Black Mass Damn good film. Johnny Depp was great. I prefer this Depp over Tim Burton silly Depp. If they ever made a Biopic about Roger Moore I think Cumberbatch would be perfect.
Just a great thriller.
Imo, this his belongs into the category: Forgotten movies that are fun to (re-)discover.

With this all-star cast you can't go wrong. Well, almost.
The mystery is there and the movie actually is very suspenseful. The setting (Shah Abbas Hotel, Isfahan, Iran) is nicely done, it's exotic, in the middle of nowhere and the hotel is deserted.
Atmospheric movie with lots of star power.
Nonetheless, for most of the time it feels a bit like a B-movie. The acting is not the best, only Oliver Reed shines.
But for fans of Agatha Christie it's a must-see. The stellar cast and the surprising conclusion of the movie makes it worthwhile.

Not in a good sense, he kills it.
A Schwarzenegger fan is not a Conan fan, I gave reasons why I prefer the Momoa version, Conan the Barbarian will never be anything close to an Oscar role. They have tried it with 007 and look at the last two dreary movies.
But neither gave me the phantasmagorical aspect I was seeking. Momoa's flick may not be perfect either, but I'm ready for a new take on it. Blu ray (2D) ordered.
I haven't seen it, but I feel like this review is 100% accurate.
What a cool time that was: the legend that is Arnold Schwarzenegger was brand new to the movie public and already knocking it out of the park
Plus: Rachel Nichols- the Orion Slave Girl from the 2009 Trek reboot!
Wasn't sure about this at first, but it won me over with its charm and sensitivity. The bittersweet ending actually left me feeling genuinely moved. Saoirse Ronan is an brilliant young actress and surely has a bright future ahead of her.

300 and 300: Rise of an Empire
I had these on my Netflix queue and I was interested in them because I like ancient Greece and mythology. 300 was pretty good and despite being so stylized for my taste, I didn't bother me as much and found it to be entertaining. I liked characters - although I wished they showed more of Xerxes who I found interesting, and the action was great. 300 Rise of an Empire was good. Again I liked the characters although Sullivan Stapleton didn't really have that presence that Gerald Butler had, but he worked fine. I liked that they fleshed out Xerxes more and was hoping to see more of him throughout the film, but surprise that they focused on Eva Green's character more who I thought was really great. She played evil good. The action was kind of repetitive, I mean, how many different ways can you fight on water, but hand to hand combat was pretty especially that last fight between Evan Green and Stapleton.

John English and Johnny English Reborn
I decided to watch these films after Calvin Dyson had done reviews on them although maybe I should have watched the films first and maybe I would have enjoyed them better. I mean, I still enjoyed. Definitely lots of fun and not having seen that many films with Rowan Atkinson, he certainly reminded me of the late Leslie Nielsen in his facial expressions, reactions to the things happening around, which I always found entertained in Nielsen films. These films feels a lot more British and spyish to me compare to the recent Bond films - maybe because London doesn't seen so dark or drab, the gadgets are really creative and man those cars - the Aston Martin from the 1st and Rolls Royce from Reborn were really slick. I almost hoped those cars were in Bond films (not sure if that version of Aston Martin was). It's funny that Robert Wade and Neil Purvis wrote the first one - I feel like they should do more of these instead of actual Bond films. Johnny English: B; Reborn: B
Olympus Has Fallen
Love these throwback 80s and 90s actions films cause they are so over the top and so much fun. Gerald Butler was great as this one man army, the action was good. The sets were great too, I really thought they filmed in from of the White House, but their recreation was pretty. Rick Yune was a better villian her than DAD. Only downside was the lousy CGI, it was pretty poor. Hopefully it will be better in London Has Fallen. B
Spy
Didn't get a chance to see this in the theater last year and continuing the comedy spy films, I found this one to very funny and the action was great. Jude Law would make a good Bond, Jason Statham was hilarious as was Melissa McCarthy. The locations were really cool - again I feel like the locations in the recent Bond films haven't been as classy. Overally, this movie was great fun. B+
Man of Steel
Finally getting ready for BvS, I rewatched MoS which I haven't seen since 2013. I watched it with commentary from the Collider Movie Talk guys and it was great. The first time I saw it I thought it was enjoyable, but I wasn't sure about Supes killing Zod and the massive destruction of Metropolis, there was too much action towards the end, and the way Johnathan Kent died. However, this time around I found myself tearing up like 3 times; seeing the constant struggle that the characters are going through - Clark being human vs alien, Zod's ideal to protect Krypton, etc.; the action on Krypton, in Smallville, the fight between Zod and Supes was great. I love the whole idea and effects of the world engine. I do wish we could have gotten rid of that 2nd world engine and have Supes saving more people, cut down the actions a little bit, and that cheesy line at the end ("he's so hot"). It's nice watching the movie this time around when I know Bruce Wayne is around during that whole destruction of Metroprolis, witnessing everything that's happening. I had ranked this movie 3rd after Superman II and Superman: The Movie, but it might just be tied for number 1. A-
BATMAN V SUPERMAN spoiler-free
First, you have to understand, I am a fan of Batman since I can remember, the first thing I read was Batman comics, it actually motivated me to learn to read and I was the first in Kindergarten that actually could read.
1989 (age 15) all my dreams came true in form of Batman The Movie. Since then it has been up and down, mostly up really. I even enjoyed Batman & Robin back then, it seemed right at that time to me.
Batman Begins again made all my dreams come true and it is my favourite movie of all time together with Star Trek First Contact and GoldenEye.
10 years after Batman Begins all my dreams were supposed to become true again in form of Batman V Superman.
You see, I'm also the biggest Justice League fan. Wonder Woman, The Martian and The Flash, especially The Flash are my favourite heroes besides Batsy.
Now I'm sitting here relaxed, sleepless, slightly drunk having lived through an emotional roller-coaster-ride that lasted for four hours.
We have movie breaks in Switzerland, after one hour there is a pause for people to go to the lobby have drinks and snacks or smoke or whatever.
When the pause sign went up on the screen I went to the lobby, to the bar and ordered a strong drink (vodka martini, yes.)
After the movie I felt like I was hit by a train.
I saw the best comic book movie ever.
I saw one of the worst comic book movies ever.
And it was the same movie. Batman V Superman.
All my dreams have come true tonight and all my nightmares as well.
Damn you Zac Snyder.

