    The Offence (1973)

Finally watched this for the first time. Very good film with Sean Connery flexing his acting muscles in a role far away from Bond. He plays a detective who, after years of witnessing horrific crimes as a police officer, finally snaps after being left alone with a suspect of a particularly vile crime.

An unsettling, bleak film with intense performances all round. As well as Connery on excellent form there are also Ian Bannen and Trevor Howard (apparently an early Bond choice) who are both fantastic as the manipulative suspect and the troubled Lieutenant.

I'm sure most older Bond fans have seen this already, however for those who are younger on here I highly recommend it.

Be warned though, it's a heavy watch.

    8/10

Over the weekend I've watched Jurassic World (it was ok, fun enough but it wasn't anywhere near the quality of Jurassic Park. Also, to me, it didn't seem as if the cgi had improved much since the original and, at times, the original seemed much better).

Also watched Taken 3, the less said about that the better and I finished off by watching A Walk Among The Tombstones, which, if not much, was better than Taken 3.

I will half disagree concerning the Batman adaptations. If they had screwed things up for YEAR ONE and THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, I would have used your exact same argument: masterpieces on page, why take them to a different medium and bugger the quality down to the level of insult? However, seeing how well things turned out, I'm going to stand up for these adaptations. The voice work is incredible in both films, Christopher Drake's scores definitely are a blast, the animation is spot on, everything clicked! I'm even of the opinion that THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS does some things better than the original book. So except for the fact that Drake isn't scoring THE KILLING JOKE, I'm definitely superhyped for that one.

Spotlight- Great movie. I really didn't see any of the other contenders for best picture so I couldn't compare, but overall it was a really well made film.

We're the Millers- I still love this movie. Jason Sudekis is one of my favourite funny-men of this generation.

    Just Cause (1995)

I recently purchased the blu ray of this mid 90's thriller boasting an all star cast including Sean Connery, Kate Capshaw, Blair Underwood, Laurence Fishburne & Ed Harris.

Set in Florida, it tells the story of a Harvard law professor brought in to save a man on death row for the murder of a child. Sean Connery plays Paul Armstrong, the professor, and Blair Underwood plays Bobby Earl, the man convicted. Kate Capshaw plays Laurie, Paul's wife, who may have a connection to the convict. Laurence Fishburne has a great role as a tough cop.

I really enjoyed it. This is a typical 90's thriller, the likes of which they don't make too often any more (regrettably). It's a cross between Cape Fear, A Time To Kill & Silence of the Lambs. If you liked all of those films, then you'll probably enjoy this one.

There are no bad performances here. Connery is his usual scene stealing self, but there is also a particularly notable performance by Ed Harris (has he ever given a bad one?) as another convict in jail here.

When watching the film, I noticed something very familiar about the Connery character's 11 yr old daughter but I couldn't put my finger on it. Whoever the kid was, she had potential I thought, so I looked up the cast list, and lo and behold, it is a young Scarlett Johansson in one of her earliest roles. Her star power was evident even back then.

    Blood Diamond (2006)

This is one of my all time favorite films. DiCaprio is on fire in this film, a proper badass throughout the 2+ hour runtime. Djimoun Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly also lead this tremendous cast. The soundtrack is absolutely marvellous. The action scenes are tremendous, especially the attacks on Freetown and on the mine camp. Not one minute of wasted screentime, the near 2 hour and 30 minutes go by at a very quick pace. And it is a joy to see DiCaprio in such fine form (as in all his films, but this is probably my favorite performance of his).

    "Yah yah!"

I also love the bit where Solomon pretends to take him prisoner, just for him to gun the two guards down and take out the third, even though he's many, many yards out and running.

Not only that, he also fires an extra bullet in both those guys while walking past them before grabbing the machine gun to kill the 3rd fellow.

That's right, I forgot about that bit! Been too long since I've seen it, took a hiatus from it a few years back when I couldn't stop re-watching it. There's one thing I always wish was added to the end, as small (yet interesting) as it would've been:
Solomon leaves Danny at the top of the hill as he requests, since the latter knows he's going to die. Since he doesn't technically escape with the diamond - and even makes a comment earlier on about not smoking anymore if he makes it out - it would've been nice to see Danny break out one last cigarette after he gets off the sat phone and lights it up as he looks at the sunset and passes away.

