I realize now that it is just WAY too much Tim Burton. That just happens to be a comic book movie.

I've never put much stock in that criticism. A good comic book film should be the vision of its director, especially if it's based on a comic book character that has existed in so many versions that there isn't a "true" one. After all, the Nolan films are just as much his vision as Burton's two are, or Reeves' entry. It's just that some people prefer one vision over another, or might object to the execution rather than the conception. The great thing about Batman Returns is precisely that it's Burton's most concentrated vision of Batman, and his gothic, creepy, neurotic, operatic conception of Batmans' world is every bit as valid and comic booky as any other.

Batman Returns has improved for me over the years, I have the film on 4K I find the film visually stunning. Years later I appreciate Burton doing something different to Batman 89. I still think it takes too long for Batman to show up in Returns and early on Bats feels like a side character in his own movie.

Don’t remember the last time I posted my ranking of the standalone, live-action Batman films, but:

    1) The Dark Knight (2008)
    2) Batman (1989)
    3) Batman Returns (1992)
    4) The Batman (2022)
    5) Batman Begins (2005)
    6) The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
    7) Batman (1966)
    8) Batman & Robin (1997)
    9) Batman Forever (1995)

#2-5 honestly are all pretty interchangeable depending on my mood, and those top five are all among my all-time favorite films. The rest of the spots I feel pretty firmly about.

I’d also like to add that Tim Burton understood Batman a lot more than he was given credit for.

It’s one of the best Batman stories ever made. In all media.

Ditto. Very inspired by Batman : Year Two, but with enough differences to be its own, great thing.

It's a great film. Surprisingly quite short too. But yeah, for me easily the best Batman movie I've seen. Haven't watched the other animated movies from that time in a while now, but they're pretty wonderful too from what I remember (there's the Batman of the future one where Joker returns which I loved as a kid).

On the flip side if you want to watch a really bad animated one, there's the Killing Joke adaptation from a few years ago. Awful.

Mine is basically yours. Just switch 8 and 9, which is a shame, Kilmer was good for the role (I want to say it was either Finger or Kane who said he had the best portrayal of Bruce up to that point in their mind's eye) and got a corny movie IMHO.

Sub-Zero is another good animated one. The Animated Series did a few things that were great and one was the backstory of one Victor Fries. They took a rather one dimensional villain and fleshed him out and gave him a wonderful back story. The man became more human but also more tragic.
