The Hannibal TV series was probably the best attempt at showing a younger, free Hannibal. Mads Mikkelsen was excellent.

Much as the acting and the production of the series was excellent, I really couldn't get into the series.

There's only two Harris adaptations I like.

Manhunter is one of my favourite films and I like Silence of the Lambs with some reservations.

The Hannibal film was laughable. And Red Dragon was a waste of time.

I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 but I admit I stopped only a few episodes into season 2.

Even so, i still think it's better than most of the other portrayals of Lecter post-Lambs.

Hannibal was pretty daft but Julianne Moore was a good replacement of Jodie Foster and Gary Oldman was his usual brilliant self. The best aspect though was the haunting Vide Cor Meum opera track.

Doctor Strange - another excellent Marvel outing that dares to go places and yet does tell a more than decent story and Cumberbatch is just bloody brilliant and so is his supporting cast. Well worth a visit and the 3D for a change makes a difference in some excellent parts that are all about magic.

I was surprised too that the 3D was well worth it for once.

Has Doctor Strange already been released in the US?- If nobody can see it but us Europeans than it does make a one sided discussion so far.

I believe the film is due for release in three days in the US.
I'm always pleased when a film is released sooner over here.

Saw Inferno last night. @bondjames hit it right on the head. Decent enough flick, but lacked the spark that the first two had. But I'll give it a 3 1/2 out of 5.

Just finished watching Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder et al. Watched it with my two boys (aged 5 and 12) both loved it. I had forgotten how clever the dialogue was and how there was jokes for adults and kids alike!

Very great indeed. What I'll always remember Wilder best for.

Psycho (1960). Love love love this movie. My personal favorite of Hitchcock's impressive filmography, if not tied with Vertigo. Awfully close; love them both.

First on my Halloween Hitlist: Dracula (1958)

    0ADCAFFDBA.jpg

I don't really like horror movies a lot but I have made exceptions. This is one of them. RIP to Sir Lee for giving a killer performance despite only having talked for the first 5 minutes of the movie. And I must say Peter Cushing and Michael Gough (AKA Alfred Pennyworth) also gave quite the show

A good film worth watching, even for a mostly non-horror fan like me.

    Next on my hitlist:
I shall visit a certain Doctor they only call Phibes.

Halloween Hitlist, Part II: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

    maxresdefault.jpg

Stylish, sick, and suspenseful. This is all I can say about the movie. Creepy as it is, the sets make it so stylish at the same time. These are the horror movies I want. And I must say, Joseph Cotton really impressed me, perhaps 'cause of his weird American-ish accent (which, while out of place, is amusing).

Then there's the good doctor himself. This guy really knows how to be prepared. And his taste in clothing and cars is impeccable.

    And coming soon...

    MANIAC

    maniac_uk.jpg

    William Lustig's MANIAC (1980)

    maniac-01.jpg

Joe Spinell plays Frank Zito in MANIAC, an ultra-low-budget psycho film that captures the best elements of 70s horror and still, at the end of the decade, does something relatively fresh with them. Spinell, ugly as hell yet cuddly in a very weird way, has a nasty tendency for - well - slaughtering people. But when he meets Caroline Munro, he may have finally found his cure... until things prove less romantic than he thought and so the knife returns back on stage...

"I told you not to go out tonight!" Crawling inside the head of a deranged killer is something many filmmakers have tried before but only few have succeeded at doing. Lustig, and even more so Spinell, definitely make it happen. The guerilla style shooting of almost half the film gives it a quality that strangely enhances the power of the killing motif. We are practically told to feel ashamed and dirty because through the POVs we're holding the knife as much as Zito himself. At least in that way, MANIAC can compete with the likes of PSYCHO and the later HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER.

Exploitative and cheap, here's a film that does what it set out to do: have us descend into the same madness as our titular maniac. Recommended.

    Franck Khalfoun's MANIAC (2012)

    Maniac%2B-%2BFrank%2B2.png

I'm probably expected to talk about how you don't make a sequel to a classic and how this PC era is incapable of giving us the same horror beats as the original, but I'm not going to. The remake of MANIAC does an excellent job of finding what worked in the Lustig film and lifting it to new levels. Told almost completely through Wood's eyes so to speak, we're even more intimately involved than ever before. The French Nora Arnezeder is astonishingly beautiful. To have her paired with the disturbed Frank Zito of this film, is almost a heinous crime in and by itself.

