I forgot to bold those titles to make it look more serous.
  • West Side Story. A real piece of art with a god-awful pair of protagonists: Natalie Wood looks dumb but she makes a nice ending scene, capturing the desired theatrical flair of the film. But Richard Beymer, for all sake, is atrocious. And he knows.
However, the secondary cast is brilliant, the dance scenes are highly influential and the visuals are stunning. Obviously the best part of the whole thing is the music... But I hate "Somewhere". I even dislike the Pet Shop Boys version, and I just dig Tennant and Love!

Director's Cut, the same applies to Alien and Aliens.

Though not really a 'director's cut' that version is head-and-shoulders above the theatrical release. Oh, what could have been…

    THE BATMAN VS DRACULA 2005

Ok, here it comes. Sue me, but THE BATMAN is my favourite Batman animated show. I watched the first season in one take I couldn't believe how awesome it is. I didn't sleep much in that night but boy was I walking on air the next day. Ten years later I still love it. Totally.
Batsy vs Alucard is awesome, I wanted to rank it above PHANTASM but hey, it's sacrilege I guess.
I even got the toys to the movie. ...and you are dust. BANG.

    SUPERMAN BRAINIAC ATTACKS 2006

I admit I never cared much for Superman The Animated Series although I do own it and watched it more than once. It's still DCAU and it's all good. Brainiac Attacks feels little more than a lengthy episode of the TV Show. It's ok but a bit of a bore.

    SUPERMAN DOOMSDAY 2007

This Superman movie I like much better. The way Lex handles Supes here is mean and cruel and I get emotionally involved when watching this. I must say this is really better than the Supesless crap we got in BvS.

next on: JUSTICE LEAGUE NEW FRONTIER

    My ranking so far:

1 BATMAN BEYOND RETURN OF THE JOKER - bloody great
2 BATMAN MASK OF THE PHANTASM - bloody great
3 THE BATMAN VS DRACULA - bloody (literally) great
4 BATMAN & MR FREEZE SUBZERO - good
    5 SUPERMAN DOOMSDAY - good
6 BATMAN MYSTERY OF THE BATWOMAN - okayish
7 SUPERMAN BRAINIAC ATTACKS - okayish

We just watched Star Trek Beyond, and boy did I enjoy the Hell out of this movie. Given the dopey givens (Spock in love with Uhura/ Enterprise blowing up AGAIN) it made the most of it. Simon Pegg *gets* Trek, and he did a fine job of it IMHO. Yeah, too much action, but that's expected in today's films. Low expectations certainly helped after the last two movies.
I'd be up for another, but Anton will be missed... 8-|

Starring Robert Ryan and a 21 year old Janet Leigh :x
    Liked it very much.

I should watch this one again. Great Robert Ryan noir!

Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning
Boggles my mind why some people have claimed this is the worst one? The general quality of this film actually blows the others out of the water. I could find some faults - I found a few characters annoying and underdeveloped - but the psychological development of Tommy (actually acted very well) the film is highly intriguing. Still not that scary, but very adept in what it does, with some unique kills. The ending twist did not bother me. Finally Manfriedi turns in a competent score that is not all rehashed from the first movie too!!! Brilliant!

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Definitely the best of the franchise. Perfectly balances entertainment, fun, humour, juvenile thrills and extravagance. Easily sustains its 87 minute running time with a plot that doesn't waste your time and moves quickly from beat to beat without disengaging you like some of the previous films. At last, here is the definitive Jason Voorhees - whilst some may respect the more human and more realistic Jason, I must admit I prefer this almost cartoonish, yet far more appealing and endearing slasher antihero: the man with the hockey mask, impervious and invulnerable to bullets, slow to move yet always catches up with his prey; silent, deadly.

All the kills were fun, brilliant, and understood the concept of build-up and were not excessive. Some moments just took my breath away - Jason putting on the hockey mask upon his revival and standing with the burnt lightning rod as his new weapon; Jason climbing out of and standing on the overturned truck as it catches fire; Jason finally returning to Crystal Lake to affirm his territory; and of course the final confrontation on the lake.

The film understands basic story structure and wraps it all up within a short space of time. The only problem is that some beats are a bit clouded or run over too quickly. Tommy's relationship with the sherriff's daughter is not one that I completely buy, nor am I convinced entirely by the opening revival of Jason or the need to seal him in the lake. And I'm afraid I do prefer Tommy's previous actor. But we forgive these minor contrivances for the sake of enjoying this fun B-movie slasher romp. Great stuff!

That's my favorite as well @IncompetentHenchman ! That movie has the correct amount of humor/horror to make it FUN.

