@Creasy47 But Expendables 3 isn't out for weeks. How did you see it already? :-?

It definitely wasn't the DVD screener that leaked online that some people will watch because they're hesitant on paying money to see it in theaters due to the sudden PG-13 rating. That's all I'll say. ;)

And I did not, repeat not, download a copy of it last night. ;-)

First two films: excellent choices. The third, just wondering, did you like that one, @SharkBait? :-)

It's not a masterpiece, but it served it's purpose. So, I enjoyed it.

I'm right with you on Expendables 3. It was so bad, but even worse it was just so boring. The one liners in this make DAD's seem quite sophisticated. The worst being Stallone's final zinger: "I am the Hague!".

If I was Brosnan, I'd steer well clear of the next film.

I'm happy you agree. A month ago, the thought of Brosnan in the fourth film had me excited, but if it's just going to be like this, then I'll pass. Terrible film, and like you said, cringeworthy one liners. Did you think Sly was this massive, pouting crybaby throughout the whole thing, too? I didn't feel like he wanted revenge, he just came across as too pouty.

Stallone was grumbling and taking it all far too seriously. Gibson was doing his over-the-top Martin Riggs schtick. Banderas was bloody annoying. And everyone else was just on autopilot. And they all happily collected their cheques at the end of it no doubt.

The action was just insipid and dull. And poor special effects and editing as you've already pointed out.

    Just awful.

I'm very happy to know that I wasn't merely being cynical when I sat down to watch it, because I was expecting yet another fun action film. I didn't even take the PG-13 rating into consideration, but sure enough, sometimes the ratings do matter. They apparently shot it with an R-rating in mind, turned it in, nearly received one, then they had to cut a bunch, hence a lot of the awkward cuts and editing that ruined portions of the film. It was really, really laughable at times, and from the get go, it honestly seemed like they showed up just to collect a check, much like Bruce Willis does these days. Nothing felt like it was on the line, nobody seemed dedicated or interested in the mission, nothing.

I figure the leak and poor word-of-mouth has already hurt the film weeks in advance. I'm sure it'll still rake in the heavy dough, though.

Arnie looks in a lot better shape than Stallone so there's still hope for Terminator next year but my word doesn't Harrison Ford look and sound so old now (because he is I guess). I'll be amazed if he's doing all three Star Wars movies.

Yeah, Ford looks way past his prime, and you're right, Arnie looks in great shape. I was surprised. In a few scenes, his accent sounded really good, too. Arnie was probably one of the only parts I liked in the movie, and there were one or two shots I liked (Snipes sliding off the top of the train to grab that guy, and the little guy at the end jumping from that explosion.) That was it for me.

Yeah I'm excited for Godfather Part II (should be able to watch soon), but I've heard bad things about the third. Might just skip out. But the first would definitely rank among the best/my favorite films that I've ever seen.

This movie was great fun, I was chuckling throughout most of it. Arnold is obviously having fun in this movie.

    7/10.

Just started watching this on Youtube myself. God Arnie is bad even by his standards.

I'm going to need a beer.

Also the brawl in the casino reminds me of LTK.

    'American Gangster'

Haven't rewatched this in a few years, so I popped in the blu-ray and watched the three-hour extended cut. I love this film, but it's intercut with a lot of new footage so the pacing tends to be here and there at times. Still, it has some tense moments, a lot of character backstories, some built-up, tense shootouts, and a great resolution, even if it is 1% realistic/99% Hollywood. I also like that they had the real Frank Lucas and Richie Roberts on set to help with filming, to add in little bits of authenticity where they could. Scott did really well with capturing the 70's in this, as well, and the cast list is stellar. This is probably the only film that I truly like RZA in.

I have not seen this yet. Russell Crowe, right? I really admire him. I may need to rent this. (won't be the extended version obviously) But I'm curious: Who is RZA, @Creasy47?

Bad things? It may not be quite as fabulous as the first two, but I think it's still a very good movie, definitely worth seeing, and it wraps up Michael Corleone's story. I don't know how many times I've seen them all, but I'd happily re-watch all three of them any time. :)

    Raw Sewage :p

Pretty naff. Although a better film in itself I can sort of see what inspired Licence to Kill three years later.

The first two are, along with CITIZEN KANE and CASABLANCA, the finest american films ever made. GODFATHER PART III was made over a decade after the other three and is not anywhere close to the same caliber. There are moments where the old magic starts to come through, but they don't last very long.

I would say along with Chinatown. But then, we can keep adding to that list, can't we? :)

Casablanca (1942), directed by Michael Curtiz, starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre...

Many writers, rewrites, changes made daily, filming with an unfinished script, nobody knowing how it would end and all... but it didn't end up too bad, did it? ;)

A great cast. Looks fantastic (I never want to see the colored version, ugh). Great music. A classic, obviously.