In 2012 I was very much surprised to find that MANIAC and MANIAC are of the same quality, even if they bring a slightly different style to the game. Another recommend.

Halloween Hitlist Finale: Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)

    again1.jpg

Campier than its predecessor, sure. But it's still spine-tingling and suspenseful where it needs to be. Price and Quarry make an admirable on-screen rivalry - even though it only lasted as the tail-end of the climax.

And of course, perhaps the most oddly appropriate and satisfying usage of the classic song...

    Rush,

Watched again last night, still love this movie, Directed very well on a very small budget. Over time, some of the dialogue has become clunky. There is a lack of detail in portraying both their characters but it is hard within the time period they had. Such a shame it did not do better at the global box office but I suspect it was a personal project for the director rather than a money making exercise.

    THE WICKER MAN (1973)

    the-wicker-man-4.jpg

Pagan horror is a special brand but if there's one thing in the genre you've got to watch, it's the 1973 film THE WICKER MAN. Just promise me to stay away from that awful remake, pu-lease!

Trapped on an island which has special plans for him, Sgt. Howie cannot possibly have foreseen the many dangers he voluntarily exposes himself to. Will Christopher Lee's Lord Summerisle manage to outsmart him?

Of course most (male) eyes are focused on the lovely Britt Ekland, especially during her nocturnal dance which, I must admit, is absolutely arousing.

    Great film. Recommended.

    Happy Halloween, all!

Going to rewatch The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) tonight; love that movie. Here was what I watched for my October "31 Days of Horror" marathon (note not all are necessarily horror, but are October/Halloween themed enough):

    October 1 - Dracula (1958)
    October 2 - Mama (2013)
    October 3 - Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)
    October 4 - The Thing (1982)
    October 5 - Repulsion (1965)
    October 6 - The Ring (2002)
October 7 - The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
    October 8 - Paranormal Activity (2007)
    October 9 - Secret Window (2004)
    October 10 - The Exorcist (1973)
    October 11 - Corpse Bride (2005)
    October 12 - Halloween (1978)
    October 13 - Friday the 13th (1980)
October 14 - A Nightmare on Elm Street
    October 15 - What Lies Beneath (2000)
    October 16 - The Sixth Sense (1999)
    October 17 - It Follows (2014)
    October 18 - Scream (1996)
    October 19 - Monster House (2006)
    October 20 - The Others (2001)
    October 21 - Shutter Island (2010)
    October 22 - Poltergeist (1982)
    October 23 - Jaws (1975)
    October 24 - The Birds (1963)
    October 25 - Signs (2002)
    October 26 - The Shining (1980)
    October 27 - Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers (1987)
    October 28 - Alien (1979)
    October 29 - Sleepy Hollow (1999)
    October 30 - Psycho (1960)
October 31 - The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Some of the biggest highlights include The Thing (just one of my favorite horror movies), The Exorcist (first watch!), Halloween (again, a favorite), The Sixth Sense (had a particularly great viewing this time), Jaws (a favorite), The Shining (my favorite horror film - and I saw it in the theater!), Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers (so hilarious), and Psycho (once more - a favorite). Very exhausting, but fun marathon!

It's been a year since I saw this on TV, but I still can say that this is nothing less than the finest movie ever made. The epic battle scenes, the acting, the cinematography, it all falls into place. Special props to Tatsuya Nakadai as Shingen and the Double, where he's a charming warlord one scene, and a reluctant charlatan the next (and oftentimes, in the same shot).

The only weak link here, is the soundtrack. Someone said that it isn't exactly bad, it's just subpar when compared to the other Kurosawa scores (Ran included). That I can agree with. But it's pretty OK by itself.

  • @IncompetentHenchman - Will you be watching all of the films, or just the first few?

    @MajorDSmythe
Haha I'm not sure at the moment but I hope to watch all of them eventually. But I hear the first few are the best anyway.

Most of my favourites are the later films. Pt 3 & 4, then all of the films, with the exception of Freddy vs Jason, from Jason Lives through to the reboot.

    I'll keep that in mind.
