"Pierce Brosnan might have turned in his license to kill, but that's not stopping him from talking Bond, James Bond.

Yahoo! Movies caught up with the 59-year-old actor in Manhattan to discuss his latest starring role, in Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier's charming romcom "Love Is All You Need," opening Friday. The Irishman plays an embittered widower that gets a second chance at love with a cancer survivor (Trine Dyrholm) when they meet at their children's Italian wedding.

But, ever the gentleman, Brosnan graciously switched gears and discussed his years as Bond, where he fit in the 007 pantheon -- and seeing "Skyfall" for the first time.

We're here to talk about "Love Is All You Need," but let's get a few Bond questions out of the way. Have you seen the new ones with Daniel Craig?

I've only seen "Skyfall." I had to. I was in London doing a film with Toni Collette, so every time I'd walk out my door I'd see Daniel. Every time I'd turn the radio on I'd hear Adele. I said, "OK, no time like the present." There's enough space, time, and water under the bridge to see what this man has done.

And?

And I loved it. I did. I really did. I've covered a lot of ground since playing James Bond. I knew Daniel. We passed in the night, so to speak, and we spoke about life and how wonderful it was for him to do 007. He didn't need any words from me except: "Go forth, steal thunder, be Bond, and enjoy the ride."

Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

It only lasts a certain time. As you keep going down the road you realize that more and more, and so you become quite sanguine about it. You can enjoy life then, when you don't have that monkey on your back of striving the whole time and trying to be great.

I still want to be good as an actor. That burns passionately in my heart, that the next job will really nail it. I'll really do it to perfection.

Bond was a glorious time for me. I have nothing but gratitude for having played such a role. And Daniel is magnificent.

You had a Cary Grant style to your Bond. Craig's Bond is more muscular.

He's a very hard man. Daniel gives 150 percent of himself to it constantly, both physically and emotionally. He's a Bond for this age and this time.

How does that differ from your Bond?

Once I saw Matt Damon come onto the stage with "The Bourne Identity," I could see that the stakes had been upped. My era of playing Bond was still a cross-pollination of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. They hadn't made that leap into the next phase: the huge action, and a more brutal Bond.

Watching "Skyfall," how did M's death affect you?

I would have loved to have held her in my arms myself. I would have loved to have played that scene with her. But it was not meant to be for me. It was Daniel's moment and his time.

Dame Judy [Dench] is such a magnificent lady in every sense of the word: as a human being and as an actress. Her presence on stage and screen is so magnetic. Her graciousness in life is so beautiful. So there you go. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Which means?

Thus passes the glory of the world."

Interesting. Pierce is quite the speaker and I am happy he likes Dan and Skyfall, and even gave the man advice. Very gentlemanly of him. Now all he needs to do is watch CR and QoS! Not watching those before Skyfall is like starting with The Deathly Hallows when starting to read Harry Potter. Skyfall is the conclusion of a trilogy, after all.

That was so very well said, Pierce Brosnan - bravo to you. =D>
I really enjoyed reading this. (My love for Dan's Bond in no way diminishes my love for Brosnan's Bond.)

Really a great interview. Glad he enjoyed Skyfall. I remember him saying he hadn't watched CR but he had tried to several times. I think his kids wanted to watch it and the DVD wouldn't work and he was going to watch it on a plane but they had tech difficulties.

Love the way he talks about M's death. Really touching

Interesting. Thanks for posting. There's no bitterness there, then, at least not now, some 11 years on from DAD.

This is a great quote from Brosnan that I agree with 100%:

"Once I saw Matt Damon come onto the stage with "The Bourne Identity," I could see that the stakes had been upped. My era of playing Bond was still a cross-pollination of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. They hadn't made that leap into the next phase: the huge action, and a more brutal Bond."

