OTHER THAN A Clockwork Orange, Time After Time, Star Trek Generations, does anyone have a recommendation for a good Malcolm McDowell film to watch? A lot of his work looks mediocre, so I want suggestions on a good one if I'm missing out.

If you have a strong stomach, Calligula will entertain. In one way or another....
But my favourite movie with Mr. McDowall is Blue Thunder!

    The Firm (1989)

Tv film starring a superb young Gary Oldman as the terrifying leader of a gang of football hooligans.

Royal Flash (1975) directed by Richard Lester from an adaptation of the second novel of George MacDonald Frasier's historical fiction series.

Those were the two I was going to name. And, as mentioned, CALIGULA.

    @Birdleson
FINALLY! Someone who has seen CALIGULA. I think this is one of the most outrageous yet perhaps for that reason alone also most accurate depictions of the first couple of decades since Augustus. Okay, and it's basically a porn movie. ;-) But McDowell plays the part with incredible stamina.

I've also seen CALIGULA (Uncut version) too, @DarthDimi. It's certainly not as bad as the critics had us believe at the time. And as you point out, McDowell is very good in it, and I agree it's probably the most accurate depictions of that time period to date. I can still picture that advancing Wall of Doom, the head chopping machine... ingenious.

@bondsum, Imagine my surprise at the age of 21 when my dad bought me the DVD saying it would be "just like Cleopatra, Spartacus, Ben-Hur and all those other swords-and-sandals films you like so much, son".

15 minutes into the movie, I wondered if my DAD was trying to make a point... like, I dunno, make out with your sister or anything. (I don't have sister, so that added to the confusion.)
I bet that made for some uncomfortable viewing with your dad, @DarthDimi.

I have to admit I'm not a great fan of Italian cinema, with the exception of Sergio Leone, Frank Capra and Bernardo Bertolucci, I'm pretty hard-pressed to name another director I like. I never saw what others saw in Federico Fellini, and Mario Bava was probably the best out of all the schlock horror makers IMHO. After seeing so many bad Italian movies I now tend to give most of their stuff a big swerve.

I'm probably more of a Spanish movie fan. I'll take anything from Álex de la Iglesia over anything Italian.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - another great movie in the series. Good stuff...

Actual production company was Penthouse? Um, okay. Terrible reviews (to put it mildly). Didn't sound very interesting, even with that cast. I'm afraid "great lesbian scenes" hold no interest for me, would probably be boring. On the other hand, Blue Is The Warmest Colour is actually supposed to be good. But reading of crew and cast accusing the director of harassment and breaking labour laws, and the experience of making the movie being horrible and very hard - some also quitting, others saying they'd never work with him again... Kinda put me off.

I, Claudius series I saw as a kid (hmm...) Can't really remember anything of it, and have no idea what I would think of it now. Interesting cast in that, too. Might check it out some day.

A good film, but I was really letdown by the typical Hollywood ending. Neeson is a BOSS!! ^:)^

I saw the R-rated version in the cinema. Quite a brutal movie. The porno bits I caught MUCH later online, and they really added nothing to the movie for me; there's much better porn out there IMO.

    JAWS 2

After seeing the Spielberg movie JAWS for the first time ever a couple of days ago I was really looking forward to seeing the sequel, for the first time as well.
I knew before, that it is regarded to be a far cry from the first one.

JAWS blew me away. A true cinephiles dream.

JAWS 2 was surprisingly very enjoyable. I have to say I will always watch both back to back in the future. Roy Scheider really brings it home.

Familiarity sets in right away. The same town, the same mayor, Brody's family.
The pacing maybe could be better. Some sequences drag on a bit, but after 75 minutes it becomes an edge-of-your-seat ride to the last minute.

Jaws death scene is bloody great. I really feel like barbeque right now ;)
I was wondering how the shark would meet its demise during the film and really couldn't see how Brody would pull it off.

It is obvious that it can't be compared to Spielberg's masterpiece. But I think it shouldn't even be compared.

To use Bond, I feel like Jaws is CR and Jaws 2 is QOS.
Both very entertaining, enjoyable movies, while the first one is a masterpiece and the second one is more about the mindless and fun action/terror.

The teenagers in danger being hunted down one after another is such a trite topic but I guess in 1978 it still was original. Nonetheless I enjoyed it very much even if that aspect might just be the weakest link in an otherwise quite good movie.

I'd go so far to say that JAWS 2 is a classic as well @chrisisall

I only knew Roy Scheider as Captain Nathan Bridger, one of my favourite characters on TV and TV-Show (even Season 3).

Next I will watch Blue Thunder which I just purchased in HD on iTunes :) because now I have to see more of Roy.
Blue Thunder is another classic right?

Oh, I'd call it a classic... yes. I think you'll like that one too. It's one that I've upgraded at every turn.

Speaking of Roy Scheider, one of his films that I've never seen but would like to is 52 Pick-Up (1986). Does anyone have any thoughts on this one?

I saw it when I managed a video store back when. It's definitely worth a look, but it's not the most pleasant flick Schneider was in...

We just finished Song Of The Sea. Enchanting movie. Used a couple of tissues. Highly recommended.

Saw it last month and I loved it. Loved that it was hand-painted, too. So much better than most animated movies Hollywood churns out. I dread to think what it would have ended up like if the director had agreed to make it "more commercial" like asked and what not... Probably would have ruined the movie.

    'The Nice Guys'

Just got back from the early preview screening! We got waved by security going in, I guess because we were seeing a movie prior to its official release date. Thankfully, I left my handful of marijuana and mass amounts of assault rifles and rocket launchers out in my friend's car. Movie was terrific, it was very detailed in showing off the 70's properly (I would assume), there are lots of details in the background, movie showtimes, particular stores, etc. that are featured that are a nice touch. Gosling and Crowe have amazing chemistry in this, and the laughter starts early and continues all throughout, it was fantastic. Thankfully, a lot of the scenes in the trailer, as great as they are, don't even show off the best scenes in the movie, which was great and added for a good surprise. The supporting cast was excellent in this, had a lot of actors appear that I really like. The action scenes, as well, were very well done, really enjoyed them. Can't say I have any standout complaints at all about this. Took me a little while to pick up on what was going on, maybe? I was so engrossed in the dialogue at times I wouldn't really pick up on key details that I should've remembered for later on, but it's a lot like 'Kiss Kiss Bang Bang' where you're quite lost a good ways throughout, and as more and more is unveiled, it all really makes sense and finally clicks at the end. Looking forward to inevitably picking this up on blu-ray and re-watching the hell out of it.

I haven't seen him in a lot, but Malcolm McDowell is still one of my favorite actors. He has a very unique charm about him, and he's always a lot fun to watch. For anyone who checked out the original Teen Titans show, remember him as Mad Mod? That was wonderful. Not in a lot of well known films, but he's left a legacy behind.

He does make 2007's Halloween a step above the average run of the mill remake.
(Plus he's an absolute RIOT on the outtakes!)

He was the one thing that helped me get through that film. Love the '78 original... could not stand the remake. But McDowell, as pretty much always, was great.

    Superman III.
I won't lie- there were moments when I considered turning it off. But Reeve is great & the film (and Annette) looks pretty.

It's a little on the trashy side, but still worth looking out for. And it also stars Ann-Margret... go and watch it.

Fruitvale Station. Excellent movie and masterfully directed. The director (Ryan Coogler) has a brilliant eye for visual story telling and capturing the rawness of emotions. He's not even 30 yet.
