  • Last night: Goldeneye. And yesterday, just before that? From Russia With Love...Nerd? Guilty. (I also watched a German documentary on Nazi Germany, but I didn't finish it and can't remember the name, so it doesn't count.)

At last, I got my hands on a copy. In a word: fantastic. Jim Naboth (Stacy Keach - with a credible accent) is an ex-Scotland Yard detective whom just can't stay on the wagon (the film opens with a drunken Keach attempting - and failing - to navigate his way up an escalator). Naboth's ex-wife and her daughter are kidnapped by a gang of villains (led by David Hemmings) in the hope that her husband (Edward Fox) will steal money from his own security firm. Fox enlists the help of Keach, the latter getting plastered the night before the exchange is due to be made. An old-skool british crime thriller, in the fashion of Get Carter and The Sweeney films.

Directed by Michael Apted, The Squeeze and TWINE could not be any more polar opposites.

    Stacy Keach
    1. The Squeeze (1977)
    2. Doc (1971)
    3. Antigone (1972)
    4. Battle Fore (1978)
    5. Mike Hammer: Murder Takes All (1989)
    6. Mission Of The Shark (1991)
    7. The Return Of Mickey Spillanes Mike Hammer (1986)
    8. Intimate Strangers (1986)
    9. Unshackled (2000)

    The Fugitive

A great film, Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones are great. I was watching on AMC with story notes appearing at the bottom of the screen detailing movie info and trivia. I was waiting for when Jeroen Krabbe to appeared on screen to see if they posted about his Bond appearance and they did!

Its not even listed on Netflix!

There's a 1978 film titled The Squeeze starring Lee Van Cleef, but it is not the one you speak of. I'm dissapointed, seeing as it looks and sounds like an excellent film!

    _BREAK_

I watched "The Chaser" yesterday, which is a South Korean film. I've recently fallen in love with gritty dramas that have come out of South Korea over the past decade. Oldboy and it's two sequels: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance(5*'s), The Chaser, Mother, The Man From Nowhere (5*'s) and many many more.

I have yet to watch Mr. Vengeance and Mother, but plan to soon. The Chaser is described as:

When his escorts start disappearing without settling their debts, cash-strapped pimp -- and former police detective -- Joong-ho (Yun-seok Kim) draws upon the skills of his old job to track down the recently missing Mi-Jin (Yeong-hie Seo). Cynical Joong-ho assumes a rival pimp has been siphoning off his labor pool, but it isn't long before our hero closes in on the real and deadly truth in this gritty and gripping South Korean thriller.

If you don't mind subtitles, and are interested in excellent story telling, suspense like never before, and the best acting around, you'll love The Chaser.

South Korea cinema, in my opinion, easily beats anything the Europeans or their cousins can produce.

It is a largely overlooked gem. I'm a big Keach fan, so I really wanted to get my hands on a copy. It's only available on DVD through the Warner Archive Collection (so it's not going to be a mass produced DVD), and seeing as I don't hand any credit cards, I just had to wait and be patient for a copy to pop up on DVD. There's a copy on ebay, from the us...

Rare Exports (the newest one) is simply amazing. I loved that movie. Such a good twist-ish thing towards the end. Very christmas-ey

The Illusionist 4/6......wasn't all that impressed , just something I watched to kill time. Nice twist in the end.

Live a little , love a little 4/6......Elvis has to juggle 2 jobs at once as a photographer. Edge of Reality music number is nice , movie also features "Little less conversation" which was a remix hit few yrs ago. Better than average as far as EP movies go.

Connery The Magnificent in 'The Wind And The Lion'. Unquestionably one of Sir Sean's finest performances. And what a score by Jerry Goldsmith! As classic as they come.

I watched the shining after a night on the razz. not a pleasant experience.
  • Last film I saw was Sherlock Holmes 2 which I thought was brilliant as a popcorn blockbuster and interestingly very bondesque.Guy Ritchie a future Bond director perhaps?I never thought so before but showed brilliant flashes of what he could do. May have to do away with the ballistic slo-mo.Great in SH 2 not for bond though.BTW Jared Harris brilliant brooding menace.

    12. Angel Face (1952)
    **13. Thompson's Last Run (1986) NE**
    14. Five Card Stud (1968)
    15. Track Of The Cat (1954)
    16. Anzio (1968)
    17. Agency (1980)

  • Scarface, and its still awesome
  • It was The Omen (original 1976) about two days ago

What a quite brilliant piece of filmmaking, I genuinely felt like turning away from the screen once or twice although have seen it countless times

The subsequent other films in the series were never as good and although they tried to do a remake a few years ago they'll never be able to better the original

    Scary stuff :-S
  • just watching The Lovely Bones - I wish I hadn't. With a young daughter this movie makes me feel sick to the bottom of stomach. These animals are out there; feel sick.
  • just finished watching kill bill 2, still a great film

I saw Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows just a while ago, and was pleasantly surprised at just how well Ritchie handled the Sherlock/Moriarty dynamic. The acting is top notch, the cinematography brilliant, and the story a weaving spider's web full of twists and turns. The first film was amazing, but this one stomped it. The locations picked for the film were great, and Hans Zimmer serves up yet another beautiful track. Robert and Jude keep the Sherlock/Watson dynamic perfectly sound, and in the film you begin to see deeper than ever that these two love each other. Mary Morestan, played by the attractive Kelly Reilly has a great part throughout the film, as well as Mycroft, this time in person, played by the hilarious Stephen Fry. The villainous Moriarty is played to exceptional frivolity by Jared Harris, who really got it down to pat. The proverbial "chess game" going between Sherlock and Moriarty throughout the film is one of the best things this film has to offer. If you, like me, are a huge Sherlock Holmes fan concerning the Doyle short stories and novels, you will love this, especially if you have read "The Final Problem". Overall the film did so many wonderful things well, from great action to small little winks at the Doyle short stories that only fans can pick up on. A stellar edition to the new series of Sherlock Holmes films, and I would recommend it to all.

    Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

I thought Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows was good but not great. The first was far better in my opinion. The new one, in many way felt like a retread to me, sadly.

Last film I watched was Stanley Kubrick's 1962 masterpiece 'Lolita' - which has a bit of a Bond connection: The cast features our beloved Lois Maxwell as a nurse and future Felix, Cec Linder, as a doctor; Bond villain in waiting Christopher Lee also puts in an appearance when the main characters attend a drive-in showing 'The Curse Of Frankenstein'; and of course Kubrick advised the crew of TSWLM on how to light Ken Adam's gargantuan tanker set. Small world, huh?

A Lonely Place To Die (2011)

    A-Lonely-Place-to-Die-Steve-Dollar.jpg

Grade: F. F for fantastic. I regret not actaully going to see then upon it's cinema release. The price on the tickets and the fact that the DVD could be bought for not much more (it would have cost about £6 for the ticket, the DVD cost £9.99, that's just £3.99 more).

Have you read the Conan Doyle short stories and novels? Specifically "The Final Problem", which is the short story featuring Sherlock and Moriarty.