Lovely. Thanks for posting. Btw, using, say, bold and italic to make clear which are the writer's comments or questions vs which bits are Pierce's comments would have been helpful. :)

IF this is true then that's great. Although I read an interview with Pierce a couple of weeks ago which said that, at the time, he hadn't seen Skyfall.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/starsandstories/10002563/Pierce-Brosnan-interview-for-Love-Is-All-You-Need.html

When we spoke Brosnan had not yet seen Skyfall, although he was planning to take his sons to see it on his return to New York. He is still to catch up with the earlier Daniel Craig Bond films, Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008), due to both mixed feelings about his exit from the franchise and unreliable in-flight movie technology.

Maybe he changed his mind between interviews :-?

P.s. Could this be a way for the man who played Remington Steele, Thomas Crown and the only 007 to drive an invisible car to gently reassert his artistic credentials?[/b]

I've DEFFO seen photos of pierce going to see skyfall somewhere (this was ages ago). I think @marketto would be the man to clarify this as I'm sure the article with photos was on his James Bond Brasil site.

The way he talks about Judi's final scene makes me pretty certain he's seen it.

A great man - but am I truly amazed he hasn't seen Casino Royale. Don't think I could have resisted in his position, if only out of curiosity?

It's strange but also very refreshing to see Pierce so openly talk about Bond, something that until last year, really did seem untouchable and off limits. This makes me happy, makes me smile that Brosnan feels his relationship with Bond is at a place of reconciliation at last.

Plus, I'm very pleased he enjoyed Skyfall.

I sure hope he watches them. Brosnan is a decent guy, he can even be a decent actor sometimes. I think the problem is that he did not see at the time that his time as Bond had passed.

Roger Moore was open about not liking Die Another Day or Quantum of Solace that much.

Roger Moore was open about not liking Die Another Day or Quantum of Solace that much.

And he did give his valid reasons for it, as it turns out it is a matter of taste after all.

That's nice. Brosnan seems like a great bloke and it's good that he's not holding a grudge against the franchise after the unfortunate way he left.

And still some people are unable to say anything positive about the man.

I'm pretty sure that if he didn't like it, then he'd say so.

Interesting. It took him ten years to get over his being axed by EON (him being the only Bond actor to get the proverbial boot)
Good to see that time and years has matured Brosnan and he has finally put it behind him..
His comments were long overdue and the fact that he never saw CR and QoS speaks volumns to his feelings about EON.
That being said, I did like his comment about his Bond being somewhere between Moore and Connery. But read between the lines: His Bond never had his own persona like the other actors'.

I read between the lines and just saw a gentleman. In describing his Bond as a blend, that doesn't mean he didn't try to be his own Bond either. He clearly did not imply I faked it, couldn't handle it, was only copying two others - er, no.

I like Brosnan's Bond, and I love Moore and Connery, too. Dan's Bond is brutal, realistic, and so is Dalton's. Pierce came along at the right time.
  • Brosnan is a real gent and I hope he continues as part of the "Bond Family" as Moore and Dalton have. We'll never get to see him play Bond again but I still have my fingers crossed for Thomas Crowne 2

I absolutely loved Thomas Crown. The sequel has stalled out many times. Yet I also hope it gets made; great character, fun concept. I have good hopes for November Man, in the meantime.

If Pierce hated Skyfall, he would have spoken up, that's just the kind of guy he is. He has always been vocal about his disappointment in his own era so why wouldn't he be honest about Dan's films too?

Damn. If Pierce liked Skyfall, maybe I *NEED* to watch it again tomorrow... and try to see it the way he did...

    Pierce Brosnan=Class Act.

As is commonly known, Mr. Brosnan was keen on playing the role of 007 during his Remington Steele days, but his contract for the television show kept him from doing so. I wonder if we would see his legacy differently if he, noticeably younger, had also starred in TLD and LTK.... If so, would he have been in six Bond films, or would his tenure have ended earlier, thereby opening the door for either a much younger Daniel Craig--or perhaps someone else entirely?
