True Lies. I had never seen this one before, and I remember reading a rant by @DarthDimi about this film. I must say I agree with him. The film starts well and ends well, but the whole plot about Jamie Lee Curtis discovering that Arnie is a spy is just boring and uninteresting. Either the film should have been an hour shorter, or you remove Jamie Lee Curtis and let Arnie be a badass for 2 hours. As it stands the film is quite a chore to get through. And it's a shame, as there are some epic scenes (Arnie on the horse and Arnie flying a jet fighter).

I guess you are on the younger side if you haven't seen movies like True Lies, which of course is perfectly alright :)

I have to say, True Lies is one of those movies that worked perfectly in the nineties but have aged not very well. I remember being very excited after seeing it at the movie theatre but when I watched it on Blu-ray last year, I realised how dated it is.

    The Guest

This seemed promising for quite some time... and then it went bad. There was potential for so much more, but in the end it was very disappointing, and frankly stupid. I also find it irritating when "experts" in a movie behave like bleedin idiots in order to create more "drama" and "excitement" for the audience - which in this case meant lots of both innocent and not so innocent people uselessly killed, and somehow it's not even considered such a big deal.

I'm ashamed that before tonight, there was one very popular trilogy that I had never seen.... My error is now almost repaired, as I've just finished Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II! I have no idea why it took me so long to finally watch these films. I love every single second of both these films. The first film is fantastic, one of the best sci-fi/adventure/comedy films I've ever seen, and then Part 2 knocked my pants off, because it was even better! This is one of the best double-features I've ever done. Tomorrow I shall watch Part 3 to conclude this trilogy that instantly joined my all times favorite movie series! Man, they just don't make films like they used to do. I sure would give anything to be a teen in 1989 - Back to the Future 2, Lethal Weapon 2, Batman, Licence to Kill, The Last Crusade...

Beyond Thunderdome works for me UNTIL we get to the kids. Bartertown is exciting, but halfway through the film, everything changes into a story about children awaiting the coming of a saviour of sorts. Pathetic nonsense.
To ME, it was like Batman Returns... a "WHA_??" , but a very entertaining one.

    'Picnic at Hanging Rock' (1975)

What a terrific film. A group of college girls and their instructors in 1900 Australia take a day trip to Hanging Rock - a geological formation - for a picnic. When a few of them disappear, everyone starts to wonder where they went and what happened. I won't say more, given the heightened ambiguity throughout the movie, but once you really start to think about it, it puts a whole different spin on things and makes you look at the movie in a totally different way. I loved it.

Another classic @Creasy47. A haunting film, lovely cinematography, well acted, beautiful music and a cracking mystery. Also fell in love with Helen Morse when I saw this.

Happy I'm not the only one, and I'm glad you also loved it! I'm guessing the best word to describe my experience with the film was 'mesmerized.' I couldn't look away.

@DaltonCraig007 I actually saw Back to the Future II in the theater with my dad, age 6!
.... And at the time I didn't understand half of it, lol.
I had to be a bit older to fully grasp the story- and BTTF is one of the best trilogies out there! I'll look forward to hearing what you think of part III. It's easily the weakest, but everything is wrapped up so nicely.

I often wonder how the series would have gone if they kept Eric Stoltz as Marty- supposedly he filmed nearly ALL of his scenes before they changed their mind!

Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. For me, this is the ultimate horror film - I love the isolation, I love the setting (massive hotel/wintertime theme), I love the complexity, I love the buildup, I love the climax, and I love Jack Nicholson's performance. Some might say the first half is slow, but I like it all the same. I'm just always invested when I'm watching this classic - can't imagine this ever being topped as my favorite horror movie.

I was 15 in 1989 and have seen all those movies at the theatre.

But except for that, being a teen in 1989 wasn't all that great.
No iPhone, no phone whatsoever actually, no iPod, a CD-Man was the best you could get then. The most horrid fashion you can imagine. 21" TV sets, no Dolby 5.1 surround at homes yet, VHS..., Thatcher, Kohl, George Bush, François Mitterrand (for those who were interested in politics).

