But yeah, entertaining, if pretty disposable, stuff
Yeah I guess, but being free of Lucas' direction didn't improve him as much as I thought it might. I'm not really convinced he's all that great to be honest: this didn't feel like a movie star performance to me.
I've never been a fan of his. I always thought he was extremely serviceable. He's never wowed me in anything, even in the more acclaimed films he's been in.
But I really liked his work here.
Definitely! The religious worshipping of the original trilogy is quite strange. They are quite flawed entertainment blockbusters. I like them and enjoy them alot, but all three films have weaknesses and by no means masterpieces.
It is not the quality of the films that made Star Wars a pfenomenon, it is the ethos.
I can enjoy all the films, even the more flawed ones. There is no unwatchable SW movie. There are people who should not being making them though. I’m sure we’ll see episodes 10-12 sometime in the future at some point.
Controversial opinion: I’m looking forward to Taika Waititi’s, Rogue Squadron, and even Rian Johnson’s possible trilogy. Give some fresh characters and stories, the universe is truly expandable!
And I’m okay with that. George Lucas referred to his saga as a soap opera, so it seems fitting that we’d continue to see the saga play our generation to generation. When LucasFilm started calling TROS the final installment of the saga rather than just the trilogy, I KNEW that was bunk.
My guess is that for the next trilogy they’ll actually go to George Lucas’ unused ideas, maybe even bring him on board as a creative consultant. The narrative will be about Lucas having more stories to tell in the Star Wars canvas as a way to get goodwill from fans who revere Lucas’ vision.
It's what they should have done with 7-9 I think. Lucas is not a great film maker, but his ideas are interesting and he obviously understands the essence of the Star Wars universe better than anyone.
But whatever they do they have to expand the story! You can’t keep telling about the same old families and just magically bring back the Empire as the adversary every time.
That’s why the EPISODE 7 that we get feels off. The movie literally starts with the new heroes searching for Luke. But then midway through the movie that story gets put on hold for all the Starkiller base stuff. Ideally, that should have been cut out entirely as it’s just a retread of ANH, and instead Rey finds Luke in the middle of EPISODE 7.
It sort of plays to Lucas’ symmetry. In ANH, the old Jedi master Obi-Wan is trying to recruit Luke onto an adventure, and then in the sequel trilogy it’s a young girl trying to bring back Luke on the adventure.
I didn't know that. What's the source? I thought Lucas' ideas fir the latest trilogy had been duscarded and never made official.

Lucas would later reveal other ideas he had that were ultimately not used in the sequels, such as exploring a “microbiotic world” expanding on the medichlorians.

My guess is that if 10-12 happens, we’ll probably see the idea of a microbiotic world explored.
Yeah I still believe that the best films George Lucas ever made are the Indiana Jones movies. They're just on a higher level of craft to me, and it'd be hard not to lay a lot of that at Mr Spielberg's feet.
I was out with some friends the other night and we were chatting about Obi Wan and SW in general, and none of us are huge fans, and when it came up in conversation we all agreed that Force Awakens is a better film than Star Wars. Not more original, not more iconic- but it's just a better made, written, directed, acted movie and functions better as a film on its own merits. If folks took nostalgia out of the frame I think a lot more would agree.
Interesting! I must admit I have no idea where he's going with that..!
Editing to add one gripe : was not a fan of the generic sounding OST. I really liked the composer for Mando and Boba Fett, but Natalie Holt (who did Loki score) was not very good !
Oh she was the Loki composer? That does surprise me as I thought the Loki score was really good- this was pretty average, as you say.
Makes sense. I found her music very "low-key"... ;)
(I'll see myself out... :P)
Make that about 9 years and decreasing if we get a season 2.

Millie Bobby Brown Rumored For A Big Star Wars Role, But Let's All Agree On One Major Point

Leia?
There’s A LOT of things in that original film that got contradicted/retconned as soon as the second film was made. It’s practically a meme at this point:
If Kennedy actually decides to backtrack on the “we don’t recast legacy characters”, Brown would make a very good Leia.
Something I think we all knew but it has now been confirmed.
Attack Of The Clones 6/10
Revenge Of The Sith 8/10
The force Awakens 5/10
Rogue One 9/10
Last Jedi 3/10
Solo 8/10
Rise Of Skywalker 2.5/10
Mandalorian 9/10
Book Of Boba Fett 6.5/10
Obi-Wan Kenobi 8.5/10
Sounds about right, glad to see another Solo fan. I'd be a touch more generous to The Force Awakens, largely because of the beginning all the way up to the Falcon leaving Jakku. From there it really drops off IMO.
I think Andor may end up being the best Disney Stars Wars content yet, the scope of the show appeals to me.
Possibly!
Haven't seen the shows, but as far as the movies go very solid ranking.
Yes! Millie would be great as Leia. She's an incredibly gifted actress. I can definitely see her in that role.
Critical drinker pretty much sums up feelings on the matter..
I liked it just as much the second time, although the final episode stuck out a lot more as the weakest (aside from the Kenobi/Vader duel). Reva's arc really should have been finished by episode 5. Her scenes in the last episode were superfluous.
Moses Ingram did a good job with the scenes she was given. There was an obvious arrogance to her but it was clear she was hiding something throughout. I don't really understand why people are slating the performance.
It only dawned on me that the actor playing the Grand Inquisitor was none other than Rupert Friend, which was amusing. He was having a lot of fun hamming up that voice.
