Spock and Kirk has "White"
Uhura and Chekov "Blue"
McCoy "Green"
Sulu "Orange"
And also did anyone else notice that Lt. Saavik has "Red" in ST 2 but "white" In ST 3 ??
12. Star Trek: Into Darkness
The last Star Trek film really left a sour taste in my mouth. Nothing about this film clicked for me. I didn't get into the characters, the story, the action - everything was either bad or unremarkable. Never want to see it again.
11. Star Trek
Yeah, I don't care much for the reboot series. It has turned Star Trek into a mainstream action spectacle, which it isn't supposed to be. The first is at least put together better as a film than Into Darkness. I have heard Beyond is supposed to be closer to the originals, so here's hoping that one can be the first reboot film I enjoy.
10. Star Trek: Insurrection
Insurrection can be summed in one word for me: BORING. I mean seriously, this film was bland and dull pretty much the whole way through. Still, it feels like Trek, and I prefer the crew and feel over the reboot stuff.
9. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
It's pretty bad, but at least Final Frontier has some really good moments between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. In all though, it's too silly, too dumb, and just not interesting enough. Clear-cut weakest of the original crew's films for me.
8. Star Trek: Nemesis
Nemesis isn't very good either, but it manages to achieve some good drama and action. The finale is pretty good. Definitely belongs in the bottom half still; too many uninteresting segments, and slightly missing the Trek-feel.
7. Star Trek: Generations
Generations is the first on my list I can openly say I enjoy. I know it's flawed, but I had a great time watching this film for the most part. It can be quite rough on the plot at points. Decent Trek film for me anyway overall.
6. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
I like The Voyage Home, but after the reboot films (or at least the first one), I'd pick it as the most overrated Trek film. It can be very humorous, but the story and action isn't as interesting to me as some of the other films.
5. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Search for Spock is a little underappreciated. I find it a very solid continuation of Wrath of Khan, and a really fun adventure film overall. Not quite the best, but it has become one of my favorites.
4. Star Trek: First Contact
I'm sure nearly everyone agrees First Contact is the best New Generation Trek film. And it is a good one; a solid, intriguing action ride from start to end. It was just really nice to see the new crew get an especially good outing.
3. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Maybe it's just me, but I think the first Star Trek film is incredibly underrated. While many call it too slow (or "the motionless picture), that pace really benefited the movie for me. I guess I can't exactly explain it, but I was really engaged the whole way, and I really though it captured the Trek feel.
2. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
An awesome sendoff for the original crew. Great plot, great action, and some of the most interesting character moments in the whole series. Easily one of the best Trek films.
1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
No surprise here. Wrath of Khan is the best Star Trek film. I hardly need to explain; it's got the best villain, a good amount of action, and a great revenge story. The perfect Trek.
The cast really click with each other, many laughs throughout the 2 hours for funny dialogues between them. I loved the overall look of it, felt a lot like TOS. The visuals are spectacular throughout, space scenes ("starship porn") are different from the previous installments in having new effects (the camera turns a lot, frog-eye lens effects, new warp-turbulence effects).
The McGuffin (that what drives the plot) is a bit lame (
The music overall is excellent, especially one part that feels like a big space opera and with the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" playing loudly reminded me of "Guardians of the Galaxy".
My only criticism is that I just cannot stand the trend in action scenes to make cuts quicker and quicker, it seems like QoS all over again, with 4-5 camera angles per second. Often the action (fisticuffs and chases) is really hard to follow. I found myself losing interest in it during one or two scenes.
Great ending. Essentially, the whole film is a pre-titles sequence, because titles follow as an afterthought. Same for Rihanna's song, at the end and therefore not really connected to the actual movie. 3D effects are well done, I totally forgot I was wearing the glasses.
Recommendation: 3,5/5 stars.
Here was the poster I got.
In a lot of ways it's a yes and a no. It's hard to really explain since I've only seen it once. But boy was it a beautiful film. It does feel more like the original series overall but it also feels like it's own unique universe. I thought it was way better than both reboot films and I really think all the fans will like it. What Justin Lin and Simon Peg did was take what Abrams started and heavily improved on it. This felt like big screen TOS for me.
You should go see it immediately, you'll not be disappointed. Crew chemistry is like in the best episodes of TOS, lots of crackling bickering from Bones to Spock, Scotty on high form
Its such a beautiful track and really reminds me of John Barry's theme for Raise the Titanic.
Wow hybrid!
You know I'm a huge Trekkie, Bondboy and DC fanboy (Batman/JusticeLeague).
To get a new movie of all three franchises within 10 months is like Christmas, Birthday, favourite dish, lifting weights and sex at the same time.
SPECTRE delivered all and more that I hoped for and it is my favourite Bond movie.
BvS disappointed to a degree where I physically hurt just thinking about that crap.
STAR TREK BEYOND
I never doubted it will be great. But what I just experienced is the best Star Trek movie since First Contact.
It definitely is my No 2 after the Borg movie with Picard.
It's an insane action roller-coaster-ride of unparalleled dimensions. And within all the mind-blowing action there is the greatest dialogue and an incredible TOS feeling.
The new character Jaylah is the best new addition to the hall of fame of Star Trek characters. She's definitely in my Top 10 best Star Trek characters ever.
OMG I pray she'll be in the next one too.
The score is bloody freaking fantastic!!!
Justin Lin is a genius at directing action and I pray again, for him to become the next James Bond director.
STAR TREK BEYOND delivers in every way.
Which is a shame because I do enjoy this cast. The character building and bonding moments in Beyond were very much appreciated. However, let's be honest, these actors absolutely pale in comparison to the original cast. I suppose that's been my main gripe all along. I want Trek to move forward, with new characters and new ideas. Why are we stuck trying to reinterpret the adventures of Kirk and Spock in an alternate timeline? All it does is remind me of how much better the originals were. In every conceivable way.
That being said, I really did want to like this movie. There just wasn't anything particularly interesting or engaging going on most of the time. Seriously, the main villain's plan is the same one from the past three movies! He's very angry and gets his hands on some sort of super weapon to kill millions of people. Oh, and the Enterprise gets destroyed yet again. Yawn. I found myself bored to tears during most of the big "action" scenes.
So, to be fair, let's list some positives. I did enjoy that they gave the whole cast a decent amount of screen time. The music was gorgeous. Some of the humor worked. I enjoyed the new alien chick (sorry, I've forgotten her name already) and it would be nice to see her as part of the crew in the next one. And that's about it. One last thought. Please don't play that Beastie Boys song in a Star Trek film ever again. Thanks.
As to your criticism about the cast: The originals were original, and so by definition cannot be topped. It's like Connery, he'll never really be topped. But the thing is that the new actors bring their own stuff to the roles. They are in general more over the top than in the sixties. nuScotty is his own persona and I even like his playing more than originalScotty, the same goes for Chekov.
