The Witch (or should it be The VVitch)
I... it just didn't click with me. I watched it not expecting anything, really. Maybe I need to see it again. Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson gave the standout performances.

One of the more overrated horror films I've seen in years. Nothing clicked with me, either, failed to see what was so special and haunting about it. The likes of 'The Wailing' and 'Train to Busan' were infinitely better last year, along with 'Green Room' and 'Don't Breathe.' Another overhyped one that I was sadly disappointed in was 'Under the Shadow.' Pretty lackluster and hardly scary.

100% on the same page as you two. Zero scare factor. This was a period film that wanted so badly to be a horror film, but wasn't, and so it had pretty much nothing to offer apart fom a couple earnest performances.

The wrath of Khan - Star Trek 2 or better know as the most brilliant movie from the TOS crew with great chemistry between the cast, awesome music, incredible effects, and the movie is just about perfect. For me there has never been a movie that bettered this one, almost perfection. And it started the Genesis trilogy which are three movies that tell one big story about the TOS crew and their journey in friendship and trust. The chemistry between the original crew is never bettered in any of the movies or series. Looks pretty good in BD too.

Yes, there was a lot of hype surrounding The VVitch, though i'm not entirely sure why. However, I do think that Anya Taylor-Joy (who appears quite content to work in horror), is certainly a star on the rise. Don't Breathe is another horror film that I need to get around to seeing. There's a few that have passed me by, I need to catch up.

I think it's fair to say The VVitch sits on the fringe of the horror genre, right on the edge.

What do I say about this funny charming film it's just a really good solid piece of work and is there a film where Dame Judi Dench isn't a bad ass

    Chinatown (1974)
    NTEBUFu.jpg

This was my first full watch of this film noir classic, set in the 1930’s & directed by Roman Polanski (his last film while still on US soil). It stars Jack Nicholsan, Faye Dunaway and John Huston. The film follows Nicolsan’s P.I Jake Gittes as he gets drawn into seedy Los Angeles corruption at the highest (or lowest, depending on how one looks at it) levels. The film turns a few genre norms on their head. For instance, Dunaway plays an atypical femme fatale. Her character, Evelyn Murway, is more humane & sincere than is normally the case in these type of films. Jake also has both a moral code & a pugnacious demeanour that is somewhat uncommon for a film P.I. and this is slowly revealed as he is tested by his discoveries. He is far from apathetic. Huston (who directed the Maltese Falcon, and hence is very familiar with this genre) is the villain of the piece & imbues his Noah Cross (coincidentally Evelyn’s father) with the right dose of sickening depravity.

The film has incredible atmosphere, and almost glistens in some scenes in the California sun. This is another instance where it inverts the normal dark ‘noir’ elements. Jerry Goldsmith’s ethereal score is pitch perfect, the script & production design are outstanding, and I can see this film’s influence in many movies, including L.A. Confidential & Palmetto. It has quite a depressing ending, but that only serves to drive home its point about the level of malfeasance in the city.

I once saw a portion of this film with my father as a child, and was hardly impressed. In fact, I think I left half way through, being bored out of my skull. So I approached it today with some trepidation. I did enjoy it far more this time around, but understand why I couldn’t stand it before. The pace is quite leisurely by today’s standards. PS: It also stars DAF Alum Bruce Glover (Mr. Wint) and John Hillerman (Higgins from Magnum PI) in small roles.

One of my all-time favorite films, with few in competition in it. And undoubtedly one of the greatest scripts ever written for a film.

Chinatown Is an amazing film with creative direction and atmosphere Hitchcock would be proud of, there was a sequel called The Two Jakes 1990 directed by Jack Nicholson it's not of the same quality though has its moments. Also it's a interesting look at the Jake Gettis character several years later.

Yes, The Two Jakes is great watching if you want to view how both LA and Gittes have developed over time, and in the same token, how they haven't changed.

Zootropolis (aka Zootopia) I don't tend to watch animated films in fact I usually avoid them, saw this crop up on Sky Movies with a five star rating and universal excellent reviews. This film is brilliant incredibly smart with great observations.

Inception (2010) again; wouldn't normally watch it twice this close together, but I had to watch it again for my Nolan thon. I must say it's definitely a film that improves with more watches. I didn't care for it much the first time I saw it, but more recently I have really enjoyed it. A solid picture from Nolan.

Another entrancing, disturbing and well crafted film by the great Korean director Chan-Wook Park.

I keep hearing good things about that, might have to check it out.

    Miami Vice (2006)

Horribly underrated and misunderstood. This is pure Mann. Stunning digital photography, a great soundtrack and slick directing.

The location work on this is second to none and really evokes the sweaty nervous South American underworld.

Mann's set pieces are all very memorable and the performances are all good. Special mention to John Ortiz as Yero. A real slimeball of a character.

    I find I watch this a lot.

I have to agree with you on this. I think the beginning of the 21st Century for movies will be remembered for hyperbolic sensationalism. I thought it was a nice homage to H.P. Lovecraft. Other than that, I much preferred Source Code as hard sci-fi material.

Agreed. I must update the other thread on biggest disappointments I've had in a theatre. I actually nodded off and was awoken by another viewer leaving to visit the toilet!

    National Lampoon's Vacation

I just don't find Chevy Chase all that funny nor do I find the Lampoon series all that good. It's not horrible mind you but it's not mind blowing either.

Was shockingly let down by this one, as well. That first teaser sold me, but I found the finished film, while being rather unique and putting a fun twist on the whole "Aliens have come to visit" angle, it was pretty forgettable, and you could seem to summarize the entirety of the film's events in a matter of seconds.

Hilarious yet disgusting. Slapstick meets bloodiest zombie film I can remember.

This sounds so familiar, I'm certain I've seen it at some point in time...is there a lawnmower scene in this? It was a scene involving the main character running over a bunch of zombies in gory fashion, or something to that effect.

Yep, it is the same movie. Directed by Peter Jackson, before his move to hollywood pictures / LotR and Hobbit.

If you like Brain Dead (Dead Alive) you 'might' like Bad Taste.
Made a few years earlier, when Jackson had even less money to work with, but it's the same type of movie.
It was a bunch of his friends (and even Jackson himself) play acting with 0 budget. I suppose you could call it Jackson's 'Evil Dead' in a way.

His character in Bad Taste was insane(ly) hilarious. Best actor of the film for sure.

Just double billed Deadpool (2016) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).

Now that was really awesome. Ryan Reynolds is a proper badass as Deadpool, and he has a ton of brutal kills. The soundtrack is stunning, a lot of humour, a big dose of fun and many insane action scenes. As for 'Winter Soldier', Chris Evans is probably my favorite main actor in the MCU, what a total legend. And this film really has a lot of epic action scenes (the boat assault, the convoy assault on Sam Jackson, the highway fight/shootout, the elevator fight).

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004). Hits the spot if you're looking for pure cartoonish escapism and craziness. Though it doesn't always reach the highs of the original 3 SpongeBob seasons (which are the good ones), it's still a decent send-off for the once-great cartoon. Sad how bad the show has become.

    The Hateful Eight.

I enjoyed this one more than Django Unchained. Definitely one of Tarantino's better films in my opinion.
