Cruise and Hoffman are both excellent in it. It's simply an extremely good movie. I've been meaning to watch it for a long time, so I'm glad I finally got around to it. I'm glad Hoffman got the Oscar; he is perfect, but I have to say I think it's also the best performance I've seen from Cruise.

I'm thinking of embarking on another Kubrick-thon soon, now that I own all his movies. Talk about a genius filmmaker. Probably my second favorite film director.

I have only seen The Shining and 2001 (I have both on HD DVD)

The Kubrick Blu-ray collection is so damn expensive :(

I didn't even bother; just collected the individual DVDs, especially since the collection doesn't include some of his earlier, underrated works like The Killing and Paths of Glory. I do recommend you check out all his other movies though if you get the chance. Still, Kubrick films are not for everyone.

    Double feature

    Green Lantern
    Green Lantern: First Flight

Martin Campbell knows how to do a fantasy/action/adventure movie. Green Lantern sees Ryan Reynolds in the perfect role for him.
Personally I like this movie much more than most of the DC live action movies.

First Flight tells more or less the same story than the live action movie. It's very nice to watch them back to back and see how the animation/comic version was translated to the big screen by Campbell and the creative team behind the live action version.

Mark Strong shines as Sinestro and it's a shame we will not see him again in that role.
Ryan Reynolds has moved on to other things (Deadpool) and it proves how good a fit he is for such roles.

Green Lantern was great, except for Green Lantern himself.

Just got back from the cinema, after seeing '13 Hours' (2016).

Wow. One of the most intense films I've ever seen. Michael Bay's finest hour. 2 and a half hour of gut-wrenching tension. A lot of firefights and explosions, typical of Bay, but also so much more. Great acting from the entire cast, wonderfully filmed around the city of Benghazi. This could very well end up in my top 10 of 2016 once the year is over. Basically this is the new 'Black Hawk Down'.

I wanted to see that one. He's not one of my all-time favorite directors, but I do admire some of Ridley Scott's works. Blade Runner and Gladiator I like a lot.

I highly recommend it, If you liked Gravity then you'll enjoy this much much more.

I didn't like Gravity much actually... but here's hoping I still like The Martian :)) something about Gravity just didn't click for me. It was alright, but I was let down overall.

THE 400 BLOWS (Les quatre cents coups) (1959). My fiend and I are starting full Francois Truffaut retrospective, it will probably take us seven months to a year (we tend to be extremely comprehensive). What a great film. It's been well over a decade since I've seen this, the film that heralded the French New Wave.

Intense, intelligent and true. I can't find where this quote came form, but it stuck in my head long ago, a generalization, but so often true: European films are about children but made for adults, American films are about adults but made for children.

Brilliant movie. One of my favourite foreign movies.

I loved The Martian. It had a very Interstellar-Esque feel to it in which I loved that as well.

Agreed. The Martian is a top notch film. One of 2015's best. Even if you didn't like Gravity (and I didn't, outside of the special effects), you may like The Martian. No sap here, just good old fashioned storytelling about hope and resourcefulness.

I wanted to like The Martian, but it just didn't work for me. I agree it was better than Gravity, but that's not really saying much since Gravity was just pretty and had great sound design.

    Hail, Caesar!
Well... it wasn't bad... but it wasn't good, either. Considering the Coens, the Deakins and the cast, one was hoping for something more interesting, and not merely okay.
