More appropriate than ever
An elegiac and beautiful sophisti-pop love letter to Glasgow. Most write these guys off as Prefab Spout wannabes, but I hear so much more here.
Received as a gift for my birthday, but there was a misprint on the back cover.
Bought recently (and people in Kiwi Land will recognize that tune right away) :
The finest bossa nova/samba album ever made next to Getz/Gilberto. She is queen of this music (sorry not sorry, Astrud).
I've been listening to the Crowes for several years and have only grown to love their music more over time. I just picked up this album at a used music store a few weeks back and truly loved it. While it isn't as good as their back-to-back classics Shake Your Money Maker and Southern Harmony, it is better than its immediate predecessor Lions. It seems more intentional about its musical direction than Lions and ultimately just has more memorable songs. The more overt Southern Rock attitude and potent country influences differentiate it well from some of the Crowes weaker albums (Three Snakes and One Charm) and gives the band a strong return from its 7-year hiatus.
As great as ever. It really got to me this time. I was right back there in my teenage years, the ‘70s.
As overblown, yet fun, as I remembered it being. Never a favorite, sometimes I can enjoy some Alice Cooper. Very rigidly produced, not much space for anybody in the band to really groove.
I saw these guys in the early ‘80. I actually hung out in the stage wings.
