    Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

Given that I'm a massive Partridge fan, I went into this with trepidation considering the majority of big screen versions of TV shows (particularly British sit coms) are generally pants, but I have to say this film was great.

Really very funny. Coogan on top form as ever with fine support particularly from Colm Meaney. It was great to see Michael and Lynn again, even if their part's could have been bigger.

    9/10

    Book Of Stars (1999)

Jena Malone is Mary, Mary Stuart Masterson is Penny, they're both sisters, but while Mary suffers the symptoms of cystic fibrosis, Penny turns to prostitution and drugs to both pay for the medical care and escape from the inevitable outcome. Even at the age of 15, Malone was showing talent beyond her years.

    Jena Malone ranking: 2/23

Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995)
Almost done with my Die Hard marathon. I really enjoy this one. It was very well made. The plot is good and the suspense is terrific. Willis and Jackson really have great chemistry for two characters who had nothing in common at first.

up last is Live Free or Die Hard.

I finished 'Mission: Impossible II,' yesterday, then I watched 'Taken' and started a Matrix trilogy marathon, making it through the first two films. Almost done with the third now, then I'll move on to something else in my collection.

'Kill List' is one of those films that you just aren't expecting the ending of. What an insane twist, I loved it.

Neil Maskell has proved to be something of a revelation in the last couple of years. After co-starring alongside Danny I'll Crack Your Fackin' Canister Dyer in durge like The Football Factory, he was brilliant in Kill List and Utopia.

Maskell is superb in both Kill List and Utopia, apart from A Field In England Wheatley hasn't disappointed me, Sightseers for me is his best film to date although I'm yet to see his debut Down Terrace.

Very much look forward to his Doctor Who episodes.

    Just watched Doberman

Seems like a French director being too influenced by Hollywood, yes it's pretty fast paced and violent but what a waste of Vincent Cassell & his gorgeous Wife Monica Belluci.

Ludicrous and just plain dumb, it just goes to show the European's can make guff when they want to as well.

Yeah, it's a very good film indeed. Shame they blew it with the redundant sequel.

    The Naked Face

Only ever saw this once before, and that was a long time ago. Not a bad film but there is a problem with the pacing. It does trudge along. Roger's very good in it though and nice to see him on screen again with David Hedison.

    Gravity

The special effects are incredible. Both Clooney and Bullock are very good in their roles, but the story itself has a bit of a "seen it before" feel to it. I also felt they pushed some of the emotional drama a little too much at times.

Additionally, there are a couple of fairly obvious "homages" to Alien.

    Watched Take Shelter

I have a strong admiration for Michael Shannon (I've met him several times this past year at some theatre events. Couldn't be a nicer guy). He gives an outstanding performance in this Thriller/Drama. It builds up slowly and there are many parts when you're on the edge of your seat. The ending was a bit...meh, but it didn't take away from a great film with great acting.

Finished my 'The Matrix' marathon, wrapping up the trilogy today. Still stands as one of my favorite trilogies, though I agree with most in that 'Revolutions' is by far the weakest of the trilogy and was heavily anticlimactic and confusing.

After returning to the classic 'Max Payne 2,' I've decided to watch 'Max Payne.'

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

What a fantastic thriller. It didn't feel as long as it was. The acting was suburb. I hope they make the sequels soon.

    'Take Me Home Tonight'

Huge guilty pleasure of mine, it shows off the 80's quite nicely, and the pairing of Grace and Fogler is excellent. Great cast, laugh riot throughout the whole movie, with a wonderful ending. This is a go-to, feel good comedy that I really enjoy.

    Gravity (3D)

Finally got around to seeing this last night (I love when the cinema is virtually empty). Astonishing. One of the most jaw dropping films I've ever experienced on the big screen. For once the use of 3D is totally justified and it works brilliantly. Sandra Bullock is outstanding (not a sentence I use too often). It was also a smart move in keeping it's runtime at a brisk 90 minutes.

A note of caution, I do wonder how much of this extravaganza will be lost on the small screen. Only time will tell I guess.

    9.5/10 - Excellent

PS: I still hate those 3D glasses.

    Live Free or Die Hard.

Much better than I remember it. I really enjoyed it after this viewing. I take back what I said about it. It feels more like a Die Hard movie than 5. 5 is your generic action blockbuster that pretends to be a Die Hard movie. Bruce Willis is actually acting in this one. The music in this one also sounded more like Michael Kamen's music too. It sounded better in this than AGDTDH.

    Murdock's Die Hard Retrospective.

    Die Hard. 10/10

Die Hard 2: Die Harder. 8/10

Die Hard with a Vengeance. 9/10

Live Free or Die Hard. 8/10

A Good Day to Die Hard. 5/10

@Murdock, you got me interested in trying out a 'Die Hard' marathon the other day, but stopped a few minutes in as I've watched the first three so much lately that I wanted to move on to something different.

I was really excited because I haven't seen any of them in a few years and couldn't resist doing one. :)

I don't blame you there. I still have yet to do a marathon with all five. I'm thinking about either doing a 'Resident Evil' marathon soon (after getting 'Retribution' added to my blu-ray collection) or an 'Alien' marathon, from 'Prometheus' through the fourth 'Alien' film.

Are you including the AVP films in that too? Christ, I hope not. No one should have to suffer those ;-)

@WillyGalore, absolutely not. I still slap myself for debating picking up 'AvP' on blu-ray a few weeks ago. I'm glad I passed on that idea!

I couldn't get to sleep this past Monday morning, and Die Hard was on the country music channel for some reason, so I give it a watch right when John is undressed to his classic white muscle shirt. The only annoying thing was that I needed my sleep and for some reason the commercial breaks came every eight to ten minutes and lasted at least seven to eight minutes each, so I left it to get shut eye after getting anger with it, only coming back to catch the end of the film when I still couldn't sleep. Though I saw the film in pieces, it was a fun time, regardless of the ridiculous frequency and length of the commercial breaks. It's basically why I never watch my favorite films on TV networks; I hate it when the action gets broken up, and some networks choose the stupidest times to head to commercials.

They have in recent versions, but I remember seeing this poorly dubbed mess playing all the time in the late 90's. I still don't know who "Mister Falcon" is!

Bruce Willis is obviously Spanish in that scene. :))