Widescreen laserdiscs ... 1989 was fantastic, still was under 30, could see original aspect ratio in something way above VHS resolution, plus I actually liked the two movies that were big losers in 89, STAR TREK 5 and LTK. Could still buy and shoot Super8 film, too.

Not a 1982 by a long shot, but no year is ...

    Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)

    repo_genetic_opera_fan_poster_by_thirtysevensquared-d3b938j.jpg

Repo is directed by Darren Lynn-Bousman and stars Alexa Vega and Anthony Stewart Head. It is a horror comedy drama musical about a girl named Shilo Wallace and her father Nathan who is a repo man that takes peoples donated organs if they can't pay their debts. Shilo has a blood disease inherited from her dead mother and therefore is not aloud to go outside. But when Shilo gets involved with Rotti Largo, head of GeneCo and boss of her dad, things turn insane.

The performances here are all fantastic, especially by Anthony Stewart Head and all of the cast have fabulous singing voices. Except of course for the only weak spot of the film, Paris Hilton. However she isn't in it for long and
her face falls off throughout her solo
which is incredibly satisfying for all of us Paris Hilton haters.

The story is beautifully woven and all culminates in a beautiful, badass finale at the genetic opera. It features one of my favourite twists in cinema which I'm not even going to put in spoiler tags it is so good.

Let's talk about the music: it's perfect. All of the songs are amazing: my top 5 would go

    1. Infected
    2. Night Surgeon
    3. Let The Monster Rise
    4. I Didn't Know I Loved You So Much
    5. Zydrate Anatomy

but all of the songs get an 8/10 or higher for me, if only because of the brilliant heavy metal guitar work in some of the songs.

So, in summary, Repo! The Genetic Opera is a beautiful, badass blast of a film, and my main goal here was to shed some well-deserved light on this fantastic film.

    Story - 10
    Characters - 10
    Music -10
    Songs - 10
    Enjoyment level - 10

    Overall average - 10

Just finished Back to the Future Part III. Not as good as the first 2, but still highly entertaining. I loved the far west setting, and the last scene made me emotional. What a wonderful trilogy! If I had to rank them: BTTF 2, BTTF 1, BTTF 3. This is now one of my favorite trilogies. What a complete and utter epic moment of fun!

Just finished Con Air. Another film I heard a lot about and had only seen bits of it on TV over the years. An absolute cracker of a film. Cage is awesome, so are Cusack, Malkovich, Buscemi, Trejo and the entire crew who deliver highly entertaining performances. This film is full-blast action and tension from start to finish with a lot of humour as an added bonus. I do very much miss the 1990's.

If you haven't seen those, go and watch them :) all must-see movies of the nineties!
    - Face/Off (John Travolta, Nicolas Cage)
    - The Rock (Nicolas Cage/Sean Connery)
    - Long Kiss Goodnight (Geena Davis, Samuel L. Jackson)
    - Last Action Hero (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
    - The 13th Warrior (Antonio Banderas)
    - Assassins (Sylvester Stallone)
    - Desperado (Antonio Banderas)
    - From Dusk Til Dawn (George Clooney)

That'll take a while to watch:)

Why do I persist in taking so much abuse?

A Good Day To Die Hard

    0,5/5 and here's why:

    - Bruce Willis urgently has to be reminded how to play McClane. With the receding hair line went the fun. Willis' constant grumpiness is a detriment to the series. Bring back funny McClane from DH, Bruce!

    - Jai Courtney is the Justin Bieber of cinema. Please, no more. I watched you in this and in Divergent and both times I touched air.

    - The plot of DH5 makes absolutely no sense. It's worse than trying to follow the real versus the fake Fabergé Egg in Octopussy. So the villain did what exactly to get to the nuclear material yet to hide it so he couldn't find it yet to lock it up so he couldn't reach it only to find it and reach it??? Huh? I'm pretty sure I didn't have any hallucinogens before watching this film.

