Fly By Night will likely be stuck in my head for the rest of the night; not that that's a bad thing.

    Oh, it's bad.

I knew our tastes in music would have to diverge eventually.

I’d rather have Rush stuck in my head then basically anything else. This is such a fun marathon so far. I’ll probably need today and tomorrow to get it all done though and space it out a little bit.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive Not Fragile the album that spawned the monster hit You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet, but the rest of the album is equally as good. Classic.

@FoxRox, you've got me in the mood for a lengthy marathon of Rush tunes. If anything, I might have to enjoy an album in full later tonight. Or hell, something like '2112: Overture/The Temples of Syrinx' on repeat will do me quite nicely.

2112 is great of course. So far, post-Power Windows, I actually like Counterparts best. I like how they tried going heavier on that one.

More precisely the first CD, which features the songs he did before becoming famous in the 70s. Among them songs by Aristide Bruand, protest songs in the vein of Antoine or Jacques Dutronc, and even a french version of Debbie Reynolds's "Tammy" (that lastone surprised me, I can tell you that). The second CD, featuring his greatest hist, I've listened to a few days before.

    Rush albums ranked/thoughts:

    19. Test for Echo
Not a hard choice for my least favorite Rush album. Has the least amount of standout tracks and overall weakest sound. Not terrible, but weak for Rush standards. Driven was the only track I remember liking a lot in particular. A couple other decent ones, a whole bunch of meh ones. Dog Years is possibly their worst song...

    18. Roll the Bones
Collectively, Roll the Bones is on the weaker, more forgettable side like Test for Echo. I am a fan of Ghost of a Chance and Dreamline though. Heresy, Bravado were decent too.

    17. Vapor Trails
A little better than the last couple ranked ones. One Little Victory, How It Is, Vapor Trails were the biggest highlights here. Still, overall it is far from Rush’s best stuff.

    16. Caress of Steel
The weakest of Rush’s early albums. I love Bastille Day and like Lakeside Park pretty well, but the other 3 tracks are quite weak. Their first attempts at really large epic songs were off. Practice makes perfect though...

    15. Rush
Their first album isn’t one of their best, but it’s still a fun listen. Working Man is one of their best of course. I also really enjoy What You’re Doing and Finding My Way. Some of the tracks are a little forgettable, but the album itself is very unique in Rush’s catalogue, being their most classic rockish-sounding album.

    14. Presto
A decent album from the newer Rush era. The Pass, Presto, Show Don’t Tell are really good ones. Chain Lightning and Red Tide pretty good too. There are a fair amount of meh ones, but because of the good tracks the album still fares fairly well.

    13. Hold Your Fire
Not the greatest way to end the Mercury years, but still a fair amount to like in this album. Force Ten, Lock & Key, Turn the Page, and Time Stand Still are all really good. Tai Shan is one of their weakest though, and many of the others are a little bland for Rush standards. Still, the album’s got its moments.

    12. Fly by Night
Now we’re talking. This will probably seem too low for many other Rush fans, but I still really like this album. Anthem, Fly by Night, By-Tor & the Snow Dog, and Beneath, Between & Behind are all really good. In the End and Making Memories are kind of fun too. Rivendell and Best I Can are a bit weak, but they don’t kill this album by any means. It marks improvement overall from their first album and features some great early hits.

    11. Grace Under Pressure
A solid Rush effort here. Distant Early Warning, Afterimage, The Body Electric, and The Enemy Within are my choices for the biggest standouts here. Between the Wheels and Red Sector A are also pretty good. At this point it’s just a matter of liking certain albums more than others!

Top 10 in the next post.

    10. Counterparts
Among Rush’s best post-Mercury albums. I love how they got heavier for this one; it helps set it apart and be a fun listen. Animate, Stick It Out, Cut to the Chase, Leave That Thing Alone, and Double Agents are my favorites from this one.

    9. Snakes & Arrows
Another really good post-Mercury album. Has some seriously great catchy tunes such as Good News First, Armor & Sword, Far Cry, The Way the Wind Blows, The Larger Bowl, etc. It’s their penultimate album and it’s filled with goodies! Great album overall.

    8. Power Windows
I gave Power Windows a slight edge over Snakes & Arrows (even though the latter is probably collectively better) because it has 3 of my all-time favorites: The Big Money, Marathon, and Manhattan Project. Middletown Dreams and The Emotion Detector are also solid.

    7. 2112
An album that is almost always placed in the Top 5. I do like 2112 a lot, but Something for Nothing and Lessons hold it back a bit for me, which are more on the average side. However, the epic title track, A Passage to Bangkok, Tears, and The Twilight Zone ensure it keeps a pretty high ranking. It’s undeniably a Rush classic.

    6. Hemispheres
Hemispheres just barely misses out on the Top 5 - mainly because it’s just a bit too short. The Trees is excellent, and Circumstances and La Villa Strangiato are both great. I’m not crazy about the Cygnus tracks (in this and Farewell to Kings), but they’re still decent as well. This album is still terrific despite only having 4 tracks.

    5. A Farewell to Kings
Closer to the Heart alone would almost guarantee a Top 5 spot for this album. It helps that it also has Cinderella Man, Xanadu, and its title track, which are also excellent songs. Even the less good ones, Madrigal and the first Cygnus song, are pretty decent. This album is terrific.

    4. Clockwork Angels
Yes, Rush’s final album is that good. Headlong Flight, Clockwork Angels, Caravan, Carnies, The Garden, and The Anarchist all help confirm this is one of my favorite Rush albums. All of the “weak” ones on this album are at least decent if not good or very good. A very strong effort overall and a great way for the band to go out.

    3. Signals
Following up Moving Pictures is no enviable task, but Rush did a pretty fine job with Signals. Subdivsions, New World Man, and The Analog Kid are all-time favorites for me. Losing It, The Weapon, and Digital Man are great as well. Countdown and Chemistry are on the weaker side but still aren’t bad. The good tracks on this one are so good they give it a Top 3 spot.

    2. Permanent Waves
No bad songs on this album. The Spirit of Radio is my #1 Rush song. Freewill is a Top 5. Doesn’t hurt either that Jacob’s Ladder (which I have moved up since the last ranking) and Entre Nous are there. Different Strings and Natural Science, the weakest ones, are still very good. This album is Rush firing on all cylinders. The next one even moreso somehow...

    1. Moving Pictures
Yes it’s predictable, but Moving Pictures is just the ultimate Rush achievement. Vital Signs is the weak link, but it’s not bad. Tom Sawyer is 10/10. Red Barchetta is 10/10. Limelight is 10/10. YYZ and Witch Hunt are 9 or 10/10. Oh and The Camera Eye is also excellent. Moving Pictures is just an insanely good album, and is the crowning achievement in Rush’s illustrious history.

There you have it. It was such a great time listening to all this music. Rush is a great contender for my favorite band. Great lyrics, great instrumentals, great imagery almost every time.

@FoxRox great to see those RUSH listings. My first RUSH album was FTK, bought (summer of '77) blind as it were. Didn't know who RUSH were and had never heard anything from them. Just thought the cover was awesome and I like the list of instruments the RUSHmen played. Probably my favourite of theirs, also have (in order bought) Hemispheres, Different Stages (present from nephew), Clockwork Angels, 2112 special edition and Moving Pictures. Looks like Permanent Waves should be joining my collection sometime soon.

For someone who has never responded to any form of Country music outside of Michael Nesmith's trail blazing early post-Monkees stuff, well I've sort of fallen in love with Lindi Ortega's amazing voice and cute songs.
