That's the thing, you CAN technically do more with CGI, but it almost always takes me out of the experience. Give me models, stop-motion, and animatronics any day of the week. Some of my favorite films utilize those.
What makes it more special is knowing that whether they're models, puppets or stop motion, they exist physically- while their CGI counterparts leave people feeling cheated. I mean, its all illusion at the end of the day, but with CGI, you know it doesn't exist outside of the computer.

    @WillyGalore, why thank you.

@QBranch, exactly. Knowing that it's something you could physically touch and feel and see in person makes it that much more exciting. I like knowing that it's something real. Hell, the whole eye removal scene in T1 is so fantastic, and even though you can tell it's not really it's head, you can't accomplish that with CGI, either. It's physical, it's something that's really getting cut and diced, and that's what I love.

That's why I'm a fan of 'CGI Enhanced'

Walking Dead does it all the time on the zombies; for example, it's an actor in makeup, but they digitally enhance it to show, say.... a hole through the head or missing limbs. Stuff makeup alone can't do.

Even T3 did it with some success

I can't see that last pic, @Master. Walking Dead struck a good balance, I think, in regards to the effects. I thought the CGI of Arnie in Salvation was pretty impressive. IIRC, that was Arnie's face on a real bodybuilder.

    Stupid internet. Try this

I remember seeing behind the scenes shots of Arnold; he had green patches on his face along with the real makeup

Interesting comparison: cigar, cuts, lighter hair. I can see it.

Over halfway through 'The Terminator' right now. Sci-fi rarely gets better than this, what a fantastic film. I'll be doing a back-to-back this evening with this and the second one, then I'm watching 'Blade Runner' after that. It's one huge sci-fi night for me.

I live in New Orleans. I am a Firefighter and have worked on the set of the upcoming Terminator movie. I've talked to the crew and have seen storyboards. Without giving any spoilers,If thy can pull off what is planned this could really be a fun film.

I'm not sure if it's been rumored, announced, talked about, etc., but I'll keep it in spoilers just in case. It's regarding casting:
I read that someone saw the leaked call sheet, and apparently Byung-hun Lee will be playing the T-1000 that goes against Arnold's Terminator and the rest of the gang.

Ew. Why not Matt Smith? Since
he looks just like the T1000

I'm not sure, and I wonder if:
Byung-hun Lee will also be a liquid metal type T-1000, as apparently he was spotted in a police officer's outfit in a mall scene.

Why not Robert Patrick as the T1000 again? I'd love to see him in another Terminator movie?

I'm not sure, @Agent007391. I thought he was fantastic in T2 when I watched it last night, but perhaps they just really want to spice up the casting (aside from Schwarzenegger) and bring all new people in.

I agree with @Creasy47. Also, Arnold is getting a bit long in the tooth but Patrick surely looks too old for that part. That said, I think nowadays they can CGI him nicely.

Exactly. Of all the criticism Salvation gets, I don't recall hearing anyone being unsatisfied with the CGI quality regarding the 1984 Arnie. They could do the same with Patrick if the story called for it.

@QBranch, when was Arnie CGI in 'The Terminator'?

Sorry, I meant his face was CGI'd onto a bodybuilder for Salvation (IIRC). It looked like 1984 Arnie, right down to the hair.

Ohh, my apologies, @QBranch. I thought you were defending 'Salvation' and criticizing the CGI in the original 'The Terminator,' which there is none. I understand what you're saying.

With all the discussion about CGI, I must say that the rear projection near the end of Terminator nowadays throws me off more than any effect in T3 ore T4, as tense and absolutely genius as the rest of the film is. The eye removal looks like a model, but it´s so creepy nonetheless it doesn´t matter if it´s real or not, because it looks kind of surreal in that moment, and that makes it so effective. The rear projection later on however merely reminds me of Ray Harrihausen, and that´s not creepy.

That's an interesting way of looking at it. And the scene is also effective through irony, as the animatronic head is closer to the making of a T-800 than if it were just an actor with make up or CGI.

Ever since someone pointed it out, it does irk me that you can see both eyes completely intact during the police HQ assault scene, but nevertheless, that eye removal scene is very, very, very well done. I do love how robotic and creepy it is.

Some of the stop-motion process shots in Terminator look fairly bad, but when you consider the entire budget was under 7 mill you just have to be massively impressed with what they got to the screen.

For anyone interested in cinematography, have a look at this two part assessment of The Terminator, from Cinevenger. I found it quite interesting, myself:
