Well, once you can replicate food, clothing and simple tools & machines for next to no cost, there's no competition for resources, the only true wealth would be in discovery & individual artistry. Where do economics fit in to a system where no one NEEDS buy anything?

And this is the problem: an infinity of resources, no sickness, no poverty... Where to make a story from there? Diseases have their vaccine, space anomalies there is always a device to overcome them. You need a Borg invasion or something similar.

There's ALWAYS a story to tell, no matter the environment. There will always be conflict of some kind. I'd rather fight Borg than poverty...

There is a story to tell, but in an utopia it limits it. I prefer grim reality as a dramatic starting point. The Wire shows characters fighting poverty, sickness, violence in a dysfunctional society. It makes for much better drama, IMO. I don't expect scifi to be devoid of escapism of course, but there is just so much you can do with utopia.

It can force one to be inventive, though. Not a bad thing.

Star Trek was inventive, at least for a time, but at some point it became stale. There is just so often the Borg or another enemy can try to invade utopia. I am not the biggest fan of J.J. Abrams, but I understand why he wanted a fresh start and why he wanted to do away with continuity.

What I like about the way the new Stark Trek movie series is going, especially the way the 2nd film finished up, is that Abrams has effectively re-launched the original series. It took him two films, but the Enterprise is now off again on its journey to explore new galaxies, seek out new worlds, and blah blah blah.
This is great stuff. Also I noticed there seemed to be some tribble-like creatures lying on the table towards the end of STID. Bones seemed rather intrigued.
I suspect that with this new blank slate, Abrams will re-vist some of the classic original-series episodes but with a fresh twist.
It would be nice if he could crank up the production schedule. Maybe even a new TV show with this new cast, augmented by big-budget feature films.
I'm only a fan of the original series and crew. I've paid zip attention to the spin-off Trek shows that have followed, other than the feature films.
I am really looking forward to the new adventures of the Star Trek Enterprise,in this new time-line, in which everything can be done over again.
    Just brilliant!

Yes of course ;) but that's what I call it sometimes.
I am not a Trekker. When it comes to Trek, I will offend the fan base unintentionally. My Trek knowledge is quite scattered and casual.
I am more of Kirk fan than a Trek fan. I like both Shatner and the new guy Pine.
