I've never let film length bother me, because if it's that long, there must be a good story behind it that wants to be told.

Exactly. You can't condense Lawrence despite what some would have you believe. Even if it was only 30 minutes shorter, it wouldn't be as good.

I really have to see this movie now. I wonder how I can get my hands on it since I mainly use Redbox and it isn't a film I would want to watch on my computer.

Ohhhhh, no. Not at all. It has to be on at least the television. As I said, I have the Blu-ray on an HDTV and it's like nothing I've seen before. Even Minority Report (which I watched last week - for the first time in a decade I might add, despite it being one of my all-time favourite movies - and never did do a review for) and The Godfather + Part II didn't look this good.

They did a screening of Lawrence of Arabia, it ran for about a week or two, at the AMC in Dundas Square, I presume in honour of Peter who had just passed away right before. That was when the ice storm hit so I never made it out, and I regret it heavily as I may never have the chance to see Lawrence in the cinema.

I've seen screenshots of the blu-ray and the quality is phenomenal for such an older film. Hell, the image on the last page is stunning in quality and sharpness. Now you're persuading me to just buy the film on blu-ray...

I strongly encourage it, in fact I urge it. Believe me, you'll see it (the quality) instantly.

I should warn you, there is an absolutely brilliant Overture at the beginning of the film, which goes through all the motifs in Jarre's score. There's no picture until the overture is over (whereas in the past it was a grey, illuminated screen with "OVERTURE" in the centre) so, should you get it on Blu-ray, don't be concerned when the movie starts and continues for 5 minutes as a purely black screen. The intermission (which is a couple minutes shorter) is the same.

There's this beautiful looking four-disc set that I would love to own, but I think I should go with the remastered version instead of shelling out so much for something I've never seen. Is that what you own, the two-disc remastered edition? I just want to make sure I'm getting my money's worth quality-wise if I do splurge and buy it.

Also, @chrisisall, you can get 'Riddick' on sale on Amazon right now on blu-ray for $17.99, or pick it up used on blu-ray (total) for $15 at www.gohastings.com. I thought about buying it just now, but I'm sure it'll drop in price soon.

You're quite welcome! I think my problem with movies is I rent one, love it, buy it, don't rewatch it for another few months, and by that time, it's heavily dropped in price and I could've waited all along. Since you've yet to see it and you're debating buying it, I'd buy it at that price.

Classic films will always look better as they have the most to improve on visually, whereas the more recent a film is the more advanced it already looks and you don't notice it as much. I love getting black and white classic films on Blu-ray; they look like nothing else. I love the grainy quality of it too.

I need to get on the Lawrence train as well. I've always meant to see it, but never crossed paths with it yet.

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7, that's debatable. A few of the Bond blu-rays aren't terribly stunning in terms of quality like 'Lawrence of Arabia' is, and some films that were released in the past few years look much better than the older Bond films do.

It wasn't on Blu-ray, but I caught The Third Man being aired in HD, and that was incredible. 70 year old movie, made to look barely as old as Schindler's List.
  • Just watched original REC. It certainly loosened up the bowels.

God I love The Third Man. Got me pretty hooked on the zither too, might I add. I've been looking for that Blu-ray for ages, but I guess I'll have to order it on Amazon if I never cross paths with it. Same with The Maltese Falcon.

'REC' will do that. So incredibly intense and frightful, I love that movie.

    'Anchorman 2'

It had its funny moments with some cool cameos, but it wasn't as good as the first and it was pretty far-fetched throughout the entire thing. Not as terrible as I thought it would be, not as great as I hoped it would be.

    'Nebraska'

Touching, beautiful, I really enjoyed the black and white and the casting was really something. I've been a fan of Alexander Payne's for a while now, and he can really tell a story or emit so many emotions from something as simple as a father and a son driving down a road, watching the landmarks and signs go back. Excellent film. It was nice seeing Will Forte in a drama, and I thought June Squibb stole a lot of the scenes.

