Bond Movie Characters You Wanted To Return

edited June 2013 in Bond Movies Posts: 5,745
It's been 23 official films up to this point in Bond's filmography full of fun, vibrant, and fantastic characters. Some have become main-stays of the majority of films, like Q and Moneypenny. Unfortunately, though, there were those few that were left with the few scenes they had.

No character is out of the question, even if they did return in multiple releases (i.e. Sheriff Pepper, Gen. Gogol, etc.).

For me, one recent addition to the Bond family I would love to see return in some way would be Dr. Hall, from Skyfall. His word association scene was humorous, and there could definitely be reasoning for his return in future features. It'd be an easy joke to make of Bond's reaction to walking into a room for a check up and having Dr. Hall greet him in Bond 24.

Mr. White or indeed Dr. Hall could be used at a number of points further down the line.

    Good one, @Sam.

I have confessed my love and admiration for the return of Mr. White's creepy character plenty of times through these threads.

Unfortunately I can't see Silva rising from the dead any time soon. And the thought of a re-invented Sheriff Pepper in a Craig film makes me gag.

I want Mr. White back, and its too bad Mathis got killed off.

Milos Columbo, though Topol would be about 80, still I liked his character.

New timeline, new 'interpretation' of the character ;)

Fleming had no problem bringing characters back in the books and the movies should do the same. Both Strangeways and Quarrell were in the novel LALD and both ended up dying in DN (novel and movie).

I want to see Mr. White return and get his just desserts in Bond 24
Agent Fields, too bad she had to die in QoS

From earlier films maybe Solitaire shows up with a child in tow....

Most certainly Mathis. Cannot believe they decided to kill him off.

    Who's Dr. Hall again?

They were apparently going to have Anya Amasova come back in the place of Paola Ivanova, but they couldn't get Barbara Bach because of scheduling conflicts or something. Paola was by no means bad, though.

They were also considering having Natalya in the place of Paris Carver, which would have made her death more meaningful because she was already seen in a Bond movie and Izabella Scorupco was leagues better than Teri Hatcher. They also didn't resolve what became of their romance, which is unusual for the more meaningful romances in the series (i.e. Tracy, Natalya, Elektra, Vesper). I suppose it's all for the best, as a killed-off Natalya would make me a sad man.

This is also probably a terrible idea, but I thought it would be interesting having a minor henchman or other character (like, say, Miss Taro) show up twenty years down the line to see what would happen.

@Soundofthesinners, he was the one who did the word test with Bond in SF.

I had no idea about the whole Natalya thing. I'm happy they didn't, though; I would have loathed seeing her die.

I say if the entirety of Tomorrow Never Dies had been better, I'd be okay with Natalya dying in place of Paris.

Just imagine the already perfect scene with Dr. Kaufman in the hotel being previewed with the death of Natalya. Would have had 10x the impact of that scene.

I agree @JWESTBROOK. Instead of a character that we are "told" had a previous relationship with Bond it would have been someone that we actually knew and cared about.

We, the audience, didn't want to see Paris die but she was gone before we really got the chance to know her. Imagine how powerful that scene would have been if we were as emotionally attached to her as Bond supposedly was.

This would be hard to fix into a story, but I really liked Kinkade and would love to see him talking with Bond again.

I would be happy if Olga as Camillie returned. But its not likely, however considering that both Bach and Scorupco were supposedly considered, which was news to me until I perused this thread, maybe it could happen.

Camille could be a returning accomplice, pretty much like Wai Lin in the early drafts of Die Another Day.

I wouldn't consider the return of Mr White though. We already had Skyfall. It's time for DC's Bond to let go. Otherwise he should be grieving for Vesper all over again, and we would be reintroduced to QoS' Emo Bond.

Other character's I would like to return are Felix Leiter (of course), Sharky, Jaws, Tiger Tanaka, and if possible, Kissy Suzuki (considering that YOLT is one of my favorite novels, I hope there comes a re hash set in Japan involving Tanak and Kissy, and the original ending of the novel would be retained)

    Emo Bond? Oh please...

In QoS Bond isn't cutting himself or wearing all black clothing, spiked bracelets or eye-liner with a prominently pointy mohawk and a dozen piercings in somewhat uncomfortable places. He is simply going through the stages of a man lost in his feelings over a woman he was ready to give away everything for and quite literally float far off into the sunset with. We instantly observe the moment Bond knows that Vesper has betrayed him when talking with the Swiss banker, and his anger is obvious, fuming even. The climax hits, and when Vesper locks herself in the elevator and the lift sinks into the deep water, Bond is in love with her again, doing all he can to save her. As he pulls her to the top of the sunken structure, her body lifeless in his hands, he tries desperately to bring her back amongst the living, knowing all attempts to be futile, but still keeps on going hoping for a miracle. As the film ends he is moved back in the angry frame of mind, playing up to M that Vesper meant nothing to him by saying, "the bitch is dead." We constantly see Bond shift in his views of Vesper, fully exemplifying a man unsure of what to feel after a great loss of love in his life. Does he love her, or hate her? These inner conflictions are compelling and are constantly at battle inside of Bond as CR ends and QoS continues in the wake of Vesper's death. As we can see near the start of QoS in MI6's headquarters in Siena as Bond quickly swipes Vesper's photo away while M isn't looking right after proclaiming she isn't important to him (and that neither is Yusef), we know he still deeply cares about her no matter how much he tries to put on a pokerface for everyone. As the film goes on he experiences every stage of a man experiencing grief over loss: denial (extremely prominent), depression (his drinking on the plane and overall brooding), anger (again, lots of it), and more, eventually coming to acceptance when he realizes all she did to save him as he tosses her necklace in the snow and moves on.

