The snake imagery is something that's part of the film that really freaked me out in younger days so I wanted to reference it somewhere to add drama to the poster though this shot is a blurred screen grab which does make it look 3D! I aim to get a sharper version to use

I realise I've missed a trick there on the 'DEATH' card: I'll need to change the numerals on it to 007! A bit cheesy maybe but still, a lot more meaningful!

That make up around Jayne Semour's eyes makes for a hypnotising look though the dress helps! :)

    Variation on a theme:

I cheated here with the next poster - RM is still in remarkably good shape - something that's been the topic of discussion ever since the film aired - in fact, he's from the LALD poster! I've had a real task finding a decent shot in the right arrangement. Maybe no such thing exists as it would've been embarrassing for all involved? lol

  • AVTAK wouldn't have been quite as embarrassing with a 12-years-younger Bond. And I noticed on the last LALD poster, Moore is halfway popping out of his card. Was that intentional?

Yes - bit of movement aiming to give it more of transient feeling playing on the ritualistic vibes/themes in the film. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

They're actually from Octopussy, taken with the Berlin Wall as a backdrop. Great photos all the same with Moore not looking too bad.

True but both the SE and UE artwork of AVTAK use the first picture of Moore I posted. ;)

The problem with searching for images online is the reliability of the sources and in some cases it's difficult unless of course there's an obvious unique event or actors together. I've screen grabbed the odd frame from a film or two (purely for artistic personal artwork I may add...)

It's better that they did. If they used a pic of how Roger looked in AVTAK it probably wouldn't sell well if at all. No offence.

Here's a cover from Argentina where they used a pic of Roger from LALD!

    And a Belgian one.

Sorry for derailing a bit. Not my intention. Carry on. :)

Not LALD, the images are from The Spy Who Loved Me.

An improvement I feel over my first TSWLM using most of the similar elements, another variation on a theme I guess:

    TheSpyWhoLovedMeposter2-1.jpg
  • Another good one. I like how the Union Jack parachute blends in with Atlantis and Bond and XXX blend with each other. The Lotus is sort of stuck in there, but then, it's the underwater car. You can't just not have it.

In the past, I've been coached in how to consider the way a viewer's eye is lead around communication layouts like the poster above so there is a lot of theory being put into practice here! I'm not pretending I'm getting it right mind!

Instinctively with anything we look at, we look at people - it's a kind of nosy / self preservation instinct. We will always scan the eyes and then the face first above anything else. Something like friend or foe and threat or even a potential mate! The primary here is RM then BB. The eye scans and follows shapes and lines to make sense / summarising it so the gun runs to the top right and the wedge of the Esprit is then drawing back into the centre to the film title and maybe the smaller script though more likely the tanker interior. I've tipped the Esprit more of a steeper angle as it was originally quite level. An overall scan then sees Atlantis and the parachute with possibly the top intro last - ironic as it's an intro but it's a kind or repetition 'prop' to give continuation cues to familiar elements like the footer 007 too.

The general bubble of blue is the underwater section beneath Bond and Atantis and is centred in the (maybe too) subtle gun barrel as an additional focus in the general swirl in the currents. The fact it's hanging there floating is the idea!! Words are another draw to the eye and help this scanning process.

There! And it all just seems like I'm only trying to make it look nice!
Which I am. And I'm winging it... ;)

Have to admit I'm disappointed by the lack of any Claudine Auger in your Thunderball poster.

  • edited August 2013 Posts: 1,068
No need to be disappointed, I've done many versions. I'm still deliberating what balance of 'cleaner' more limited use of elements versus a 'busier' lively version that covers more of the story elements.

These are a couple of alternatives I didn't post before:

    Thunderball6.jpg[/URL]

    Thunderball4.jpg

    Thunderball3-1.jpg

Even with new films it's quite noticeable how the publicity machine uses a multitude of different poster images and themes for their new release and it's likely they too can't decide which version they actually prefer!