    - But even if the plot made sense, this is no DH material! This IMO is an abandoned script for another Taken sequel. Abandoned because it's worse than "not good"; it's re-yippykajee-diculous!

    - DH is supposed to be an epic action movie. Instead we have barely 90 minutes of cut scenes from a video game. Did the people who made this film ever actually see a DH film? O and I'm willing to include DH4 as a good DH film next to this piece of dark and stinky matter.

    - Great, another film about an action hero trying to prove to his kid that he still has it. Yeah, original huh? Even the previous DH did that.

    - Where are the enjoyable villains in my DH? Like the Grubers and even Colonel Stuart AND EVEN the hacker posse from DH4? In fact, where are the fun people - period? At least the last film had Justin Long and Kevin Smith with the great line, "you a fan of the Fett?". DH5 should have been called "Die Hard if You Dare to Have Fun". Because we really aren't allowed to have any fun.

    - The scene where Willis is yelling at everything and everyone in the middle of the Russian streets is an absolute low point for all, especially for Willis. Was this scene even scripted? It's worse than Willis' self-indulgent and improvised cameo in Ocean's 12. This isn't John McClane. This is Crazy Ralph telling the kids to stay away from Camp Crystal Lake for it has a death curse.

    - Mister John Moore, you already messed up Max Payne, why make it worse by giving us the exact same finale in DH5?

This is my Crystal Skull but far worse. This is my Basic Instinct 2 but far worse. This film's "raison d'être" is to annoy me, to take my money and spit in my hand.

My DH ranking is very simple:

    DH
    DH3
    an inch
    D2
    DH4
our universe and the next one too
    Hell
    Satan's holiday Hell
the sewer system of Satan's holiday Hell
    Kevin McClory's hatred towards Cubby
    DH5

Indeed, @Murdock. I remember having fun with DH4 first time I saw it. Well choreographed action and whatnot. DH5 is a fart in church. Everyone's embarrassed and it washes away in thin air.

I didn't like DH4 when I first saw it. I think because it was a little more over the top than the previous 3, but When I watched all 5 in order, It wasn't so bad to me. In fact it's my third favorite in the series.

Casino Royale '67 - a brilliant musical score that really adds to the movie and with a titlesong that is timeless, some flashes of brilliant and wicked sense of humor, SIr David Niven, an Ursela Andress not dubbed and more beautiful than in Doctor No, a collection of cameos that are just brilliant, Peter Sellers, Orson Welles and a collection of some of the most beautiful women from that era that all would make sense in the EON series. The movie is amusing to batshit crazy but beautiful shot. It might be a James Bond comedy somewhere but I prefer this easily to any Austin Powers any day of the week.
The added bones was the making of in 5 parts and the movie turns out to be miracle that it actually got made, and some great memories from an another era in movie making.

The only good thing about Die Hard 5, if you try to totally forget it's a Die Hard film, is seeing Bruce Willis machine gun everything that moves.

Anyway, I've just watched another popular duo of films I've never seen! I give you: Ghost busters and Ghostbusters 2. I've heard a lot of the first film on various threads on mi6 community lately, so I had to discover this film. Well, I was not prepared for how friggin epic, fun and entertaining it is! Bill Murray is an absolute legend, and so are the members of the Ghostbusters team. As for the 2nd one, I have no idea if it's as loved as the original film, but I sure enjoyed it just as much! What a joy to meet the old team back, and they seem to enjoy themselves twice as much, especially Bill Murray! I also did not know Segourney Weaver was in these films, so that was a major plus. Another splendid double feature, and I sure will rewatch these films many times in the future! 200% entertainment guaranteed!

Ghostbusters is indeed a nice duo of films. Very, very eighties though.
I have yet to re-watch them, I did buy both on Blu-ray. I wonder how the special effects will look in HD, I have seen some awful stuff on HD of old movies where the special effects looked horrible in HD.