I look forward to hearing what you think of Part VII.
That's an interesting one- Jason absolutely looks his best, however the gore is practically PG (the studios did some slashing of their own).
It does have the best opening out of all of them- it really sets the tone and is very creepy. Also it's narrated by 'Crazy Ralph' himself!
"There's a legend 'round here... a killer buried.... but not dead." "People keep forgetting: he's out there."
    Goosebumps! =P~

Some fun trivia: this was originally supposed to be Freddy vs Jason, a good 15+ years before the one we actually got. Many of the supernatural elements were carried over from the script, and we ended up with Tina! Or as some call her, 'Carrie Lite' ;)

It's the twist of A New Beginning, that puts me off from wanting to see it again. Jason Lives not only puts the series back onto an even keel (imo), but it also kicks off the undead Jason era. My favourite film (and final girl) of the series lies just around the corner.

With all the bogus going around us right now, movies continue to be a wonderful escape for me. In the midst of last night's darkness, I managed to still enjoy a movie. I really am passionate about them, and sincerely believe they're as effective a form of art as anything else.

Thanks @Master_Dahark and @MajorDSmythe! Good to see lots of appreciation for Jason Lives.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
I am a little divided on this one. Whilst the series previously had made questionable moves - certain gaps in logic here and there - I feel this is the first to be defined by a true 'gimmick'. I like Tina as a character but I'm not sure I'm sold completely on the bizarre nature of her psychic powers.

It's still easy to enjoy - nice setup with Jason's revival. As previously pointed out much of the gore is PG and is over quite quickly. However, that does little to detract from them - earlier films would build very little suspense around their killings and make the deaths far more perfunctory. That sleeping bag kill, for example, is highly effective even though it is very short. The score is an appreciable output for the most part - the help of a new composer adds new style; that Christmas carol sound used as Tina's theme is very endearing.

The final showdown is probably the best part of the film. But damned if Jason's defeat isn't rather abrupt and bizarre?

    7/10

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
I believe this the first real misstep since Part Three. Essentially, it is a problem of excess - a few too many kills and not enough focus. Jason's revival seems artificial and very perfunctory. And I was very annoyed by the stupidity of some of the characters; as the survivors arrive in New York, knowing Jason is behind them, they decide the wisest course of action is to split up?! Seriously?

I have heard people say that the film takes far too long to make it to Manhattan. Perhaps. The Manhattan sequence is rather dull anyway until they are running down the subway and eluding Jason. I say 'they' because this time I really, really, really was not invested in the characters at all. I get it's a slasher but we have to have someone to care the smallest iota for.

Saved partially by a good sense of humour here and there and some rather good kills (special mention to the disco death). Then becomes irredeemable for its ending in the sewers of New York. What an underwhelming and embarrassing climax...

Oh, and Jason teleports way too much in this movie.

I love The New Blood. Tina, my favourite final girl of the series*. Kane Hodder as Jason, and his look in this film. But that ending doesn't quite site right with me. Though unlike the end of A New Beginning, it isn't bad enough that it puts me of from re-watching the film.

*If there was going to be a new sequel to the original series, and one of the final girls were to be brought back, Lar Park Lincoln as Tina would be my choice.

Did anyone notice the Bond homage at the beginning Jason Lives?
  • @Master_Dahark, there actually is an official sequel to the original Django, but it's heavily panned by the fans and critics alike. That also said, a third film, set in the original Django timeline, with Franco Nero set to reprise his role, is also in the works.
Ha ha yeah I watched the trailer for the sequel and it looked hilariously bad. Between that and other gems like Enter the Ninja, it would appear ol' Franco should have used better judgement in the 80's. It wasn't until Django Unchained that I had even heard of him!
He should have been a much bigger star! Shame.

I didn't hear about the new sequel- thanks for letting me know!

You know, I like Django so much, that I bought it recently-- only I opted for the out of print two-pack! This includes Django Strikes Again!

    51TMSFM87QL.jpg

It..... wasn't that bad. I admired their gamble to go for a vastly different tone (Django had become a peace loving monk) and I enjoyed the first half hour or so- his first appearance all the way up to the graveyard scene was very cool. The only trouble was, the movie was BORING.
It also threw me off a bit hearing Nero's actual voice. In the original Django he was dubbed with a 'standard issue hero' voice, but here he sounds like Dracula, lol.

And look at that cover.... where have I seen it before.... OH YEAH

    15051209075115263613259366.jpg

Just like the NES Metal Gear cover art was just a retouched photo of Reese from The Terminator, they did the same thing for ol' Django.

I'd recommend the first movie, but not this one. It's a complete bore.

Agreed. However, @Master_Dahark, you might want to try the unofficial remake of Django that arrived two years after the original. It's the only unofficial "sequel" that uses Django's name for the main character properly and stays true to the character's outline, unlike the others.

It's called Django, Prepare A Coffin! (1968) starring Terence Hill as Django. It's totally a remake but with better action, more excitement with the feel of a proper Spaghetti Western. The theme tune is awesome too!
