Glad you liked it @Thunderfinger. It was blasted by the critics but I loved it.

Why was it blasted? Remember any particular criticism?

If I recall correctly it had to do with Pratt's character's decision to unlock a chamber. Apparently the talking heads weren't satisfied that the film properly delved into the far reaching philosophical implications of that decision, and thought it was resolved too simplistically. Bottom line is I think they were looking for something a bit deeper than what we got, or maybe they just wanted to have a go at the two hottest stars in the market.

This is Pratt and Lawrence for pete's sake! It's only going to be so deep.

I was surprised by how #deep# it actually was. It has a lot going for it, enough to keep you engaged. Humour, romance, drama and a bit of moral/philosophy thrown in. On paper, it sounds just dull, but it was very well done.

I've heard that too. I know someone who said they wouldn't watch the film because they were disgusted by what they read in the reviews. I tried to explain it was handled with some degree of depth, shedding light on different facets of an impossible and ultimately regrettable choice. To no avail.

The film was very Hollywood. That's my one criticism. But at the same time, I realize that's the film they were making.

Not among the best films I have seen, but time well spent.
  • Indeed. A refreshing amount of non-Hollywood in a very Hollywood film.

All the comedy is in the first part, when Pratt is alone.

I thought Passengers was decent for sure. Not a favorite, but I liked it alright.

    JEEPERS CREEPERS 1 & 2

    latest?cb=20131028110301

With a third Jeepers Creepers coming out real soon, I wanted to give these two favourites of mine another go. Had a good time too, with Justin Long in the first movie and Ray Wise in the second. I love the concept of the Creeper and I can't wait for the third film.

Just finished Rear Window (1954). Such a fantastic movie, and possibly my Hitchcock favourite, if you ask me. Every time I watch it, I can't help being amazed by that enormous courtyard set. Such attention to detail!

Chose to watch Rear Window over Strangers on a Train, which I have a copy of, by have never seen. How does it compare to the former?

I definetly prefer Rear Window (my #7 movie of all time), but Strangers on a Train is also great stuff (in my top 100 aswell). It features a brilliant and chilling performance from Robert Walker.

Noted! How is Farley Granger in Strangers on a Train? I remember him from The Rope, another brilliant Hitchcock-film.

Alright i guess, i am not too crazy about him. He gets totally overshadowed by Walker.

Update! Just finished Strangers on a Train and, as with every Hitchcock film I've seen, it did not disappoint! Not the same quality as Rear Window, but it has the suspense which Hitchcock does so well. Loved the fairground finale. Who'd thought a merry-go-round could be so exciting?

As you mentioned, Walker was the stand out performance of the film. Brilliant piece of acting.

Glad you liked it! And i was thinking about mentioning the great fairground finale, but didn't want to spoil anything for you. :)

    Dunkirk (2017)
Managed to see a showing in 70mm, and I would recommend anyone who hasn't seen it yet, to seek one out as it does make a big difference! (The lady three seats up from me kept jumping out of her skin at every gunshot early on!)
Verdict. Yes I did enjoy it, beautifully filmed and lensed, but it did leave me a little cold. or maybe that was the intention. Nolan didn't want individuals concentrated on, but I think his film suffers from it! The lead character 'Tommy', was very good, but it wasn't enough. And Tom Hardys heroics were laid on a bit thick!
Nevertheless a great cinema experience (And it really needs to be seen in the cinema!)
Zimmers tick tock score really gets the pulses racing, and the set pieces are thrilling!

    Sing Street (2016)

This is a wonderful movie, especially if you have a fondness for the 80s. A love story set in Dublin. If you can remeber, your first love (who cant) this will give some tear ducts some exercise.

Impresssed by Sing Street, I followed the writer/director and found this. Pretty god and Mark Ruffalo really is great but Kiera Knightly really not in the saem league and she lets it down IMHO

    McFarland 2015

Confirming by respect for Costner, he turns in a really controlled and subtle porformance in this classic, "against the odds" drama. loved it. Why are such performances overlooked at the awards?

    Moulin Rouge!
    moulin_rouge.jpg
I feel like I hear mostly negative things about this from many people. I honestly don't get it. Kidman is as beautiful as ever and both Kidman and McGregor have amazing voices. I really enjoy Moulin Rouge and, while I'm not into the musical genre, it's in my top three musicals.

    Free Fire
    free-fire-poster-17.jpg
The trailer I saw for this made it look like an action-comedy and it wasn't really all that funny. However it was really good. The amount of gunshots and bullet holes is almost funny though. This would be the second time I like Armie Hammer in a movie, the first being The Man From U.N.C.L.E. I'd recommend it if you're in the mood for some mindless fun.

@QsAssistant, I thought 'Free Fire' delivered in both the action and the comedy. Just watching everyone involved get more and more injured and bitter as the hours passed was great.

@Creasy47 I enjoyed the movie and thought that the amount of gunfire and bullet holes everyone had was funny but I thought the movie over all would've been more funny. It didn't really come off as a comedy like I was expecting.

Was it similar to Shoot Em Up?
  • QsAssistantQsAssistant All those moments lost in time... like tears in rain
    Posts: 1,812
@Last_Rat_Standing Not really. Shoot Em Up is more crazy and over the top with it's action. Free Fire is about a group of gun dealers stuck in a warehouse after a deal goes bad. Each side takes cover while bullets fly. As the movie goes on the more injured everyone gets.

Yes, but in a good way, right?

    HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2 (2015)

Some stupid humour, but like in the first, also some great scenes. The best part is Dracula s dad Vlad, voiced by Mel Brooks.

    Texas Chainsaw (2013)
Oh yes, that's right, this one was released as Texas Chainsaw 3D in cinemas, with the 3D being dropped from the title for the DVD/BR releases. My feelings haven't changed, and were it not for the CGI blood and Heathers age* (the latter needs only a frustratingly small amount of work to plug that plot hole), this would be one place higher in my ranking.

    Chainsaw Rev-ometer:
    1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
    2. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
    3. Texas Chainsaw (2013)
    4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
    5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
    6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
    7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994)

*If those two problems were fixed, the film would move up a place.

I make it a point to watch the original two around every Halloween. The second one is pure nutty hilarity. I'd like to eventually see them all. The first one is a classic of the genre. I remember when I was younger I snuck it into a stack of VHS tapes I rented while at my grandmas. The whole intro about it being a real story was terrifying lol

It's annoying that the biggest flaw of the film, could be so easily remedied. Shame we won't see a continuation of that story. An alterange angle, would be if they had set the film a decade earlier, Daddario could had played her age, and be revealed to be the daughter of Leatherface, continuing the story from Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. And more Alexandra Daddario can only be a good thing.

I think the fact that it was not only based of a real crime, but also there is nothing about the film that is out of the realms of possibility. Laeatherface isn't supernatural. He might be extraordinarily strong, though with the mind of a child, but if shot in the head, he would die.

When this came out, it was movie of the year for me. Nothing has changed. Such a powerful and smart script.

I actually had a good time with this film. It was nothing ground breaking in terms of comedy but I had some good laughs from it. Like so many comedy films it had that almost unrealistic happy ending but it doesn't ruin the film.