That isn't Emo Bond. Emo Bond would be a whiny little punk telling everone around him how dark the nihilistic abyss of existence is and how pointless it is to try to thrive in the tormented hell of a shell life has become all before locking himself in his room for the night to cry himself to sleep. Here we have something else entirely. We have a Bond who-while still vulnerable and emotional-doesn't let his personal woes stop him while in the line of duty. He still gets Greene and cramps down on some of Quantum. He still remains focused to stop Medrano and even spares Yusef after learning the important lesson that vengeance is a futile exercise for man to practice. And most importantly, he never once jeopardizes the mission for his own personal revenge, because he realizes it will never bring back those he has lost and only bloodens his hands more.

Anway, rant over; QoS is awesome (just saying, the film is soaked in amazing content and themes).

    Back on topic:

I definitely want Wright back. He has the potential to be the best Felix, if they only use him properly and with purpose, which there is tons of.

Having Mr. White back is also a bit of a must for me. I hope that we do get more Quantum in the next film/s, because I desperately want this arc wrapped up so it doesn't look sloppy in the continuity of the Craig era when we look back. White, Haines and Quantum in addition to their other mysterious agents leave so many possibilities to be played with, and I hope we get to see more. One only hopes Logan has the same aspirations.

Me too, I love Wright's Felix. I REALLY hope he is back in Bond 24.

I love his stoic cool attitude. I always smile when he says "My friend, bring me one as well, keep the fruit." in Casino Royale.

I'm still pissed off that they killed of Mathis. He really deserved to be a recurring character and I liked him better than any of the Felix's so far.

I can't really think of any characters in the current era apart from him that I'd be bothered about returning (apart from the obvious like Q, MP, etc).

I think there are a fair few who should have returned though. Sylvia Trench could've popped up a few more times in the Connery era and if the actress hadn't died, Irma Bunt should've returned in DAF.

Although 2 appearances is enough and I liked his death, I wouldn't have minded if Zukofsky survived TWINE and turned up in DAD. I love the character. He could've replaced that other bloke Bond meets up with in Cuba.

    That is so emo.

And not My Chemical Romance-emo, mind you, by emotional I mean he didn't really let go of Vesper because of his multiple conflicting emotions, such as denial and anger, as you have mentioned, to the length that EON devoted the 22nd entry of the franchise to Bond's search for the truth and to come to terms with Vesper's final act. Greene's scheme was just a small side note of the entire Vesper angle that Bond just passed through it with some gunsfire and explosion for some kind of enlightenment and redemption and in the end... it was still about Vesper.

I'm not saying QoS is a bad film. I like it very much in fact. But compared to a masterpiece like it's predecessor it fared as much as a bonus DVD material. In fact I liked it better if they just ended up with Casino Royale's ending: he discarded the "bitch" and moved on to continue with his badassery. I don't know, but as a Fleming purist, that is very unlike Fleming and would be better off if Bond did the same for Tracy.

The choice to kill Mathis is one of my least favorite things I have seen in the films; he is such a great character and was really wasted.

I think I would want Zukofsky to stay dead, however. He goes out pretty badass in TWINE, in a tense scene where he looks like he is actually going to kill Bond with his final bullet, but instead makes one last act of loyalty. He is a cool character, but I think bringing him back for DAD still wouldn't have saved the film from being a trainwreck after Jinx shows up, and we would have lost that great death scene in TWINE because of it. Not worth it, in my opinion.

    I would have liked back:

    Mathis
    Colombo
    Kerim
Telly's Blofeld (in a better demise than what happened in the films)
Valentin (he had a good ending, but I enjoyed him so I would want him in one more film)
    Fields (I liked her)
Wai Lin (a definitely great agent who could cooperate with Bond again)

    and now, maybe:

    Corrine
Tanner for sure (I hope he is not gone forever; but probably less screen time)
Mr. White (to get his final comeuppance)
And of course, Felix (with J. Wright!) - I hope he is in Bond 24
Come to think of it, we could still have Wai Lin (Yeoh is still awesome!)

I see no reason why Tanner wouldn't appear; he is still in the same position, just with a new M as boss. I do wish we got to see his reaction to M's death, though.

If Kinnear is as good an actor as everyone says then I'd like it if they wrote the Tanner character better. Doesn't need loads of screentime, I just want him to have more of a personality and friendship with Bond.

Kinnear is the favourite to become the new Doctor Who so he must have some charisma.

Well two films in and I've yet to see it. He's just the bloke who googles stuff for M.

Michael Kitchen and Colin Salmon blow him out of the water in the same role.

Yes, well, he's just a "backroom boy" it seems. Is he meant to be Bill Tanner or is he called Villiers? I've not seen these newer films enough to be certain on this, so pray excuse my ignorance!

Well he's called Bill Tanner in name only. Can't see the Tanner of the books mincing under the desk when Silva walks in (check out Calvindysons SF review for Tanners moment of shame).

I've only yet seen Skyfall once due to having a temporary TV, but as I've replaced that now, I'll get a chance to see the film again, so apologies for being so rusty on this. I know you expect rather more of me, Mr Ice!
