I went into to it with middling expectations, but the film exceeded all of them with ease. It is perhaps a touch to long, but with a neat, twisty-turny story, great villain and some of the best visual effects I have ever seen in ANY movie, I would fully recommend Star Trek Into Darkness.

    Kick Ass

Still love it. Best superhero film ever made by far.

I believe I've asked you before, but are you looking forward to the sequel? I know I am. Jim Carrey looks astounding in it.

I am sure it has been explained already, by why wasn't Ving in it beyond a cameo?

Not sure unless he already had filming commitments elsewhere?

Because I had only seen this film once before (and as I just saw Into Darkness), I decided to give this one a re-watch. Needless to say, I enjoyed Star Trek immensely. Great characters, special effects and story. Just a fun sci-fi adventure film that rises above the usual yore. After my initial Into Darkness viewing, I'd rate the two recent Star Trek films evenly. 8/10

Now, I have never really been a "trekkie," but I was very interested in seeing what many call 'the greatest Star Trek of them all.' I might make a few enemies with this, but I found Wrath of Khan only decent. Montalaban was great as Khan, but the rest of the acting did not impress me. Also, the story seemed a little clunky to me. It was a decent film, but I was actually a little disappointed. I've read that for non-trekkies, WOK doesn't play as well so maybe I give weight to that theory. 6.5/10

The Truman Show is great film on so many levels. It has a fascinating story with stand out performances all around, and works splendidly as a social satire. As reality television is larger than it ever was today, The Truman Show has almost become more relevant than it was in 1998 (when it was released). I also have a thing for black comedies, and The Truman Show is a superior one. Highly recommended. 8.5/10

8 - Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

    friday-the-13th-part-8-jason-takes-manhattan-movie-poster-1989-1020194399.jpg

No! This film is not good. Let me summarize: I love the opening song, I like Hodder's performance as Jason and I can dig the comedy in Vancouver Manhattan. Jason reaches Times Square (but he at no point 'takes' it). Interesting ideas come plenty, satisfying realisation of said ideas is nil.

The formula is tired at this point. Not a single Jason attack is creepy, not a single death worthy of the effort. No suspense, hardly any T&A, gore or splatter to at least justify the wasted 90 minutes.

Oh, and the NY sewers are flooded with toxic waste on a daily basis.

    Final verdict: 4/10

I rather like Jason Takes Manhattan, but it's got some problems that I just can't overlook. The toxic waste being one, and that god awful ending. It's no wonder that Hodder did everything in his power to have it changed, and when that failed, make doubly sure that the next film bore no connection to it's predecessor.

That said, I like the change of setting, on the Lazarus.

9 - Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday

When Jason can't even take Manhattan in a film called 'Jason Takes Manhattan', it's time to pull out. And so we return to Sean Cunningham, the original film's director, for inspiration. And guess what, Jason also gets a new production company: New Line...

Sure, it was no secret that Freddy versus Jason was on many people's minds. But they weren't up to it just yet. So we enter a very experimental phase, and one which I've come to appreciate over the years. The concept is great - Jason hopping from host to host like an evil entity (and slightly copied by the Denzel Washington thriller 'Fallen'). The execution: not so much.

What this film lacks is production value. Even the score, by Manfredini no less, sounds like it was performed on a Casio keyboard. Still, the film excites me for three reasons:

    1) Best coitus interruptus by Jason EVER!
    2) The Necronomicon... The Necronomicon!!
    3) Jason goes to hell, and Freddy pulls his mask with him.

Overall, I'm torn between my appreciation of the film's bold moves and its overall disappointing execution.

    Final verdict: 6/10

Just watched Star Trek into darkness, brilliant film long time trek fan. Chris Pine is excellent as Kirk, the whole cast was very good and accepting that this is a alternate time line could not of wished for a better movie. The special effects at times were mind blowing, and a the universe in which the film takes place was fully realised.

    How was the Cumberbatch?

Cumberbatch was excellent, posed a very credible threat. Got a big career ahead of him based on this.

Last film i watched was Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Bought it for 98p, first time i have watched it since its first release. Loved this film very funny and visually brilliant.

    Texas Chainsaw (2013)

The holes in this film are well known by now, as well as the corny dialogue. But honestly, once the festivities got underway, I never gave Heather's age a second thought. I doubt it'll happen, but I would like to see a direct sequel to this film.

    1. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
    2. Texas Chainsaw (2013)
    3. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)
    4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)
    5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
    6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)
    7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995)

@MajorDSmythe, really? Very interesting rating. I loathed 'Texas Chainsaw' - I didn't care for a single one of the characters, and any possible 'scary' factor of Leatherface was gone by showing him so much throughout the film. I prefer the 2003 remake to this film.

I also went online afterward because I was confused, and they said that this movie plays no part in the world of the 2003 and 2006 films, hence why characters are missing and the location is different. It really had me confused throughout.

I liked the idea of Texas Chainsaw but I thought the execution was lacking. I thought it was an alright slasher flick let down by unlikeable characters, a massive plot hole and poor 3D.

I thought the ending was interesting though and Heather was alright so I wouldn't mind a sequel.

    10 - Jason X

    jason-x.jpg

Leprechaun and Pinhead both went to space. Jason got there last. And still some folks thought it was a good idea. Well, it was good enough to invite David Cronenberg on set for seven seconds.

