Watched 'Mad Max: Fury Road' yet again. I can't express how much I love this movie. Finishing up 'Predator' now.

    The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

A shockingly boring movie, and I still have a hard time understanding how. If this is anything to go by, Guy Richie should stay away from James Bond.

Watching The Fugitive (1993). Love this film; it's a favorite of mine.

I love that film too. The end battle between Kimble and Koskov Nichols is great.

Captain America - Winter Soldier (2014)

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Anchored by another superb Henry Jackman score (I think this is actually better than what he did for Kingsman), this film totally rocks. The set pieces are absolutely marvelous. All of them.

Standouts include the early one of Cap running around the deck of the ship (filmed from all angles) and beating the living crap out of a bunch of thugs. There's some really superior fight choreography here. The attack on Fury's car is one of the great ambush scenes in film. Cap's thrashing of over 10 Hydra strike operatives inside an elevator shames the one in QoS & Die Hard 3. Finally, the Winter Soldier's roadside ambush of Cap, Romanoff and the Falcon on the highway is another masterpiece in tension and action sequencing. Intense.

It's great to see Robert Redford hamming it up. Love the guy and we don't see him often enough any more. Jackson is great as always, and Evans imbues the Cap with the necessary boy scout qualities. Johansson is born to play the Black Widow.

This film features great shots of Washington DC, and really has a beautiful mix of Bond, Die Hard, Bourne & Marvel in it.

One of the best super hero films of all time imho. Marvelous stuff. Can't wait for Civil War.

    Yup!

My sentiments exactly. The elevator scene had more tension than the entirety of SP. WS is an incredible film on all fronts without compromising on the absurdity of the more comic book elements. Great great film.

    Taken (2008)

Fantastic film, Liam Neeson as Brian Mills is as badass as one can get. Sky-high body count, thanks to 2 huge shootouts and many other epic trashings of bad guys. The 2nd half of the film is one classic scene after the next, it just doesn't stop knocking my pants down until Neeson completes his mission. I really like how Neeson goes from the cool, calm, caring dad to an unstoppable killing machine once the action starts. One of my favorite action movies of the last 10 years.

    Next up: 'Taken 2'.

    EDIT:

    Taken 2 (2012)

This film seems to get the same criticism as 'Die Hard 2' - for being a basic rehash of the original film with a new director that isn't up to par with their predecessors. I agree with that, but, I enjoy both DH2' and 'Taken 2'. This 2nd installement has plenty of cool moments: when Neeson tries to 'see' the route the van is taking while he is hostage in it, and when Neeson helps his daughter figure out where he is being held hostage in Istanbul. The body count is again very high, but in this outing they crammed all the shootouts in the last 25 minutes or so. However we do get a badass moment when Neeson grabs the AK-47 while entering the villains' lair - you know sh*t is about to get real. I also enjoy the car chase with the taxi: it's cool to see that the daughter is more than just a damsel in distress like in the first films - here she actively helps neutralizing some of the enemy forces.

    Next up: 'Taken 3'.

    EDIT:

    Taken 3 (2015)

Brilliant way to finish the trilogy. The story this time is different from the previous 2 outings, as Neeson has to clear his name from a crime he did not commit. The kill rate is quite smaller here - all is concentrated on an absolute mayhem shootout at the end. But the film makes up for it with a large amount of car/foot chases. It also features some pretty badass stunts from Neeson, who used to mostly do gun fights and fist fights in the previous 2 films. Forrest Whitaker is a great addition to the series, with his usual chewing up of the scenery.

Now that I've completed the 'Taken trilogy', tonight I will start another of the Liam Neeson 'action trilogies':

'Unknown' (2011). Review to come up once I finish the film.

    EDIT:

    Unknown (2011)

A fantastic low-key thriller for Liam Neeson. The first time I saw it in the cinema, the film kept me on the edge of my seat, trying to guess what would happen next, and what was really going on with Neeson's character. Great use of the cold, metalic setting of Berlin. Very good supporting cast too, thanks to the ever lovely Diane Kruger and January Jones. And I shouldn't forget Bruno Ganz and Frank Langella, who are always charismatic. Some great chases and fist fights in this film aswell.

    Next up: 'Non Stop' (2014).

    EDIT:

    Non Stop (2014)

2 years ago when I saw this film on the big screen it was the most fun experience I had in a while. Tonight, the fun was still there. A sort of 'Die Hard' on a plane with a Liam Neeson struggling against his drinking and smoking addictions and the distrust of all the passengers and his superiors. Top marks for Neeson who is brilliant here and for a tightly written script that fills this 100 minutes film with wall-to-wall gripping suspense.

Tomorrow I'll finish this with 'Run All Night'. And after that, who knows. Maybe some Jason Statham badassery is in order for me!

    EDIT:

    Run All Night (2015)

Another fantastic action film for Liam Neeson. I really like that it takes place during 1 night of mayhem, shootouts and car chases. Great acting by Neeson, Kinnaman and the ever so charismatic Ed Harris. The film also features a killer soundtrack, made by the same composer who worked on 'Mad Max: Fury Road'. The sequence where Neeson escapes the huge building with his son is one of my favorites scenes in recent Neeson films.

