSS novel! Many consider this one to be the best OSS movie, indeed one year before James Bond came to Tokyo, Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath with the involvement of Terrance Young was already here.
Frederick Stafford looked much better in his second performance as OSS, much more confidant and at ease, and he had a much better performance delivering his lines as well. The Bond enthusiasts would recognize elements which would make their way in YOLT the next year, such as the massage place where OSS received a massage by a Japanese agent, a fight between OSS and a heavy going through the paper walls, the use of helicopters, and one would have to assume Terrance Young's personal touch, a boat hidden inside a much larger yacht.
Stafford had the chance to be sharing the spotlight with the best leading lady yet, Marina Vlady delivering an excellent performance as the blackmailed American living in Tokyo, Eva Wilson.
The story was again very formulaic, OSS was sent to Tokyo to investigate the the mysterious bombing of an American station. Meeting with the chief officer in Tokyo, Babcock, they determined that one of their employees had leaked secret coordinates about the station. Eva Wilson explained that she had been blackmailed into doing so by a Japanese man who had likely drugged her and taken pictures of her and threatened to show her husband.
OSS decides to use Miss Wilson to lure the villains into contacting her again. This time though she would be using a wire. However, much to OSS' surprise, Miss Wilson was filmed taking her microphone off on her own before climbing into a car with menacing Japanese men and had no idea the Americans were filming her. After meeting her husband John Wilson and having him tailed, it became clear to OSS that it was John Wilson who was using his wife to get information when a Japanese agent following John Wilson turned up shot.
OSS had to ask Eva to bring a transmitter on board the villains's yacht to transmit signal and allow the Americans to find their next target. Young seems to have brought pieces of Thunderball to OSS!
I found this entry quite enjoyable but not quite as good as the prior entry.
I'll give this one a solid 7/10
*RIP Home Alones old man Marley*
After 2 "unofficial" and 4 official OSS 117 movies, a third unofficial movie is made without proper licensing, therefore the adaptation of Cinq Gars pour Singapour is made in 1967 without OSS 117, Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath. Director André Hunebelle decides that he can no longer wait for Frederick Stafford who's career has taken off in Italy, and decides to cast a 3rd OSS 117 actor. This time though, he dreams of taking his project to the US and earn a greater piece of pie. He decides to cast an American as OSS 117, and shoot the film entirely in English and to dub it for the French audience.
Bond fans will be surprised to learn that it was actor John Gavin, the same who would later be cast as James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever, before Connery was lured back. But it wasn't only Gavin who would later be a part of Bond's history, indeed, as main villain, well established International actor Curd Jürgens was cast, the same who would later play Karl Stromberg in TSWLM.
Robert Hossein who portrayed Dr. Sinn in Banco à Bangkok pour OSS 117 (1964) returns to portray yet another doctor and minor villain. And to my surprise, the movie had yet another Bond connection, and what a delight it was!
Sadly the lovely Luciana Paluzzi portrays only a minor character, a doctor held captive by the Major (Jürgens) who injects recruited killers with a virus which will kill them within 24h unless they receive the antidote 3 consecutive days. The story in this one is a very different affair, OSS has changed his face, a plastic surgeon has given him the looks of a known killer who has been secretly killed by the American services. OSS now taking place of the killer is "captured" and taken into custody. This is an elaborate trap for the "Organization", a secret group who organizes coups and assassinations to free him and request his services. OSS is indeed brought to the Major who explains that he must kill a man.
Margaret Lee is rather forgettable as the main girl, the daughter of the man asking the "Organization" to kill his friend because the friend is about to reach a peace treaty between two nations which will cost him dearly.
As I understand, the movie was a disappointment with the French audience who was very unhappy with director Claude Foucaud who worked the entire film for André Hunebelle, to keep the English track and use subtitles for the first act of the film held in America. Due to the declining ratings, André Hunebelle decided to sell the rights of OSS to Pierre Kalfon who made a spoof, OSS prend des Vacances (1969) before the OSS made its way on the small screen in 1971 before disappearing until the latest spoofs were made in 2006 with new star Jean Dujardin.
Gavin still managed an interesting performance, and after seeing this I have no doubt that he could have managed the role of Bond for a short period, perhaps 2-3 movies. So to anyone who wants to see him in a spy role and try to figure out what DAF could have been, this is the movie to look for!
7/10
Connery and Wesley Snipes star in this enjoyable crime mystery action film.

Stupid comedy which is pretty average.

And Alan Rickman, he was phenomenal in Potter.