But other than that... Alas! There are some bits that get taken from the Alien manual but the overall effect is poor. Very poor. I don't mind überJason all that much and that neat little callback to the old Crystal lake films on the holodeck actually earns the film some points. But no matter how often I've seen this film, I keep forgetting most of it. It's utterly uninteresting and dumb. I applaud it for its attempt to be a litte different but I SOOO can't wait for what happens next. ;-)

Ah, the end of the original timeline. I've grown rather fond of Jason X. Ok, so the dialogue is double edam cheesy, but it has some of the most inventive carnage (SEE: kills) in the series and I like Jason's look. After the melted on mask look of JGTH, Jason X has a more traditional normal appearance.

    Dredd 3D

Other than watching the Sly film several times in the mid 90s I've never been a real fan of this character, however after hearing positive feedback I thought I'd give this version a go. Within 5 minutes I knew this was better than the first film. Less hammy and twice as brutal, this is meant to be a more faithful adaptation of the comic (note that Dredd never takes his helmet off). However I viewed it as a sort of Robocop meets Die Hard style flick due to its graphic violence, dark humour, intentionallly unemotional protagonist with head-gear (he even says "you have 10 seconds to comply") and the fact most of the action is confined to a tower block.

I found the film suprisingly entertaining even if it does go into cheese mode on a few occasions (there's one scene in which a trecherious villain makes the fatal mistake of talking not shooting in the most blatant manner - a sequence which admittingly made my eyes role). Additionally some of the shoots feel a little too "gimicky". For example the effects of the "slo-mo" drug seem like an excuse to show off some fancy 3D. However these are relitively minor flaws.

The cast are excellent, particularly Karl Urban as Dredd and Lena Heady as Ma-Ma (the latter for some reason reminded me of Nina Myres from 24).

Would be interested to know if there are fans of the original Dredd comic here and if so what they thought of the film.

Last film I saw was Jack Reacher. I have never read the novels so I can't comment on the faithfulness to the source material but I enjoyed the film a great deal. Tom Cruise was great, hard to believe the man is 50. Great and some brutal action scenes, Rosamund Pike was great too and incredibly attractive-looking and for some reason when the girl, Sandy gets punched in the face, I couldn't stop laughing.

Almost a decade after the film was made, I finally got around to watching...

    Hellraiser: Hellworld

Even Lance Henriksen couldn't save the film. This series took a nosedive after Bloodline, and never recovered imo. Though going by what i've heard, Revelations drives the series further into the ground. I don't think any other horror series had crashed and burned as badly as this series. The Leprechaun films included.

    1. Hellraiser (1987)
    2. Hellraiser IV: Bloodline (1996)
    3. Hellraiser II: Hellbound (1988)
    4. Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth (1992)
    5. Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002)
    6. Hellraiser: Deader (2005)
    7. Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005)
    8. Hellraiser: Inferno (2000)

I like the final five minutes of the film though.
After we learn we've been tricked and that it's all been fake, suddenly the 'real' Cenobites appear and at least we get a good moment - IMO that is. ;-)

That ending gave me the feeling that it was intended to be the end of the series. I don't know, it just felt... final.
The lingering shot of the box gave me that impression.

How about this for a combo!
Dredd: Loved it but a shame it was contained to a high rise shootout. The repetitive slow mo for 3D effect got a little annoying after a while though. Overall I enjoyed it though!

Ice Age 4: They are one of my guilty pleasures! :D Scratt just kills me everytime! Brilliant!

It's not often I get time to take in a film these days but caught a watch of U-Turnvery recently, and yet another fine Oliver Stone release, but a bit of a hidden gem to many

    In short,
Sean Penn gets stranded in the Arizona desert, finds a small community, and can't decide if he wants to f-ck or kill Jennifer Lopez (I know what I'd favor), in order to get his hands on a small fortune of money and gets involved in brawls along the way, disputes with a belligerent garage mechanic and eventually manages to 'buy' a ticket out of town only to have it taken away as soon as he's laid hands on it and eventually, after about everyone has stabbed each other in the back and betrayal ensues, he finally thinks he has won the day, and is the only one left standing - only for one last moment of misfortune to occur. It's actually a decent watch, maybe a bit surreal but as before, perhaps a secret masterpiece from a talented director

Well worth a watch if you've yet to see it. A hidden gem of a movie

Last night I watched Teddy Bear, a Dutch/indie film. It centers on a massive, but gentle, bodybuilder with a very controlling mother. It follows his quest to find love. This is a wonderful movie. The main actor, Kim Kold is in the new Fast and Furious. I haven't seen it but I think he fights Dwayne Johnson, The Rock.

MIB3: Thought it was much better than the second film with a much better villain. Also have to say Brolin was absolutely brilliant as a younger Agent K! =D>

Amazing Spiderman: Well this was just fantastic for me. Loved how he spun his web in the sewer. Love it that he needs cartridges to shoot webs....etc. Much more fun and I certainly look forward to seeing the next movie.

XMEN First Class: Thoroughly enjoyed this one! Don't think I would have changed anything on this one. Although I saw no reason in the pointless inclusion of Logan in a brief cameo?

Jack Reacher: Not sure how the novels go? or how many their are? But have to say I really enjoyed the film. If their are to be more movies? I am surprised they didn't for a younger actor? That being said I do like Cruise a lot.

    Man of Steel

Enjoyed it but thought they went a little overboard with the CGI. Henry Cavil was decent enough as Superman and he reminded me of a younger "prettier" version of Pierce Brosnan for some reason. Must have been the hair!