The documentary on the disc was interesting, I hadn't seen that before. Oh and now (that I know about and have seen a clip) I really, really want to see Carrotblanca. :P

@4EverBonded, indeed, Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington. Great pairing. RZA is a rapper who turned actor, I suppose, but still raps? He's in 'Brick Mansions,' 'The Man With The Iron Fists,' and 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation.' Terrible acting in everything but 'American Gangster.'

wow that was disappointing. They should rename the series The Fastforwardables because all the good stuff is at the end. I wanna see fun cheesy action and one liners. Not pretentious sob stories about one dimensional characters. If Brosnan does the forth one, I can tell you he'd be wasted like Van Damm and Gibson.

Even the ending was insanely disappointing. They set it up for a huge fight, and it was a lot of cheesy comedy from Banderas' part, really unbelievably dull moments, and tons of cannon fodder being taken out in lame PG-13 fashion that didn't get me pumped in the slightest. The fight between Stonebanks and Barney was way too short for a two-hour plus film, and it was disappointing to boot. Then, you top it all off with a horrid CGI explosion as Barney is screaming across the rooftop. The movie was textbook dreadful.

I got around to seeing the movie myself...
wow that was disappointing. They should rename the series The Fastforwardables because all the good stuff is at the end. I wanna see fun cheesy action and one liners. Not pretentious sob stories about one dimensional characters. If Brosnan does the forth one, I can tell you he'd be wasted like Van Damm and Gibson.
Now you can see what Willy and I were agreeing on. I feel like this movie is going to bomb at the box office at this point, with the leak and terrible word-of-mouth.

I felt like I was watching a direct to video movie. I like the idea of these movies but the execution is such a missed opportunity.

Exactly, and not a direct-to-DVD movie that's surprisingly good. Just...awful trash.

Was this an asylum film? :))

300: Rise of an Empire (2014)
    300_RISE_OF_AN_EMPIRE_KISSTHEMGOODBYE_NET__28134029.jpg

To call 300: Rise of an Empire a massive disappointment would be a massive understatement. Coming eight years after Zack Snyder's surprisingly decent 300, this film fails to live up to its predecessor in almost every way.

The most notable problem with the film is its over reliance on slow motion and 3D "moments". The blood effects in the film are also quite poor, which plays into both of the first two complaints, as every blow to the body of a soldier in the film brings with it a slow-motion shot of the weapon striking them and then some rather unrealistic-looking blood flying through the air, often times directly at the screen (still in slow motion) to get the 3D effect. It gets tiresome very quickly.

The acting is rather abysmal as well. No, nobody's expecting Oscar-caliber performances here, but it's all pretty subpar here.

The only bright spot in this film is Eva Green. She carries the entire thing on her back. She relishes the villainous role that she plays, making her Artemisia a thoroughly entertaining villain. The problem is that the film around her is a mess, and a villain without decent heroes can only make but so much impact.

    1/5

The film gets a rating of 1 out of 5, with the one star being awarded solely for Eva Green and her work in the film.

A great cast. Looks fantastic (I never want to see the colored version, ugh). Great music. A classic, obviously.

The documentary on the disc was interesting, I hadn't seen that before. Oh and now (that I know about and have seen a clip) I really, really want to see Carrotblanca. :P

Excellent choice, @Tuulia! One of the best films ever made.

Another nostalgic "guilty pleasure" of mine

    Dumb and Dumber

"She left this at the airport" (indicates briefcase)
    "What's in it?"
"Man...I'd have to be a lowlife to go rooting around in somebody else's private property"
    "Is it locked?"
    "Yeah...really well"

    :))

I've decided I'm not going to see the second.

Still one of the very best in the series. Such amusement! And this one doesn't even include Clouseau at the centre of things.

Yes, it's wonderful. It had been years since I'd seen it and strangely, I had forgotten about the excellent humour in it. :)

Saw 2 other films yesterday, but they were nothing special. Both sounded more interesting than they were.

The Shape Of Things (2003), starring Rachel Weisz, Paul Rudd, Gretchen Mol. Not bad, but I can't say I liked it, either.

Wild Target (2010), starring Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Rupert Grint, Eileen Atkins, Martin Freeman, Rupert Everett. I assume it was supposed to be funny, but to me it wasn't, but sure seemed to be trying hard.

@dalton, you've been here only a short time, but I've found that you and I have a lot of similarities in our likes and dislikes with film, so I'll pass on giving '300: Rise Of An Empire' another shot. I caught a few minutes of it and what I noticed is what you complained about: slow-motion heavy kills with cheesy CGI and awful looking blood that took you right out of the experience.

@Tuulia, I saw 'Wild Target' when it was out and I really enjoyed it. Bill Nighy was the one giving me the most laughter, as there were a lot of subtle comedic moments with him, such as when he tries to rush out the door first to make sure the coast is clear. It gets completely quiet, and he looks up and down the empty hall a few times, and silently says "All clear," as Blunt's character storms off.

I think that 300: Rise of an Empire is really only worth viewing a single time @Creasy47, if it's even worth that much, simply for Eva Green. Not saying it because she's been in one of the better Bond films of late, but she really is the only redeeming quality the film has. She's rather entertaining in the film, and she and her villain are completely wasted on an almost non-existant story and lame effects.
