    Batman Returns

It was on TV last night, and I'd watched the 1989 Batman on DVD not long before, and I hadn't seen it in years so I thought I'd give it a watch. Not bad at all. Keaton is still my favourite Batman and I still like Gotham in the Burton films better than in any of the other Batman films. But sometimes, like @Brady said in his review, it gets really crazy and too Burton-like.

I was suprised to see how brutal he was. There was one fight scene where he shoved dynamite onto a thug and threw him into a pit, followed by an explosion, I was thinking "did Batman actually just kill somebody?"

Anyway, I also like catwoman, she's hot and entertaining. Danny Devitto is brilliant as penguin, my 2nd favourite Batman villian after Ledgers joker. Walken is also great. There's some good action and I also like the story. I really enjoyed this, I liked it more than the original Batman film.

    8/10

I'm glad to see you gave my review a look. I love talking over Batman just as much as Bond. I agree with everything you said, especially the whole absence of moral qualms Bats has for killing, as I have stated several times to be my major gripe with the Burton films. Nonetheless, a very great film. Which do you prefer, this or the 89 Burton?

@0BradyM0Bondfanatic7 I think I prefer Returns, because Keaton is more confident as Batman, catwoman is great and I prefer DeVito's penguin to Nicholson's Joker

Exactly my feelings. Improvements literally all around. And how awesome was the scene where
Bruce and Selina are dancing and expose their secrets through dialogue they shared unknowingly as Batman and Catwoman?
A very clever scene, and by far my favorite moment in either film.

Haha, that is a good one! Which Burton do you prefer @Dimi? You are quite the big Batman fan as well.

I will admit to favouring Batman 89. It may sound as a cliché but I simply can't resist the Joker. Also, I think Burton's vaudeville style is more apparent in Returns and I'm just not a big fan of that. Batman 89 features a Gotham that feels to me like a 1930s Chicago mixed with a 1950s New York. You have the dressed up mobsters and the great buildings. I love it. Even Elfman's score feels darker and more superhero-ish to me. Returns is more like Burton's fairy tale land. A devious circus gang, the whole Christmas mood, ... I'm just not a fan of that. And Elfman's score for Returns, while still good, has too many jingles playing for my liking. That said, the shrill violins mimicking cat cries are pure awesomeness.

My *current* ranking of the theatrically released Batman films:

    1) The Dark Knight
    2) Batman Begins
    3) Batman 89
    4) Mask Of The Phantasm
    5) Batman 66
    6) Batman Returns
    7) Batman and Robin
    8) Batman Forever

My favourite bit in Returns was the whole riot sequence, with Catwoman robbing the shop and Batman beating everybody up outside.

Too bad Amber likes the girls. Shame for all hopeful mean around the world.

@Dimi, how do you like Batman and Robin more than Forever?! Granted they are both abortive, but come on now...
  • Amber is in cahoots with Jonny Depp at the mo and caused his divorce - so she is bi-curious...but not curious about me. :-((

At least Batman and Robin was in on the joke. Honestly, it's so laugh-out bad, I'm actually having something of a good time. B4Ever is just... not good.

I can see where you are coming from. B&R just comes off as garbage, while B4EVER tries to go the serious road. Neither work regardless.

    Batman Begins 4/5

This is a fine introductory film but this nowhere near the level of TDK although I've not seen TDKR yet I'm pretty sure this will be the weakest of the three but many trilogy's don't even get one film the same quality of Begins. Dark Knight tomorrow night been a few years I can't wait!

Halfway through TDK now, and I always love ever minute of this film. It's pretty cool that:
If you had a very keen eye in the theaters, you would know the twist on the funeral ceremony scene, because you can see The Joker out-of-makeup before they actually show him.

    Bring It On

It has been called the Citizen Kane of cheerleader films. :)>-

Okay, I know this is a 'stupid' film but man, do I love it! Call it guilty pleasure, I don't care, but I find myself having a good time. And Eliza Dushku was a looker back in 2000 (she still is btw). ;-)

I think this and DHRFTG make up a saggy middle section of the Hammer: Dracula series. They're not bad as such, they just feel run of the mill. Seeing the little club that Hargood, Paxton & Secker attend, reminds me of the shennanigans that go on in the Mod Tea Rooms. :-\"

    Hammer Horror Dracula Films:
    1. Horror Of Dracula (1958)
    2. Dracula: Prince Of Darkness (1966)
    3. Brides Of Dracula (1960)
    4. Taste The Blood Of Dracula (1970)
    5. Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1968)

I firmly agree but then I love the Captain America storyline and the aesthetics of the film a whole lot more than I do Thor's. I think we need the Thor film as a set-up for Avengers but I'm not excited for a Thor sequel as much as I am for a Cap one.

Just watched The Longest Day (1962), about the Invasion of Normandy in WW2, after meaning to for a long time. Sean Connery and Gert Fröbe appear, the first time Bond and Goldfinger went up against each other (no scenes together, both small parts).

Instantly become one of my favourite WW2 films. Loved that it had Allied, German and French Resistance perspectives, but I wish there had been more French Resistance parts. Giving it a 9/10.

Can anyone recommend me any films about the French resistance in WW2?

After telling myself I must, over the last four days I watched all three The Lord of the Rings films. Really, for the first time since they came out. Boy they are great and I can't wait for The Hobbit, whether that be in two or three parts.

Don't worry; I hadn't seen a single one until my friend forced me to watch them all straight through last year, and they were very entertaining. I, too, am really anticipating 'The Hobbit' now. The last I heard, I believe they are looking at three films now, instead of the original two.

Now that's better. Bonus points to the film for the casting of my 2nd favourite Doctor, the 2nd Doctor himself, Patrick Troughton as Dracula's servant, Klove.

If they go for three, they'll need to announce it soon. Jackson said he would like to film up to an extra six weeks of footage so maybe three films are are on the cards? Also they'll need another title for the new one.
