He didn't lose the genius, he gained a commercialism. When ESB didn't do as well as STAR WARS, he panicked and that's why the series took the course that it did, starting with family-friendly Ewoks in RotJ.
I hadn't heard that theory before.
Haven't rewatched ROTJ for about 20 years! I'm pretty sure it's still better than the prequels though.
Don't get me wrong It's miles better than the prequels but R1 for me is definitely a stronger film, if TLJ isn't better I will be disappointed.
I accept TFA had to go there but if TLJ doesn't move into territories new and really blow me away then I will walk out the theatre deflated, I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment but I have faith Rian Johnson is going to give us the best SW film since ESB and by that it isn't a clone of that film.

I think there is going to be some similarities to ESB that are going to be unavoidable. Like Rey's training from Luke (Luke's training from Yoda), we're supposed to find out who Rey's parents are (finding out Vader is Luke's father), and it's supposed to be the darkest of the sequel trilogy (like ESB to the OT). There may be more but we won't find out until the release of The Last Jedi. I just hope there's not so much that I have to listen to continuous complaints from "fans."
I think as you say the similarities are unavoidable but TFA was at times a blue print, TLJ needs to avoid that, I think Johnson knows he's got to make something different.
He replied to a tweet very recently to some fans rather sarcastically that course he'd been remaking ESB for the last 3 years.
JJ got the job because he successfully relaunched Star Trek to a new audience and did that by using moments from the series and fashioning it into a new story which we got with TFA but once they've got the audience back I think Kennedy & Lucas Film know they can't pull the same trick again going forward, I think I hope that TJA is something very special indeed, it needs to be.
More Kenobi rumours. I would be fine with that.
Not classics but I've never been a huge Star Wars fan to start with - in fact I find the originals pretty dull. The prequels just seem like total drek - haven't been able to bring myself to watch any of them all the way through.
That would make for an interesting film, especially after finding out Luke is his son.
Honestly though, I'd rather have a Vader film that takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. We could actually have lightsaber fights with Vader hunting down the remaining Jedi.
Lmao

That actually would be pretty hilarious if a whole Star Wars trilogy is released in between two of Craig's Bond films.
Reporter: "So, what's with the longer spans between Bond films these days?"
Barbara: "Well you know, Daniel wants to pursue other opportunities and we support him in that."
Lol.
I bet these were a flying machine in the shops.
