The Deer Hunter (1978). Really crushing, but well-done film. Wouldn't see it again anytime soon though.

I walked out of the theatre back then feeling like I'd been hit with hammers. Not altogether in a good way.

    ;)

I enjoyed Plein soleil very much. In some ways it is better than the US remake from 1999 (The Talented Mr. Ripley). Alain Delon in particular is excellent in it.

Overall I still prefer the latter US production though, due to the excellent direction of the late Anthony Minghella, the superb cinematography, amazing cast and incredible score by Gabriel Yared. The film has a larger than life Bondian vibe to me, because of how expansive a production it is.

I think they really should remake all the Highsmith Ripley novels again with one actor imho.

PS: I also recommend Ripley's Game, starring John Malkovich as an older Ripley. Great score by Ennio Morricone in this film too.

I tried watching The Force Awakens for a second time just now on Blu Ray (the first was in the cinema), and... I couldn't get through it.
It's so good to see Han again, but knowing how the movie ends.... man, I just can't see that again.
I'll be right there for the next movie, and the one after, but this one just hurts too much. 8-|

It wouldn't hurt so much if it had not been done so stupidly. Solo's suicide trip just doesn't make any sense. It's stupid writing just to have the purpose to have one more element of the original SW in TFA.

I found it fitting that this SW started with a big loss, it does somehow fit in with the Skywalker family in which mothers and fathers have died because of the love they have for their partner and offspring. The circle and all of that with Solo's death, it does make sense.

I finally got around to watching The Force Awakens on Saturday. I enjoyed it, but wasn't overly impressed with it.

Just seen Midnight Special (2016) with Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst. The synopsis is a simple one, a father and son go on the run, pursued by the government and a cult drawn to the child's special powers. Is it any good? Yes, it's very absorbing and draws very heavily from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Starman. It's a still an enjoyable ride, despite those influences. If you're a fan of either of these two movies then you'll enjoy Midnight Special. To say anymore would giveaway way too much and I want to avoid spoilers. One of the best films I've seen so far this year.

The Europeans can have everything early, it's the extra two week, spoiler-dodging wait for Bond that always kills me.

I remember the old days, as close as the early 90s when we had to wait several months for certain American films to premiere here. Now it seems we have the premieres a week earlier more often than not, even for American films. How strange.

Taken 3 Starring Liam Neeson, Dougray Scott, Forrest Whittaker, and the delicious Famke Jansen! :x

Have to say i did enjoy it and thought Whittaker stole the show. He reminded me of Tommy Lee Jones as the US Marshall in the Fugitive movie.

I'm going to guess that it ended in a large, loud CGI battle with quick cuts and many explosions.
With lots of great characterizations & dialogue, but yeah, battles too.

I've been sick of superhero movies since 2013 now myself. The Killing Joke adaptation is the first thing I've been really looking forward to since The Dark Knight Rises (enjoyed the original Iron Man, meh on the sequels; Thor films were okay).

A Bridge Too Far I think it's a well directed film but sadly I found it a bit underwhelming.

Watching Time After Time (1979) for the first time. I'm overdue for a lighthearted feature, so this is perfect.

That was the deal at the time. I was in high school. The cast was hyped to an insane degree (probably the highest powered international cast before or since). Then... it bombed (compared to expectations), both critically and at the box office. I remember being pretty bored in the theatre.

Yes that's what hooked me in. My expectations were pretty high going in.

Saw it in the theatre a couple of times, then on VHS... a pleasant watch, to be sure.
San Fran, time travel, David Warner... the Trek connections abound!

It's very enjoyable. A shame Malcolm McDowell didn't have more quality films in his time. This is probably my second favorite after Clockwork Orange.
