Calvin Dyson Appreciation Thread

Apologies if this is in the wrong spot, I took all the different categories and figured this was the one that most suited the thread.

I searched for a thread about Calvin and was unable to find one, so I figured that I would open one.

Discuss everyone's favourite Bond fan here!

Calvin, in my opinion, is an integral part of this fandom, his reviews are great and he's a wonderful person. I sent him a message on facebook earlier today and he not only responded, but was very gracious and kind. I don't agree with many of his opinions but enjoy hearing/watching him express them nonetheless. I joined MI6C for the sake of having Bond discussions, and I gained that desire to have such discussions from watching Calvin's reviews.

I enjoy his reviews for sure but I wouldn't go as far as calling him an integral part of Bond fandom. ;-)

Does anyone have the audacity to call themselves "an integral part of Bond fandom"? C'mon, let's see those egos ;-)

He does make a rather fine vacuum cleaner :P

I'm sure that, given time, Dimi will come up with reasons why he should have already earned all the accolades Calvin has :))

We agreed never to bring "that" particular thing up again, @SirHenryLeeChaChing. ;-)

    Calvins videos are tremendous fun.

I often find myself disagreeing with him but anyone who comes out and says TB bores him to buggery and back is fine in my book.

Yes, that seems to be the consensus on TB. I've always liked it, myself!

Me too :( but I can see where he's coming from. It's got quite a few relitively forgettable, bland characters who come and go quickly.

Yes, Steven Jay Rubin complained in his books that the girls all look pretty much the same with their hair up!

Count me in on this sycophantic Calvin-love fest. I thoroughly enjoy his videos, including his wonderful Hitchcock film reviews and other non-Bond related videos he posts on his YouTube channel. His passion and care for the character of James Bond and the films themselves is more than apparent in every single video, and he analyzes the films with a great mix of wit, class and fun. I always anticipate his next video, and he explores so much of Bond across various mediums, so you never know what he is going to upload next.

And he is even a member on this very forum, so if you are out there Calvin, I hold a deep reverence for you and all that you contribute to the discussion of James Bond in his many forms. Keep up the great work, mate! :)

    I just found this.
Wait, it's only five days old. I said that as if I found something from 2006.
Anyway, I love this man. Enough said.

Nice to see this thread. I'm a follower of Calvin's reviews for a long, long time. Although I don't agree with everything he says I enjoy his videos thoroughly.

I will have to check Calvin's reviews out on You Tube when I get a chance. It seems that he has become something of a "name" in the James Bond online community of which we all form a part.

He did commit a big sin though recently. In his "re-review" of FRWL he suggested the train scene between Bond and Grant was long winded and tedious.

    That won't do! [-(

He not always understand the meaning of things in QOS. I like the way he quistion those, but i not realy get idea he understand Eon know what there doing. Moost present example be his maintitle video he ''complane'' about sand. But the comment about Kleinman and Skyfall maintitle whas very funny and so true. The kind of humor some people on those forums wil understand, in special people who hate or love Twine, Judi Dench and Pervis and Wade.

Moost of time we agree about Goldeneye and Twine, whyle don't understand why Twine maintitle is not part of his Top 10. Also i wish he not remove his earlier video's about the movies if he made update version of it.

I only think Hazzardstuf beat him, iam very curious to that guy his opnion about QOS and Skyfall. I recomment his video's Casino Royale, include the CR set up video where he also tells what go wrong after DAD before CR.

I think that he is member of the forums. I like his reviews, he is certainly the most famous Bond reviewer on Youtube.
  • He's come up with a real style, sort of Derek Nimmo meets Justin Beiber! Perhaps he overdoes the shrill -let's-slow-down-and-stagger-my-words deliberation thing, he shouldn't turn into a stereotype.
  • I love the way he does his reviews, I've watched them all and thoroughly am excited when he puts up new content, I've not seen another who does it better than him ;)

He's an entertaining enough chap, although his pronunciation of Mallory as Mer-lory and Tanner as Tainer is quite grating.

I really enjoy watching his reviews! So glad he has been mentioned! His DAF is my favourite, especially when he includes Charles Gray from the rocky horror picture show! "Its just a jump to the left"

    That was hillarious!

I think it's time to call the man himself, @calvindyson are you around?

I've been messaging him back and forth on facebook. Unfortunately he doesn't get around to MI6 very often. I've been encouraging him to check it out again, though!

Not a fan I am afraid. Rather hysterical and another one who worships at the altar of GE.

    overratted, much like GE.

That's what makes him entertaining! He's a very down-to-earth person from what I can tell out of his non-review videos and from talking to him on facebook. He adopts a different personality, a character, for his reviews, and he does a great job with it. He's a great guy and I personally adore his reviews. GE has a right to be worshipped despite it being a Brosnan film. The stars really aligned for it and I can't stand when people go right up against GE without any sort of argument as to why. Besides, I don't see how loving GoldenEye reduces a reviewer's merit. Surely there must be something else about Calvin you don't favour?

Goldeneye in 1995 seemed to be what Skyfall was in 2012. A 'crowd-pleaser' Bond film and more excessible than what came before it. Both even have a very vocal group of Bond fans who consider them overrated.

Calvin seems like a decent chap and its his "hysteria" that makes his reviews entertaining - even if he seems to borrow a bit from TheGuyWithTheGlasses.

Ahh, but TGWTG is just so influential, everyone who's come after seems like they've borrowed something from him. Now HE'S definitely a man who's left a genuine impact on the internet. Calvin obviously isn't at that level of internet superstardom, though it does seem that his view count increases with each video.

While I do appreciate his knowledge of the series and some of the insights he has shared I think he may go a little overboard with this persona of his from time to time. I understand that no one wants to watch a video of some boring guy talking about movies but I think I would enjoy him more if he was more of the down to earth person you speak of. To each their own though. I don't want to rain on anyone's parade. It's just not my cup of tea.

I think Calvin is more sophisticated. ;)