    The Devil's Double

Hadn't seen this for a while. I think it's a great, underrated film. Violent, fast paced with an amazing, Oscar worthy performance from Dominic Cooper. He plays Hussein and his body double and makes them seem like completely different characters.

Reviews for this compared it to Scarface and I can sort of see why. You have the flash, wealthy, drug fuelled lifestyle and both are pretty violent and graphic. Story wise though they're very different films.

@thelivingroyale, It's a shame Tamahori didn't bring that quality to DAD.

    'The Spectacular Now'

I thought it ran a bit all over the place and while it wasn't as generic or typical as you'd expect - though it still slightly is - it wasn't the best of these types of films. Slightly above average, I'd say. Plus, you get to see Shailene Woodley shirtless, so that's a plus!

    'The Lone Ranger'

Honestly? Wasn't as bad as I thought it was gonna be. The running time surprised me, but I thought the chemistry between Depp and Hammer was good and the fight scenes were pretty entertaining.

Tedious , unfunny affair.......for example Ica Age films , Bee Movie were much MUCH better than this.

    'Catching Fire'

I hadn't seen 'The Hunger Games' since it was in theaters, so I felt pretty lost throughout, but a few friends gave me the info nudge on what was going on. Wasn't crazy about the beginning of the movie, but it got better as it went along. Wish the main battle lasted longer, but it was still a good movie. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the last one.

    There's Something About Mary - 8/10
The shock comedy aside (zip and hair gel scenes), purposeful non-politically correct moments (humour at expense of handicapped, animal cruelty), the most surprising thing about this film is it has heart and is rather sweet. It's not the completely nasty, cruel comedy I was expecting. There's a nice love story in here too. It's corny and clichéd and doesn't feel overly cloying because there are enough shockingly funny moments to offset it. The acting is good, the pacing brisk, and the jokes, well... you've heard all about the best ones by now.

I think Tamahori is a good director but I think he was too much of a fanboy (filling the film with cheesey references) and he relied too much on CGI (we all know which scene I'm talking about).

He's better with something like The Devils Double because it's a thriller and there is some action, but it's on a smaller scale. He can direct action quite well but when he's given a big action film like DAD, with explosions and laser satellites, he goes overboard with the CGI.

He's a good director but he shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near a Bond film, especially not one as OTT as Die Another Day.

    'The Counselor'

Wow. What an unflinching, brutal, well-written film. Nowhere near as bad as people think. I guess some saw it as hard to follow, so they thought the film had no point? I don't know, but I thought the dialogue was great and it had a lot of excellent twists and turns throughout. Blew me away.
  • Blue is the Warmest Colour - a film that is beyond the sum of its parts - beautiful, touching (a lot of touching), and poetic. Loved it (and loved myself at the same time).

I've really been meaning to get around to watching that, as well. I've only heard fantastic things about it.

    'Carrie' (2013)

Another remake that I knew wouldn't be as good, but really surprised me with how bad it was. I love Chloe Grace Moretz, but she lacked the awkward, shy, socially inept persona that Sissy Spacek displayed so well in the original. This is just another horror classic that didn't really warrant a remake in the slightest. Didn't care for the rest of the cast, and the film really seemed to go nowhere or make any progress until the infamous prom scene, and even that was a let-down.
  • Just watched 2001 on my new 50 incher - awesome. Still so good after all these years.

For fans of the movie and people who like to dabble in the creative arts this is right up your street. I implore to visit this site and anyone who thinks that Kubrick cocked up with The Shining with his 'movie mistakes', just view the dedication he lavished on 2001. Up yours Michael Bay....

    300-RISE OF AN EMPIRE
If you liked the first, no reason why you would not like this. Not a reprisal, but a different story and backdrop. Beautiful images, naked Eva Green, same cartoonish violence that does not disgust you as some other films. Recommended.

I might get backlash for this but in my honest opinion 2001 is the most overrated movie of all time.

I also think that 300 is really overrated so I'm not sure if I want to see the 2nd one, altough Vesper seems really badass in the trailers.
