You're very welcome! I over-indulged in the last Criterion sale, so this time I only bought Christmas presents: The Gunfighter for Dad, the Karel Zeman boxset for my younger brother, and A Brighter Summer Day for the youngest.

Can't go wrong with those first two, ashamed to say I've not seen A Brighter Summer Day yet but it's on the list. I still need to pick up both of those on Criterion ASAP.

It was pretty good, and interesting. Yes, worth a watch. The English title is Congo Murder, I believe.

Les Misérables : The Staged Concert

Matt Lucas and Katy Secombe as the Thénardier(s) really stole the show.

The Wind Rises : Miyazaki's last (for now) movie. It should have won an Oscar. Beautiful, moving at the end, I had tears in my eyes), God knows it deserved it.

King Kong 4K The peter Jackson version, there is a lot I like about this film, Skull Island definitely the highlight. OK the Dino chase is a bit dodgy though Kong vs Vastasaurous Rex's more than makes up for it. The giant insects really are unnerving, there are some good horror elements in this film. The sound is immense especially Kong, really gives you the sense of the power of Kong.

I also saw it theaters, I quite enjoyed it at the time but haven't had a full viewing of it since, I don't believe. I do recall going in at midday and walking out of the theater at night, it was a long one.

I honestly can't remember if I saw King Kong at the cinema, I am a huge fan of the LOTR's Films which I saw at the cinema, so I must have gone to watch it. Had it on Bluray for years, the 4K version is a step up in every way I do like monster movies.

THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (1973)
Peter (Bullitt) Yates Boston set thriller starring a terrific Robert Mitchum as the title character, whose gun running skills get him into deep water. He walks a fine and dangerous line between the criminal underworld and the cops ( headed by the always excellent Richard Jordan) as he turns informer to try and extricate himself from an imminent prison sentence. Also starring Peter Boyle, this is a gripping thriller expertly helmed by Yates, with a very good screenplay from Paul Monash from the novel by George V. Higgins.
    Highly recommended.

Borat 2 The film had me laughing early on though ran out of steam pretty quickly, the format feels a bit old the entire film could have been all actors or real people I don't think there would have been much difference. Maybe watching it after the recent election also contributed toward lessening its effect.

    Underwater

Little original here but the execution re direction, cast and production design was top notch. As usual with this genre, let down by the ending IMHO

I found T.J. Miller a bit much at times but the film itself really worked for me. I've come to appreciate Kristen Stewart over the years, so that probably helps.

And the ending? Ah yes, the ending... Let me just say that I have a particular reason for liking the ending, and it's got something to do with what the director admitted some time after the release of the film. :)

The Mummy Returns 4K Not as good as the first film though a good sequel, thoroughly enjoyed this re watch. The film never stops it has a very good pace. Old school adventure in the vein of the classic Ray Harryhausen films, though not on the level of his stop motion, CGI often can't recreate the character that stop motion did in monsters.

Stephen Sommers films I always enjoy, I wonder what happened to him, it appears G.I. Joe stopped him getting hired which is a shame.

@DarthDimi IMHO most great movies have a great ending and work back. Aliens is the obvious comparison here and there, we got a classic, face to face confrontation. Blowing everything up was an option and it was explained why they could not do that. It's just lazy script writing in Underwater. I was really engaged with the film and, all the time, thinking, how are they going to tie this up. As with many movies, it renews respect and admiration for the classics that inspired them.

Ninja (2009) and Ninja 2: Shadow Of A Tear (2013)

Both movies star Scott Adkins, and directed by frequent collaborator, Isaac Florentine. The 2nd film just edges out the first, but both are really good examples of Scott Adkins doing what he does. The scene from Ninja 2, where Casey flees from the police through the hotel, makes me want to see Scott Adkins as Bond even more.

    TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY (1991)
Just bought a 4K copy of this . Havent watched it in years even when its been on T.V.
But it holds up really well. Continuing on from a discussion elsewhere about James Cameron. I still maintain he went downhill after this. His direction here is sharp, and the story is well told, and the effects are still splendid. Most of all the action set pieces are genuinely thrilling and superbly staged.
Never felt the same about anything he did after this. Its as if he hit his peak and became lazy.
Really enjoyed this viewing. Still remember seeing it in the cinema, great experience!

One of the best action films ever made. You're right, seeing this on the big screen was an amazing experience. Agree mate, he never made a better film after this. But I still love The Abyss, True Lies and Avatar 😁👍

Just love this Walter Hill 'Rock fable'

    Amazing music, photography and editing.

Yeah it's sometimes unintentionally hilarious and some of the continuity is well off (Cody's hairstyle changes between 4 shots 😄) but it's timeless and the action is brilliant!

I have the 4K Restoration of T2 it does look fantastic, I also watched T2 at the cinema, was so ground breaking at the time for the CGI, I also saw the Abyss at the cinema.

I give Cameron credit for pushing technology forward though I agree his more recent films are not as good. I also watched Titanic and Abyss at the cinema, neither were great on a story telling level.

The Director's cut of The Abyss Is substantially better than the theatrical release; the story is fleshed out.