A long time ago I saw Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). Tonight I'll be watching Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) for the first time, and I'll work my way through the Star Trek movie series. I've also seen the 2009 reboot, so I've seen four of the films so far. I'd consider myself a casual fan (liked Khan and Voyage the most), but I wanted to check out the others. I'll report back with thoughts.

I'm really enjoying this first half of The Motion Picture. A little slow, sure, but I really like it! Maybe a bit underrated from what I've heard.

EDIT: Finished it. I definitely have to repeat I think it's underrated. Yes, it was slow at times, and there's not a lot of action, but I still enjoyed it overall. It held my attention, and it wasn't nearly as boring as I had been told (at least to me). Decent start to the movies IMO - simple and classic.

Just trucking along in my Trek marathon; finished up Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). I did like it, but honestly I prefer the first two. Spock is my favorite character, so I missed his presence in much of the movie, even though it remained decently entertaining. So far it's been a good marathon; current film ranking:

    1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
    2. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    3. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
  • Predestination watched it a few days ago, that film did surprise me. Its a bit messed up to say the least though quite original.

I am almost alone in disliking IV. I rate lowest of the original crew films.

Really? More than the dreaded V? I'll have to see both (long time since IV, but I remember liking it) and get back to you on that. I can't believe how hated The Motion Picture is; it doesn't set out to be an action-y film, but more a philosophical and mysterious one. I for one liked it quite a bit. So far all good; I'll see if IV is worse than I remember.

Enjoy that status my friend for STIV has THE best characterization of the entire movie series IMO with Spock's Mom at the beginning & Spock's Dad at the end and the awesome Italian agreement/disagreement in between. Yeah, okay, lack-O-Enterprise in this one but the cast has SO much more to work with acting-wise.

I've got to at least be in the minority of liking The Motion Picture a lot. I also really don't like the reboot a lot; I hate how it became more of an action spectacle.

Yeah I really think it shatters what Star Trek is supposed to be about. If it wasn't labeled "Star Trek", I'm sure I would have liked it a little more. I'll see the fourth one tonight, maybe the fifth too. I have my doubts about enjoying the movies that much that are post-Kirk and Spock.

Haven't heard of too many people who dislike Voyage Home, I gotta admit. My two cents....

    1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - 8.5/10
    2. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - 7.5/10
    3. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - 7.5/10
    4. Star Trek (09) - 7/10
    5. Star Trek Into Darkness - 7/10
    6. Star Trek: The Motion Picture [Director's Cut] - 6.5/10
    7. Star Trek: First Contact - 6.5/10
    8. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock - 6/10
    9. Star Trek: Nemesis - 5.5/10
    10. Star Trek: Insurrection - 5/10
    11. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - 5/10
    12. Star Trek: Generations (1994) - 4.5/10

Last one I watched was Voyage Home, actually. Gets too silly in a few places and is missing a good villain (see II and VI), but I just think the script is damn sharp.

I should also mention that I just watched Die Hard 2.

Yes, it is a bit of a cash in and yes I don't like how John McClane suddenly is an action hero when the whole appeal of his character was the opposite, but Die Hard 2 succeeds in doing something not many movies would have the guts to do nowadays. Colonel Stuart's crashing of the plane, coupled with McClane's utter failure to prevent it, is a shocking and sobering moment in an otherwise fairly shallow flick. The rest of the movie mostly works and that fight on the wing is a great ending, but that plane crash scene remains one of the most disturbing and effective villain characterizations I've seen in an action film. Die Hard 2 was also one of my first R-rated films I remember watching in its entirety so I do have a bit of a nostalgic connection to it.

Still my favorite Die Hard sequel, but still quite a bit behind the original.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). It's a fun, lighthearted Star Trek adventure. Most of the humor worked pretty well. The lack of a main antagonist felt odd, and I felt like the ending was overlong. I did enjoy it, but probably not as much as I did years ago. Every one has been a hit with me so far, but surprisingly, I'm going to have to rank this one last for now. To be fair, it's a very close call with Search for Spock.

    Star Trek Marathon Ranking:
    1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
    2. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
    3. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
    4. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

I'll have to check that one out; Kirk Douglas was great in Paths of Glory and Spartacus. I just finished up Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). Pretty disappointing overall, as I anticipated, but there were a few good moments still. By far the worst of the first five though.

Did you watch the Director's Cut of TMP? Slightly different, doesn't really change much but is slightly better. Agree with your ranking though maybe switch 3 and 4 or make them = 3rd.

I think I watched the theatrical TMP. Understandable with the rankings; I know the Voyage Home is a big favorite, and it is very good for some lighter fun, but Search for Spock surprised me with how much it had to offer. I'll be placing Undiscovered Country after I see it. I think I'm going to buy the collection to have them in one set.

@FoxRox, I like The Voyage Home, but it always leaves me feeling a bit flat at the end. Almost…'is that it?', SFS is, I think, unfairly maligned. TUC should come above TMP, a cracking film, plus its got David Warner in too!

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). What a way to bounce back from V and send off the original crew in style. Great Trek film; now I know why so many consider it one of the best. It earns a high ranking from me as well. On to the next generation!