We like the breaks, it's like in the theatre, socialising and such.
Veteran (2015)
The latest badass action film from South Korea. Follows a tough-as-nail detective who will stop at nothing to bring down an untouchable 20-something years old millionaire involved in dubious activities.
Basically 2 hours of cat-and-mouse chase as the detective slowly unravels the scope of the evil organization, which cumulates in a final sequence of pure intense fighting, including a good dozen of henchmen getting their ass kicked all over the place. And I'm not counting the countless other low-level badguys who also got demolished in the previous 90 minutes.
If you enjoy this film, and I'm sure any fan of intense action films will, you'll be glad to know a sequel is already in the works, coming in 2017 or 2018.
Last night I continued with my Hitchcock revival, this time with a film that I have have had a difficult relationship with. I recently purchased the remastered blu ray.
Vertigo (1958)
I watched this film many years ago (I think I was still a teenager) and it didn't go down well at all. At the time, I found it extremely dull & boring. It dragged on a bit and seemed depressing to me. Rather sad, given this film recently won the British Film Institute's coveted title as the Greatest Film of All Time, surpassing perennial favourite Citizen Kane.
This time around things improved dramatically. The film is still a little on the slow side to me, compared to Hitch's other, more suspenseful pieces, but it fascinates in other ways.
The story basically focuses on a retired San Francisco detective, Scottie Ferguson, played by James Stewart, who suffers from acrophobia (fear of heights) due to a tragic incident which led to the death of a colleague. He is approached and hired to observe a wealthy college friend's wife, Madeleine (played coolly by a very much 'in her prime' Kim Novak). The friend believes Madeleine is possessed and may be suicidal. He complies with his friend's request to follow Madeleine, and soon develops intense feelings for her, after they meet after he saves her from a suicide attempt. Then a tragedy occurs, leading Ferguson to become an obsessed depressive. Even his 'on again, off again' friend Midge (played brilliantly by homely Barbara Bel Geddes - Miss Ellie from Dallas) can't get him out of his funk. A year later, Ferguson sees a woman no the street (Judy) who reminds him of Madeleine. I won't say more, but a major plot twist occurs shortly thereafter, and it's clear all is not as it seems.
The blu ray, as with some (not all) of the recently released efforts, is exceptional. The quality rivals North By Northwest, which is to say, it's as clear as the Lowry remastering of the Bond films. Colours are rich and sharp. Saul Bass's legendary title sequence is ahead of its time, and mesmerizing. This film also notably has the first use of the 'dolly zoom' camera effect, which I knew during childhood most famously from Michael Jackson's Thriller video.
This film has absolutely stunning cinematography, and shows San Francisco at its best. In fact, while watching it, I felt that Bond should return here (the city was done a terrible disservice in AVTAK imho, despite what fans of that film say).
There's something very surreal about this film. It's like a dream/ghost sequence in many instances. There are scenes and moments where Bernard Herrmann's magnificent score (almost classical in approach) and the wonderful sights pull you in, without any dialogue for extended periods. There are also many lonely sequences with no other people (extras) except Novak & Stewart on screen. Moreover, there is also conscious use of colour filters in specific scenes, particularly red and green. Does this remind you of something? Yes indeed, I was reminded of SP due to all these elements in use. Even the lead female character's name is Madeleine in both cases.
The film operates on two levels. There is the basic plot, which has its share of twists and turns, and then there are the overriding themes. Is Ferguson obsessed? Does his need to control and mold Madeline mirror Hitchcock's reported approach with his lead actresses (many of whom were blonde)? Is there a circular element to things? The spiral staircase. The 'man meets woman, man loses woman, man meets woman, man loses woman' element?
It's also amazing how many other films came to mind when I watched this one. Not only because of the use of San Francisco, but also because of acrophobia. Films as diverse as Final Analysis, to Bullitt, to In the Line of Fire, to Jade etc. etc.
Recommended, but it's not for everyone.
Man I forgot how funny this movie is. Tom Cruise was the highlight of the movie. His Les Grossman chracter is just hilarious. I'm still waiting on that movie to happen. The whole thing was great.
Standard teen Alien Invasion movie. Fairly predictable ( with a twist you can see coming a mile off)