I like this film. Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ray Liotta & Gene Hackman all give great performances.

I feed opinions through a highly complex cerebral filter taking into account film type and reviewer reactions to similar films with similar tones then run a sympatic algorithm to synthesize an 'objective' opinion of the opinion.
    Just sayin'.

Saw The Graduate (1967) for the first time. I can't even place my finger on it, but something about this film was really enjoyable. I'm not quite sure what. Though it's a very dated 60s film, I enjoyed the dated feeling. As Roger Ebert put it, "...to watch it today is like opening a time capsule."

    THE 5TH WAVE

    latest?cb=20160119161936

The following events took place between 10:00 AM and 10:02 AM this morning
girlfriend: I wanna go to the movies today.
Dimi: Yeah, I don't mind seeing Batman v Superman a third time.
girlfriend: I wanna see The 5th Wave.
Dimi: You can't be serious. A young adult adaptation? Aren't we a little old for th -
girlfriend: Sweetie, you watched The Phantom Menace for like the 100th time yesterday.
    Dimi: Touché, we're going.

So, THE 5TH WAVE (henceforth TFW) it was.
YA novels are doing well. Teens and adolescents eat these book series up like candy. They - mostly girls - go and watch Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Host, Divergent, The Maze Runner, ... in great numbers and drag their boyfriends with them. "Or else you'll be sleeping on the couch tonight!" But is that a bad thing? Not so long ago, mostly male adolescents went to see slasher films with barely clothed, sweaty girls running away from slasher killers while their royal bosoms are testing Newton's law of gravity. And they got their girlfriends to join, for aren't slashers the perfect date movies?

YA novels obviously target female audiences way more than the male variety. First of all, the lead character is almost always a girl. By the way, that's not a bad thing in my opinion. Female superheroes can't seem to get their own movie because many Hollywood bosses fear they alone can't bring in enough money. Female leads are of course perfectly normal in slasher films, but there they mostly serve other purposes than being a role model for brave teensters - stress on "mostly". Point is, I like the idea of really strong female characters in these YA films. From Katniss to TFW's Cassie - I'm deliberately forgetting about Bella - these girls take care of themselves. Sistas and all that.

Unfortunately, part of the appeal for girls is the omnipresent love triangle; the female lead is usually ping-ponging between two attractive boy-men who are quite different from one another (to bring in an even wider audience). Sadly, this Edward-Jacob or Peeta-Gale redo is part of TFW too. Hey, if it's a characteristic of the genre, I'm fine with it. I suppose it's the equivalent of the despicable drug using sex obsessed bully in a slasher film taking it first when the killer has arrived on stage.

Unlike The Hunger Games and Divergence, no neo-fascist future this time. Instead we have an alien invasion. And for the first part of the film, this plays out as a zombie plague adventure like The Walking Dead. The second part is more like a fusion of Edge Of Tomorrow and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers if you can believe it.

Amidst all of this not-at-all-original stuff, we find Chloë Grace Moretz. I must confess, I love Chloë. I think she's keeping her natural beauty without worrying about face lifts or extreme anorexia. Perhaps she's far too sweet, cute and polished to be dropped in the middle of an alien invasion survival film, but look, she can't do anything wrong in my book so I'm going to cut her some slack. There's also Liev Schreiber and Maria Bello but really, nobody cares.

So is the film any good? Look, it depends on whether or not you want to sleep on the couch tonight. If you can fight your way through tons of clichés, totally unconvincing love mechanisms, very obvious plot "twists" and mostly average acting performances, there's something of a moderately enjoyable film underneath. It's not bad, except if you want it to be. Trashing this film will be a walk in the park for the more sophisticated viewer. But I guess sophistication is simply not what was intended with TFW. Folks like me who like alien science fiction and tend to be very forgiving when it makes obvious mistakes, will enjoy this film as undemanding popcorn entertainment. Those with a tendency towards more cerebral stuff must . stay . away . from . this!

Glad to here you like those ones @Birdleson; your taste in movies is pretty good. Watching Rain Man (1988) now. Loving every moment of it so far; half-way through.
