I love that movie, and I keep bouncing back and forth between that Trek VI as my favourite Trek movie...

If you look at The Motion Picture without the rest of the films, it's a great film. They had the challenge of taking what worked on the small screen and making it work on the big screen. They had the challenge of taking Star Trek, a show that nobody really seemed to care about until reruns came into the picture, and making people enjoy it again. The fact that The Motion Picture succeeded where the show had failed is a true testament to it.

And like I said when that picture was first posted: Craig looks like he belongs in that uniform, but Q just looks f*cked up.

I love TMP. It's Star Trek's version of 2001: A Space Odyssey and that's a sacred film for me. Yes, it's less action filled and energetic than TWOK but I find it a beautiful film and the pacing suits me fine. All those minutes of flying into V'ger are a feast to my eyes.

    My ranking, currently:

    1) ST
    2) ID
    3) TMP
    4) FC
    5) G
    6) TWOK
    7) TUC
    8) TSFS
    9) TVH
    10) I
    11) N
    12) TFF

The Undiscovered Country has the coolest movie phasers though...

I like The Director's Cut of The Motion Picture, but haven't seen the true original. Is it all too different? Is one actually better than the other as some people claim?
  • The Motion Picture works so well because all the original cast (James Doohan aside) look hardly much older than when the original series ended ten years earlier. Shatner had aged considerably by The Wrath of Khan as had a number of the usual faces, but here at least, they didn't appear too much different from before. Shatner's Kirk was probably at his most serious here, and he became more lenient to others in subsequent releases, such as random disputes with Willard Decker

It's the third, maybe second, of the best of the movie releases with the original cast, but The Wrath of Khan can't be beaten, but Ricardo Montalban stole the show that year

That worked quite well with the plot of Wrath of Khan through The Voyage Home.

The original is good too, but the DC has additional V'Ger shots and better matte paintings, as well as bridge sounds from the series. It just has more 'character'.

    6) TFF
    7) nothing after that interests me
  • I haven't seen beyond First Contact of the movie releases. I never took to the Next Generations cast after the original crew finished in 1991 so a favorites list would resemble -

    #1 The Wrath of Khan
    #2 The Motion Picture
    #3 The Undiscovered Country
    #4 The Search for Spock
    #5 Generations
    #6 The Final Frontier
    #7 First Contact
    #8 The Voyage Home

I would have at least stuffed Generations above Insurrection.

I hate Generations. It destroyed everything ST VI tried to accomplish and It gets negative points for Killing off Kirk in the most silly way possible. It's the DAD of Star Trek movies.

Yeah but Voyage Home was deliberately made to be a light hearted film. Generations just takes a dump on TOS and Star Trek as a whole, then adds this stupid complicated plot that goes nowhere. Generations is the worst ST movie ever made IMO.

I would have called The Voyage Home the DAD of Stark Trek.

I would leave that label for Shatners movie.

The Voyage Home is both funny and brilliantly in the CGI/effects departement, the story is great Star Trek and it is just great with the TOS crew out of their comfortzone. It is not the greatest dramatic story but after Khan & Search it was an excellent choice to do.

Compared to Generations, Shat's film was gold-pressed Latinum.

I haven't seen nothing of the Star Trek universe. If I wish to start, should I do it with the reboot, with the Motion Picture or with the series? (Actually, I don't think I'll see the series as they are too many episodes.)

If you don't start with the series than you miss a LOT.

Yes but it is too time consuming! That's perhaps the reason I've never entered to the Star Trek universe, there are too many series and movies.

Watch the entire first season, then move on to the films in Order. When you get to Next Generation, skip Generations and start with First Contact and continue.

  • @0013 You got to watch the original episodes to get a feel of things, as without Space Seed for example, you won't get such an understanding of The Wrath of Khan, although some like to go into their adventures blind

Someone mentioned that The Voyage Home was a poor release, and have to go along with that as always. Seems as far detached from Star Trek as possible, as the Enterprise crew appear in a disastrous 'humor' appearance scattered around San Francisco on an effort to 'save whales'

Nimoy wanted a fun approach after the seriousness of what came before, and while something of a favorite release with some, I can't see beyond it's the black mark of the movie series. At least things improved and got back on track with the next release The Final Frontier, and this time Shatner took over in the directors chair from Nimoy's ill-advised attempt, although he did do well for 1984's The Search for Spock

The whole Star Trek industry can be a little intimidating for some with all the series, and film releases and everything it entails - I even get lost myself as a fan of it all, but then again, lost interest by the time of Deep Space Nine although The Next Generation was good, but it can never beat the original crew and episodes / movie titles

I wonder if Star Trek will continue as a film series or if there will be another TV series. If they want to continue this altered timeline, it'd be nice to see a reboot TNG series.

Rebooting TNG would really be scraping the bottom of the barrel would it not? Is that all that is left for Star Trek? Reboots?
