They should have gone with the script by The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith that was written for Tarantino even if Tarantino decided not to direct it. At least that would have been a fun, unique Star Trek movie.

It has been reported that the script is a feature film adaptation of this classic episode: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Piece_of_the_Action_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series) So basically it would be a 1920s gangster film with the Star Trek characters.

That doesn’t excite me. Then again, I never really cared for the 20s gangster pastiche act in “A Piece of the Action”.

If Tarantino hadn’t walked off and kept on the project I might have given it a chance because Tarantino at least earned it. Plus I was rooting for Tarantino to inject something fresh for the films, especially given how unusual it is for him to do a franchise film. But since he’s a Trek nerd, I expect he knows his stuff.

Oh well.

That doesn’t excite me either; I had read that he was also a fan of one of my all time, Yesterday's Enterprise.

I’ve always thought that they should have saved that script for a feature film , but instead of the Enterprise C it would have been the Enterprise A wit Kirk and company. It would have been a great way to combine the two generations.

I think I'll watch "The Man Trap" to mark the occasion - as I do most years.

One More Thing: This is still one of the most inspiring openings for a TV program....ever!!!

I don’t think there’s a future for Trek films. So I’m curious what exactly they’ll try to do to keep that going. Trek on film has either existed as a glorified reunion for TOS and TNG or tried relaunching an old cast of characters with a younger cast. It would be more interesting if they try doing a one-off film like ROGUE ONE with an entirely new cast.

The thing with Rogue One was that it captured the spirit and tone of the original. I'm a huge TOS fan but, lets face it, the actors were not anything special but we came to love the characters. It was all about the writing and keeping to the traditional themes. I'm not sure if, today, the writers aren't there any more or producers are trying to produce a new product to appeal to a younger audience. Either way, they are miles away from the original values that made TOS such a classic. They found gold with Meyer and Bennett. Is it so hard to replicate?
